Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

You need a BEC, standard 10 amp for $20. Yes a Castle link is also a good idea to have on hand.

'Nuff said. Thank you for the reply

EDIT: after some more searching this evening it seems what i'm experiencing is called amping out? now just to wait on the bec to get here.. should've made a fun side project and built my own.

thanks for the information.

I think you would be plenty happy with the change from a 55t to a 35t. The 16t Crawlmaster would be about the same speeds at the 35 but just a little smoother and more expensive. 18/87 gearing would still be nice and safe for a 35t, I think you are on the right track. "thumbsup"

I am not familiar with your ESC, but have only good things to say about the BR-XL. So I can't say for sure what your best option is there.

Send John at Holmes Hobbies and email and ask about getting his product over there, I can't say I know the answer.

Hallo Harley!

I am thinking about making myself a present and get 2 combos.... By HH

I will think about it a little bit, as the 2 motors I mentioned below have similar speed I maybe opt for the following (combos):
- BRXL + TorqueMaster Pro 35T
- BRXL + Crawlmaster 13T (instead of the below mentioned 16T)

I think I can cover a wide range of applications....presently I only have a Wraith but planning to build a TrailFinder2 rig....

What differences should I expect between the Crawlmaster 13T vs. 16T?

Thanks a lot again!

PS always running on 3S

16t Crawlmaster is comparable to a 35t Torquemaster, just smoother on the bottom end power range.

Similarly, a 13t Crawlmaster is comparable to roughly a 27t Torquemaster, etc.

Many Thanks Harley!

at the end, I was focused on the Torquemaster PRO 540, 35T (which should be approx 1565 rpm/volt) for the Wraith, does this motor has a sensitive difference in torque compared to the 16t Crawlmaster?
I mean as I prefer Crawling but still need some speed for up hill and wheeling, do you think this is the right choice for me?

I understand the 16t Crawlmaster has similar speed
(I think it is approx 1850 Kv) but with smoother low end speed control... compared to the 35T Torquemaster, why is this not better for crawling as it is smoother? is it just a metter of torque needed for crawling which is in favor of the Torquemaster?

sorry for the many questions...I promise this is the last one.....

Thanks a lot

A 35t will have a enough speed on 3s to most likely make you happy.

The Crawlmaster can be used or crawling, it is just a little less torquey.

Sorry for this stupid question harley:oops:

I just read that if i want to play in the water and mud the safest way is to go brushed
Well, i am planning to go mudding and water
But all i have is 2 brushless motor(trinity 13.5 and tekin 17.5)
Is it really bad to use brushless for mud and water?
Or perhaps there is a way to keep these brushless safe?

Thanks in advance "thumbsup"

You can use a brushless you just need to make sure its waterproofed, i have seen alot of guys using corrosionX with great success, do some searching around & u will see what I am talking about

I have 1 Wraith that is set up to crawl.
I just got another 1 but I want it to be a little different.
VXL combo
or
BRXL wp and a 7t Puller

Which should I go with?
Thanks

From what I have read they get mixed reviews some people hate them cause they are not so great for crawling or slow speed, you get cogging because its a 2 pole(I believe) but I also have seen people that swear by them & use the training mode for slow speed & crawling.. So I really think its personal preference but if you are gonna drop the money on a VXL u might as well spend a little more money & get a MMP or Tekin & a Pro4, Castle or Redline motor

I wouldn't mind buying a tekin but I already have these combos.
4 pole cogging? u might just be right about that. I have a 3800, 4600 and a 5700. Maybe I should try 1 of them.

I believe the cogging issue is a sensored vs non-sensored issue - not a 2 pole vs 4 pole issue.
For low speed control you want sensored.

Na, its all 4 pole something about they have to work twice as fast in the phasing and the older mamba max pros programming cant handle it. Castle has a grasp on it and some of the later built Mamba max pro's have been corrected hence some guys have no problems and others cant make it work. Just had a bad weekend with all this and it came down to the esc, even flashed it with the newer firmware and unplugged the red wire leading to the rec, still a no go.

OK, Harley, et al…
Here’s what’s happenin. I’m going to be building a Wraith kit – I have some time to acquire the necessary upgrade parts because I’m not gettin’ it ‘til Christmas =(

My vision for this Wraith is that it will be a trail runner/ kinda basher. This will involve some water, some mud, some jumps. The summer months tend to be dry. There are some rocks to negotiate, but I will not be doing any crawling per se.

So far I have the usual VP suspects – chubs, knux, lockouts, links – you get the pix

I also have a set of VP SLW V3’s and MT Baja Claw’s – not really an all-around weather tire but more for the dry summer months… For the rest of the year I’m considering the Pitbull Rock Beast, Mud Slingers or TSL’s (decisions, decisions… ) + tasty wheels =)

I will be adding Dan’s beef tubes to the axles and upgrading the driveshafts (see C.H.U.D.’s cheap but efficient shaft upgrade!)

For my servo it’s either going to be a HiTec 7950 or Savox 1270 - I’ll have to get a BEC for certain

Now to my choice in motor/ESC and gearing…
I’ve pretty much read all of this thread – yet I’m still undecided. I’ve sent out an email but the response I got back was the exact opposite of Post # 2. My first choice was to tear apart my traxxas rustler and use the VXL/ESC from that lil beast to drive this. But as I stated, I will be encountering some rocks and some of the trails are VERY steep. So a drag brake is very necessary. So scratch the VXL.

Any and all suggestions are very much appreciated!

Cheers,
Todd

Thanks Harley!
So I'm going to go with the MambaMax Pro ESC. My engine choices, Tekin brushless, but which one? Given the type of terrain etc... Then do I stick with the stock 20P and spur or should I up the ante on the gears?

Thanks again!
Todd
