cbp27's Defender 90 Build

I just picked one up...it is insanely bright!

I like the bigger tire idea. It's going to be tricky without getting rub or cutting up the fenders though. I love the nordic vehicles though! You could always get some bigger fenders.

Right now I'm thinking about a 4.3" tire size. The SDI's are close to 3.78" so it will be a big change. I've seen a lot of people using Axial's Dingo fender flares, which do resemble the Nordic flares minus the scale bolt mounts. But I really like SDI's rubber flares, so I may try them instead. I'll be keeping my Scale Doctors on a separate set of rims for scale runs and have the bigger set mostly for performance. Hopefully by the end of this week I can grab a set of tires to test out.

This is what I'm going for (far right)...

But this how it might end up...

Well, I got some Pit Bulls and tried to mount them to my Tango Downs with no luck. Those tires were a little too big anyway, so now I'm going to try something slightly smaller at 4.19 inches tall. Those should arrive later this week. And in preparation for those bigger tires I trimmed off the stock fender flares to fit the SDI rubber flares.

While I was filing the fenders I had masking tape protecting the surrounding paint, but when I removed the tape some paint came off. I guess I didn't prep the primer coat enough before color. And for some strange reason, I had the urge to cut off the back. That resulted in more paint coming off from masking tape. So it will be getting a new color coat soon. I'm not sure if I want to keep my roll cage, or make another custom one for the truck cab like at the bottom.

Woah. Drastic changes. I'm based to c1 rigs. but c2 rigs can look good too if you do it right.

Just traded my d90 truck body.....I put so many hours into fabbing those rear windows that I was sick of looking at by the time I got to making the bed.

My .02
If I had it to do all over....I would buy a 100 new body all day long. Seriously. It would have been so so so much less work without the sanding. So much....and cleaner all around. You now how those little pins are on the back to sand off.

Just warning you...

It is awesome looking when complete. Good luck. "thumbsup"

Hey I know you aren't using the scale doctors. Any more but I sprayed mine in wd40 today and let them sit in a zip lock bag for 6or do hours and now they're much more tacky and even flex easier. Softens them right up. They feel like rc4wd x3 compound now.

Well, technically this will still be a class 1 now that I have a different set of tires. I agree though. Would defitnitely take a scale looking rig any day.

I saw that in the sale section the other day. I was almost tempted to buy it lol I know the styrene work will be a challenge, but I think I can do it. I've sanded the paint off before so I'm used to that. Any tips on the curves? I know heating isn't the easiest method, but I want to try using the solvent cement to help soften the plastic. I'll probably just sandwich a bunch of strips and carve it out for the roof.

I thought about keeping them for an optional "scale" set, but at this point I'll probably just keep the bigger tires. I've heard of that trick and it sounds like a good idea for these tires. "thumbsup"

Hopefully I'll have some styrene building updates today...

looking good clay, as i said in my thread before, scoring worked for me to get the rear corner window curves done.

id be careful of the thickness of styrene you choose if you score it. I may be forced to diamond plate that section because im afraid if i start cutting i may destroy it. lots of reinforcement needed.

Already subscribed to your build. "thumbsup" I've been taking notes from all the Defender truck cab builds for reference.

Thanks Marc. I've seen the scoring method used on the other Defender truck cab builds so I'll definitely consider it.

Progress is slow, but I really want to take my time and make it look great. I have the basic bed layed out and just need to close the top of the fenders. The 90* styrene strips have really helped keep everything straight and in place while bonding. Diamond plating will fit between the white strips to clean up the bed.

I got these tiny HPI Cup Racer shocks back when I first got this Axial chassis so I could avoid cutting the interior for shock hoops. They're only a temporary solution for now. I have a nicer set of 3Racing shocks coming this week.

Looks good Clay, what size are the HPI shocks on there now?

A few weeks ago I started cutting out the corner windows from the old roof windows and it just didn't work out. Those long oval windows were wider at one end, so when I cut out the middle and joined them, they didn't line up so well. Since then I only made some "ribs" to help hold the curve on the corners. I wasn't in any rush.

Tonight however, I made a good amount of progress. I made the rain gutter "rib" to help provide a flat surface to build the curved roof from. Top and bottom "ribs" are in along with the center window piece. Also got all the diamond plate installed. Now for the hardest parts...curved windows and curved roof.

You can see the black styrene "ribs" at the very top and bottom of the back.
cbp27-42292-albums2810-39564.jpg

The white rain gutter "rib" is flat and will help with the roof line. You can see the body's roof wasn't molded properly and has a big dip.

Double Diamond!

Added a little cover plate for the rear of the gas cap pocket.

I've been thinking about doing this too...if anyone can guess. "thumbsup"

Thanks Wes.

It's been a slow build lately, but tonight I started the roof corners. I decided to try out some thick styrene strips (0.25"x0.75") instead of the thin 0.04" sheets. It made the process faster and less messy.

Rough shape after some filing.
