So after wanting a “crawler” for some time I decided to buy a TRX4. Went to my local hobby store and they convinced me to buy an RC4WD Merlin edition. I got home and realized the battery was still at the store. Too far to drive back, and holiday today so I have not driven it yet. After taking it out of the box it doesn’t seem all that capable... but what do I know. So did I screw up? Is this truck any good. I want to do the scale thing and my son has a Redcat gen 7 Pro coming for Christmas (from grandma). Just want to be able to keep up

Sainuu (What's up) from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia,

My first hobby grade RC was a Tamiya Falcon back in the late 80s, followed by a Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin. I loved building, breaking, fixing and running those as a kid, but then put down those stick remotes, and forgot about RCs for about 30 years.

I'm now about 5 months back into the RC truck hobby, and looking to have some fun getting my 7 y/o son into it. We started with a 2wd RTR brushed Slash and then I built a Tekno mt410 kit, which I think is an amazing beast of a basher. It is a lot of fun on grass, dirt, snow, ice and anything else I've run it on, but it needs lots of space to run safely. It is an 11lb. missile.

I really enjoyed building the Tekno kit, and I'd like my son to learn to build kits, so Santa will bring him an ECX Amp MT builder's kit for Christmas.

The research for his Amp kit led me to read about the ECX Barrage kit, and since I have been wondering if crawling might be fun, and I love the scale looks, I went ahead and ordered a kit that will sit under the Christmas tree next to the boy's Amp. You seem to get a lot for your $$ for that kit, and I figure the price is right as a trial into crawling, rather than going for $400 for an Axial kit, only to find out that I only like the speed and jumping of my Tekno.

While I'm waiting for Christmas and the chance to build and run the Barrage, I am thinking to get a micro crawler or two to play with inside when it's just too cold to go outside here. It gets down to -40 and colder here, and stays frozen from about November until April. So far, I like the soon-to-be-released 1/24 ECX Barrage best, but I'd have to wait until January to get one here. I also like the Redcat Sumo, Basher Rocksta and a $50 HSP 'Spirit' that I saw on Banggood.

If I like crawling as much as I think I will, I will look to get a higher-quality, more expensive kit, like an Axial or the Traxxas TRX-4 kit version that is coming out in 2018. I love the '79 Bronco body!

Thanks for reading my long-winded introduction. I really enjoy reading forums and learning about the RC hobby.

Peace,
MP

Hey, I don’t have much experience with the traxxas e-revo but from the time I’ve spent with a traxxas slash I would say if going fast and jumping is your sons goal he will not be disappointed.
The e-revo is a great platform but maybe a bit overkill for starting out. I would second the slash 4x4 its great all around.

First post telling about my rig, it's a used axial scx10 g6 falken. Came with beadlocks & 1.9 no name tires (deep lugs). It's also got no name aluminum lock outs, chubs, knuckles, horn,&steering! But the electronics are in stock locations. Looks to be used, pretty good but maybe not abused!
Followed my wife, on her walk, through a dirt foot path, in our state park, and was amazed! The leaves were freshly blown, which helped a lot but it was a great mile trail run! One thing I loved, was the relaxation that comes with a new "toy".
I've already upgraded to SSD ti lower links but have yet to run it, any hints would be appreciated! Also picked up a 5000 2 cell lipo, first trip was on a 2000 nimh. Looking to relocate the battery & move servo to chassis but need to look around for a nice cheap diy!
Anyway I'm Inurhead.

Hey all, I'm new here too. Decided to scratch build an Axial Wraith instead of buying a kit or an RTR and replacing everything with trick bits, just hoping to pick up info and ideas since this is my first crawler and my first R/C in 15 years, things sure have changed, gonna have to learn all new lingo.

man, can't believe I'm a newbie to RC again..lol

my name is Gray, I used to be into RC back in the 1990's-early 2000's, started with a Traxxas Hawk 2, then TRX-3 and raced those, then got into 4wd sedans with a tamiya TA02, then an Hpi RS4 Pro that I raced for a few years...ended up with a nice set-up then moved on to a 240sx and fixing that up so it all got sold..then came kids, marriage, motorcycles, video games, divorce, now lightsabers and I'm looking to get into scale crawlers.

So with that, I don't actually have anything at the moment but I'm looking to buy soon...pretty much decided upon the Axial Deadbolt rtr, since I don't have anything but tools. My how the industry has changed in regards to electrics....I think I'm most excited about that..

i'm in eastern NC if anyone is local and is willing to help this old newbie out with info and stuff..

Hey,

My name is Jason. I’ve had an SCX10 ii rtr for a couple of months now. My son got the K10 Ascender at the same time. We’ve been having a blast with them around our land here in Elizabeth, CO. I’ve been doing a few upgrades bfg krawler tires roof rack etc. Does anyone make a new 4 runner body?

Hello,

For sure a newbie here but I still consider myself fairly “mechanically inclined”. My name’s Max and I recently bought my first kit Rc, an ECX Barrage. Assembly went fairly smooth but within the first five to ten mins of run time in the living room I ran into a problem.

1. Noticed a slight clicking
2. Went to crawl up a step, instead of spinning, the motor revved and did not spin the tires
3. Checked the spur and the gear it touches, both fine
4. Noticed that the gears are fine but the motor is actually not spinning at all when under stress or during quick acceleration

Is this some sort of clutch problem? Can I open and repair the 390 motor the kit comes with? If so, is there an exploded view of the motor somewhere out there on the inter web?

Hey Gray, welcome back! Most the folks here are happy to help so just post up in the question-related forum and you should get an answer pretty quick. The green deadbolt (Scx10 OriGinal) is a good choice, but if you have the cash I'd go with a 2nd generation Scx10 ii for its upgraded design (axles, steering, CMS, battery location, metal links, etc). Another good option is the Redcat Gen7 Sport if you are short on cash; it's really popular right now.

Hi Jason, welcome to the addiction! Glad to see you are mixing it up with different models. How old is your son? Mine's turning 13 in December and will be upgrading from an Ax10 to an Scx10 on his birthday. :) For the Forerunner body I'd recommend Proline since they use thicker lexan than most. Here's a lead: https://www.google.com.pk/search?safe=active&q=Forerunner+lexan+body

What's up Dan, glad to see you on here. You must have some wrenching skillz if you're doing a scratch build! Check out the stickies in the Wraith section here and let us know if you have any questions: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial-wraith/

Nice to meet you! Where'd you find your scx10? Ebay? Craigslist? A friend? What electronics does it have? Ae-5 ESC? You an run a 3s lipo on that ESC, which is what most of us run, usually 1500-2200mah to keep the COG (center of gravity) down low. The stickies in this section should prove helpful to you finding a DIY CMS (chassis mounted servo) solution: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial-scx-10/

Welcome Pete! I think you will enjoy the slower crawling side of life. I've had Slash 2x4 and 4x4 as well as stadium trucks and even an rc10. I've also enjoyed the 1/36 Losi Micro-T and 1/24 ECX Tempers which are similar to the HSP Spirit. Currently I'm running an Scx10 ii and I hope my next micro is a 1/35 Orlando, which since you're into building might be a lot of fun. I hope to see you around on RCC. :)

Hey Stryker, you should be able to keep up with your RC4WD. It's more scale than the Gen7 IMHO, and has good aftermarket parts support. I'd pick up a $11 3s 2200mah lipo or two and a battery charger. Here's some more info to help you find what you need: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/newbie-general/519571-new-crawling;-what-buy-guide.html

Hello! Same as a lot of guys on here... new to crawling/ not new to rc. Current/ past vehicles include several Associated RC10GT's, Traxxas TMaxx, Kyosho MP7.5, Associated ( B4?), and my new cheap-o little crawler... an Exceed RC Stone 1/16th scale.

I'm going to need some help with upgrades for my 1/16 RC Stone crawler if anyone can point me towards the appropriate section to post in. Thanks!
Hey HPD, check out this thread:

Welcome to the crawling addiction! :)

Hey everyone I’m Tyler. I’m from Orange County California. I’ve been off and on with rc for years but was really wanting to get a crawler/trail rig. Out of the Axial lineup, which vehicle do you guys suggest is the most capable crawler and has some speed at the same time. Thanks guys. "thumbsup"
TBoe, really sorry it's taken us so long to get back to you. I'm surprised no one's been keeping an eye on this thread. Anyway to answer your question, I'd recommend the Scx10 ii available here:

http://www.rpphobby.com/category_s/...26&brand=Axial&search=Scx10+ii&show=60&page=1

For your other needs and questions, try reading my guide here and let me know if there's anything else I can do to help:

Yet another new guy here, but not new to RC. I kind of lost interest when I could no longer find parts for my old Kyosho Optima and all the racing buggies and stadium trucks just started looking so stupid. But then I stumbled on some YouTube videos of some scaler crawlers and that piqued my interest. Until I saw some price tags, that is. But then I saw the RGT Bowler on eBay at a reasonable price and with those oh so scale looking axles and I was sold! It should be here in a week or so and I'm excited to dive into the strange world of RC crawling! Jody is my name, but you can call me whatever you want...
Hey Jody, welcome to the addiction! I hope you'll post up a pic of your RGT Bowler and what you think of it as you run it around. Here are some more threads on that model:

Hey folks I'm Trev and I'm a crawler semi-noob ( more of a monster truck guy) from NC and I've got a coupe of questions. I'm trying to decide on a fun crawler that looks kinda scale. My boss has built a crawler track at his store and has let my try his Traxxas TRX4 on it. It seems to be really good, but its a bit pricey to me since I'm not a full time crawler fan yet.But i do like the 2 speed trans and the high ground clearance. A friend of mine was demoing his Everest Gen 7 and it was pretty cool but i've heard alot of bad or so so things about Redcat but the price is really good. So I'm trying to decide which one is the best bang for the buck. Are there mod to put the portal axles on the Gen7 or maybe the 2 speed? Oh the kicker is also my boss is wanting to eventually have competition crawling events at Big Toys Superstore in Winston Salem so I need to be able to have a crawler with some ability ( i.e not look too bad while crawling) without breaking my piggy bank too badly. Any ideas? Btw I really dont want to go above $550 absolute max.
Hey Trev, welcome to RCC! If you haven't bought your rig yet, I'd recommend the Scx10 ii available here:

https://www.rpphobby.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AX90047

You'll also need some other bits and bobs, like batteries, a charger, etc. Here's a guide I wrote up if you're interested:

Another Noob here. I'm from Long Island, NY. I have always wanted a "Good RC". I have had some toys in the past. Even had a COX car when I was little. I think it ran once. It wasn't really an RC, just a gas engine and you set the wheels in to the direction you wanted it to go. I had recently bought a Toy/Hobby grade car for $70 (WLToys 12428 ). Lots of fun. A bit of a basher. Semi good crawler, although it has open diffs. I've been taking it apart and modifying it. Biggest issue is that all of the parts come from China and takes two weeks to arrive. I haven't bought a true hobby grade RC crawler yet, but am looking into getting an Axial.

I also have a couple of Jeeps and have wheeled in the northeast. I figured RCs are a little less expensive when repairing. :)

-Rob
Hey Rob, welcome to RCC! Which Axial rigs are you looking at? New or used? I bought a used Scx10 ii in the Classifieds section here and it's been great. Here's more info on the Classifieds:

Let us know if you have any questions. :)
