Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

ok i understand that but doesnt the gear ratio will be almost the same???
robinson spur gear 56 tooth pinion 20t final ratio = 2.8

the one i am using now 80t 48pitch 28tooth pinion final ratio 2.8571...
the best that robinson or supershafty is the strenght of the spur gear and the pinion but wouldn i need a lower drive ratio to get more speed?
i maybe wrong but with that set up i will beef up the spur gear and pinion but the top end speed would be almost the same or am i wrong?
tanks for the reply HARLEY
I LOVE YOUR THREADS AND COMMENTS AND I REALLY RELLY ON THEM.
CHEERS

Yes the final ratio will be nearly the same. 2.8:1 is a very high gear ratio already but if the calculator is saying that it won't be fast enough then you may have to look into using a smaller plastic spur and larger pinion. That isn't something I can tell you though. I've never ran something like that so I can't even tell you what sizes will fit specifically.

Maybe take a look in the FOFF section and see what those guys are running. They would be a better resource then I am on extremely fast setups.

I'll refine this as time goes.

Choosing a Motor and ESC

The most common question asked in the Wraith section seems to be “What motor should I run”. I can see why people don’t know what motor to chose, it is a multi-level problem to solve. While those questions will never stop hopefully we can cut some of them down by adding this reference.

To make a long story short, for more detailed info read the following posts:

Good speed and OK crawling: Tekin 13.5 Redline (or Tekin Pro 4 3300) and Castle Mamba Max Pro – Faster than stock 20t motor and fairly smooth low end. Not a good choice for water or mud.

Good crawling and OK speed: Holmes Crawlmaster 13t and Holmes BRXL – OK for water and mud as long as you get the waterproof ESC and keep your motor maintained.

Best for crawling and low speed: Holmes 35t TorqueMaster Pro and Holmes BRXL – Smooth crawling with enough wheel speed to get up hills.

Hallo Harley!
I have been reading your 3D for a while and would like to ask for your suggestion...I want to get my Wraith a new motor

Presently I run a 55T brushed motor by Robitronic (I think it is approx 1100 Kv) with final ratio spur/pinion 87/14 (pretty short..), and ESC Speed star crawler also by Robitronic on 3S, basically I like crawling but I need more speed (I do not want a go fas car anyway)
My current set up is fine for crawling but I definitely need more sort of boost / wheeling and little bit more speed... sure I can gear up my ratio but I would like to try another motor

I was thinking a TourqueMaster Pro, maybe 35t, and gearing up to maybe 18/87..

Second option would be Crawlmaster 16t for more speed ...

What is your suggestion?
and do you rekon these motors perform better with BRXL ESC? (I was thinking about TourqueMaster BR-XL)

PS I live in Italy do you know whether I can get HH products in Europe?

I look forward to your kind reply

Many thanks

I think you would be plenty happy with the change from a 55t to a 35t. The 16t Crawlmaster would be about the same speeds at the 35 but just a little smoother and more expensive. 18/87 gearing would still be nice and safe for a 35t, I think you are on the right track. "thumbsup"

I am not familiar with your ESC, but have only good things to say about the BR-XL. So I can't say for sure what your best option is there.

Send John at Holmes Hobbies and email and ask about getting his product over there, I can't say I know the answer.

I'm sure it has been mentioned before but i dont have time to wade through 42 pages, so where is the best place to buy gears & such

Many thanks Harley,
actually I tried to send an email vie their website "contact us" bottom but can never successfully submit my request.... any idea on how to find a way around? any direct email address to send my request to?

thanks again for your precious info

Thanks, already sent an email but got the message they are all out for the Holmes Hobbies Nationals 2012..

so awaiting for his reply.... however I will try a "cheaper" 35T available in Italy and afeter John's reply I will decide how to proceed, I am looking at the combo... (incl. the BRXL...;)
"thumbsup"

okay...i have a question or two here seeing as im new to the crawling scene!
i am running the Traxxas 32p spur & RRP pinion 56/14 i believe and will be using the VXL3S ESC and am considering buying a Tekin RedLine 13T sensored motor for it. As it stands i have both diffs overgeared, so.... should i just go to the stock ratio on both diffs or would i want more wheel speed up front?

if i have this correct....im considering going to a 38/13 for the front axle and 43/13 for the rear axle, is this alright?

so far my drivetrain remains stock internals for now in the trans, and will be upgrading soon to RRP diff/idler, also have VP VVDs up front and for the center driveline for now is stock (glued plastic stalk from the tree's inside for strength) until VP releases the new ones hopefully soon. And on order (hopefully within the next week or so) my VP diff lockers should be here.

thoughts?

hallo harley
i'm a totally newbie in this writh thing
hell, even in RC world

just got fallen in love with wraith and ordered one already

so, i decided to use tekin RS ESC on it
and probably tekin redline 17.5T brushless motor
with a turnigy 11.1v 5000mah 3s lipo

how is that setting will be for "Good crawling and OK speed" criteria?

The 13.5 Tekin motor falls a little better into that category then the 17.5t does. The 17.5 isn't slow but isn't all that fast either.

17.5 has more wheel speed and isnt suited for crawling as it hasnt enough low-end Tq....

now, what about my gearing????

The 17.5 has plenty of torque and will work just find for crawling.

Sarcastic eye rolling emoticons isn't going to make me answer it any faster. I simply missed the post.

Going overdrive and underdrive is going to add a lot of bind to the drivetrain. With a 13.5 motor you are going to cause a lot of stress and likely destroy drivetrain parts.

If you plan on mixing gear ratios I only recommend the lower gear set in the rear axle and stock gear ratio in the front (HD gear set is fine).

It will do pretty good for crawling, but not completely for a dedicated crawler. Still a good choice for a Wraith though in my opinion.

You are a good tutor harley!
What is the difference to use it with tekin RS and tekin RS pro esc?

Oh one more thing,
What if i set my gear up to 87/20?
Maybe you have a better idea..

before i make a new thread.. i've been searching for a solution to my problem and can't find anythig amongst the millions of random threads and all the fragmented info. so thought i'd leave this here:

axial wraith rtr. only electronic modification is a 55t motor. running 7.4NiMH battery.

when i get into binds on a rock, the steering servo can't re-center itself.. and when this happens, the throttle becomes unresponsive beyond the caveman forward-reverse-forward-reverse on the remote which suddenly will cause things to roar to life with a short burst of full-throttle fwd or reverse (which can't be healthy on what's left of my plastic pieces.

however, if i lift the truck off of said cursed rock and jog the steering wheel on the remote back and forth a couple times the servo "catches up," centers, and then throttle and everything is back to normal.

ok, so what i'm thinking first is i may need an external bec? the castle unit commonly available for $20? but it seems i need to buy the castle-link programmer for $24? idk. and the cast website is amazingly vague. the faq is questions my mother would have, no real tech or instructions and the pdf "manual" is more simple than that which came with my ikea bed frame. i'd call them now but it's 9:30pm and i've got to do something proactive towards fixing this since getting tied up in rocks is what these trucks do, and this is completely debilitating. The thing that sits in my mind is in the beginner's guide it says "If you plan to run the stock ESC on 3 cell you will be required to run an external BEC, a Castle BEC is the hands down choice for this." now this is regarding crawling with lipos. i'm crawling, but not on lipos... but does this still apply and is ultimately my problem?

more exotic possible cause: maybe my batteries are old/reduced capacity/needing replacing? i notice when this happens the headlights dim as i'm hitting the gas. but i think my batteries are ok.. rated at 3aH and i've been getting run times going on an hour+

EDIT: what i've tried: re-bound the remote/rx, cried, cussed, typed this reply. it's probably a common problem, so common anyone with any experience will lol at my ignorance. hopefully someone has a solution before i spend 1:1 money on all new running gear.

You need a BEC, standard 10 amp for $20. Yes a Castle link is also a good idea to have on hand.
