Ten people were killed and at least 39 others were wounded in shootings across the city this weekend.

Joel Sanroman, 42, shot in the head early Saturday as he drove in the 3100 block of West 53rd Street in the Gage Park neighborhood.

Adrian Cruz, 24, shot multiple times around 7 p.m. Saturday while standing in the 5900 block of South Fairfield Avenue in Chicago Lawn.

Vincent Fitts, 22, found shot in the head at 7:50 p.m. Saturday near 79th and Cottage Grove Avenue.

Jeremy Anthony, 24, who police believe drove himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center after being shot in the back while sitting in his car in the 6300 block of South Ellis Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

Bert Lindsey, 36, killed early Sunday from shots fired from a passing vehicle into a backyard party in the 7500 block of South Wolcott Avenue in Auburn-Gresham.

Equilla Coleman, 24, and two others were found shot early Sunday in the 1400 block of West 53rd after police nearby heard gunfire and found them with gunshot wounds.

Anthony Scott, 19, died Sunday -- two days after he was shot in the 6300 block of North Oakley Avenue by a man who called him over to his vehicle.

George Marrero, 27, was killed at 10:50 p.m. Sunday during a gang-related drive-by shooting in the 1300 block of North Harding Avenue.

An unidentified 34-year-old man was shot multiple times in the chest about 1:35 a.m. Monday. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he later died.

Non-fatal shootings ranged across the city from Jefferson Park to West Pullman. Among them were a 1-year-old girl and her mother, both grazed by bullets Sunday afternoon in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

Most recently, a man was shot in both legs about 1:45 a.m. while sitting in Ogden Park in the South Side Englewood neighborhood, police said. He was taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

At least 33 others were wounded in shootings since Friday evening.

If you ever come to visit... STAY AWAY FROM THE SOUTH and WEST SIDES!

I don't even like going through the airport there, why in gods name would I want to venture out into the city? :ror:

Still, I'm glad I moved to the middle of nowhere. The gunshots I hear now don't bother me at all.

Chicago is a blast in the summer... you should come visit "thumbsup"
It's really like 2 different cities, very segregated.

Generally, downtown and the north side are pretty safe, no one messes with ya... you may need to beat down the occasional Cubs fan, but that's about it ;-)

Guns don't kill people...Chicagoans do.

I don't think I could live in a city, but I really liked visiting Chicago.

In town for a conference in June. Got bleacher seats for Cubs/Tigers game while I'm there. Gonna be a first time visit to Wrigley for me...

I'm here mostly for work.
I didn't plan on staying... but I ended up meeting a city girl and I'm having a hell of a time getting her to move!

I'd like to end up in CO or the SW someplace.
My daughter wants to go to school in CO... that's a step in the right direction ;-)

Are you bringing a crawler?
If ya have time, I can show you around "thumbsup"

Population of Chicago: 2,695,598
People shot over the weekend in Chicago: 49

That equals a 0.002% chance of getting shot....sounds fair to me.

I wonder how that percentage compares to the people who get hurt or killed because of the train or bus system there.....probably similar or lower.

A report from the 2007 edition of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, “Would banning firearms reduce murder and suicide?” by Gary A. Mauser and Don B. Kates.

The authors note that gun control proponents frequently argue that guns are uniquely available in the U.S., compared to other developed nations, which is why this country has a far higher murder rate. “Though this has been endlessly repeated,” they wrote, “in fact (it) is false and … substantially so.”

Many countries in Europe are much more violent than the U.S., and they are those with the most stringent gun laws. It seems hardly a coincidence that in America, the highest crime rates are in places with strict gun control policies, such as Chicago and Washington, D.C. However, in areas with high rates of gun ownership, violent crime rates are lower.

The authors noted, that in the U.S. during the 25-year period from 1973 to 1997, the overall gun ownership increased 103 percent and handgun ownership went up 163 percent, yet during that period, the murder rate dropped 27.7 percent.

It is estimated there are more than 3.5 million Americans with license to carry concealed handguns in 40 states and the adoption of state laws allowing these citizens to carry guns has not resulted in more murder or violent crime in these states. Rather, adoption of these statutes has been followed by very significant reductions in murder and violence in these states.

Cool....we are quoting news stories now.

Where's that story about the neighborhood watch guy with a CCW who shot and killed the young (unarmed) kid....?

The crime rate of a country or city isn't only related to their gun laws...there are other factors at play.

So...if I'm doing the math right...if we increase gun sales by 500%, we should be able to achieve a 0% murder rate.

Lets get on that post haste. "thumbsup"

That is all meaningless without knowing what the crime rates were BEFORE the gun control policies were enacted. Chances are that the violent crime rate hasn't swung much, and that the laws were enacted because the violence was so bad. And as Jeremy stated, many other things are at play, not just laws.

That article makes it sound like gun control is the reason for the violence, like you could implement tough gun laws in an otherwise peaceful area and watch everything go to shit.
