'56 Ford Class 3 Comp Rig - The Closer

First things first, I have to give propers to Sam Collins (sam63). I was so impressed with his 66 ford light weight build, I had to build my own version. I hope I do justice to the original.

I ran my 8 Ball fj40 for the first 3 comps this year and really struggled. Now it's time to go to the Bullpen... For the Closer.

I had some leftover axles and trans from my ultra light wraith last season. Including custom Delrin links I made with 1/4" rod. All attached to a TSS skid.

Using a dinky link front steering mount.

Using a combo of rcbros and blue monkey knuckle weights. (These are allowed in our local club)

A few sketches for dim and scale and the work begins.

Plan for parts is as follows:
Scx plastic trans housing (for weight)
CI foams and 6 bolt with proline swampers, and extended trans outputs
HH servo and brxl
Castle Bec
Vanquish knuckles and chubs
Team Brood 30t Apocalypse on 3s
Max drive shafts
Od/Ud gears f/b
Rjspeed 56 ford low rider body.
Dlux swaybar

Things escalated quickly with this build.

Started the front end body support.

Set on the skid with tires

The rear shock mount/chassis area.

Sitting good and ready for sandblast and paint.

Flat black cuz it's bad a$$

This really was a quick chassis to build. I understand why Sam only posted a few pics. When you make something to be minimal it doesn't take a lot of fiddling around.

Great truck Dana and it preformed fantastically what I saw of it and that 56 Ford cab painted mat black with the flame job looked really sharp. You do it all so very well my friend. It was funny my eye picked it out of the crowd right away. I asked Derrick to grab it for me thats when the uncontrollable drooling started it's a super cool ride. "thumbsup"

Thanks Sam. I'm only trying to do my best. Since I can't have your chassis I just had to build my own ;-)

I decided to go servo horn down on the dinky link. It has drawbacks but I really haven't had a real issue yet.

All the electronics mounted on a 0.20 al plate under the hood

My first new brood motor. I got some second hand team motors in my xr10 that were really good so I figured wth. I ordered on a Sunday arrived on Wednesday. Amazing service.

Fronts and rears are both 3.5" traxxas big bores with cap mods. The front has mini-t soft fronts with jeepindoug spring cups. The rear has mini-t rear soft springs with an unknown brand of no-preload spring cup.

My goal for the rig was less than 6lbs. Here is the rtr wt as she sits.

Went over to a buddies to test her out. Mounted up some pitbull rb2s to another set of 6bolts. Hoping the extra 1/4" helps out.

I noticed my rock sliders really catching on the rocks especially when trying to break over certain obstacles. Definitely took the brunt of the scratches.

Did some hacking and cutting and rebrazing to get some more clearance on the front of the slider.

I had the original body I started the project with. It was painted with colors I didn't want so I used acetone to clean it out. Needless to say I let some of it sit too long and cracked the plastic. Some shoe goo to fix and I painted the outside of it as a practice body to beat the crap out of. A fresh body was used for the black w/ flames body.

I got it put together for the 4th comp of the summer up in Duluth, Mn. Performed really well. Need some more drive time to fully get her dialed in plus some suspension tweaks are in order. Finished in 2nd in our 2.2 trail class for the day. It rained during my run on course 2. A couple dumb mistakes and a rock face that was as slick as ice kept me too far back of 1st.

Quick update. At the last comp the rear axle definitely didn't have enough weight. Plus I was looking to strengthen the front axle without adding too much weight.

Found these on FB. A supplier selling "crawl tubes". Making them out of Al and brass. In addition he taps the holes for the axle truss. It's a nice option that is different than the typical steel tube. Putting Al in the front and brass in the rear.

The Al is only 0.5 oz

Brass is 1.5oz

The fit is really tight. Having the tapped hole for the truss is awesome. I actually picked up another Al one for my Yeti.

I prefer the dlux mounts. It puts the weight of the servo lower and servo horn on the same plane as knuckle arms.

The dinky mount isn't bad. It being steel and raised and centered upper links and putting the servo lower an stock.

I haven't seen or heard of bent upper links or upper links screw.

I have seen people break the carbon fiber plates around the upper links mount on the plates. I have the ultra 4 G10 plates with steering mounts it includes Delrin piece that runs the length of long side of wraith axle. I think if Erik offered around or more 3mm carbon fiber plates they hold better than his current plates and even stronger than G10 plates. The other thing I like about dlux mounts is upper link adjust at the axle.

It's the rears that have the bent screw issue. After Dana pointed it out I went home and checked mine and sure shit, it was bent.
