even tho' an orange cage seemed the opinion...

eh... just flipped a coin ;-)
and ended up doing this...

a big "thank you" 1st, to kgb424 for his contribution to my build,
of the HR alloy AR60 diff covers.

ignore the screws holding...
is just a temporary hold/fix.

Neither is perfect... but good enough for now.





think I may end up cutting out and replacing the upper forward cage tube
similar to what I did at the lower.
The lower looks acceptable... so what the heck.


The difficulty in prepping this body...
is that no matter how well/fine it is sanded...
it keeps creating hairs or filaments that are nearly impossible to remove.

plus the gouges would need filling using primer/sanding.
and I didn't feel like hassling with it... this round
...so it is... what it is... for now.

I'll guess it might be wiser to PD
the body and cage prior to gouging it up !? :doh:
Think I'll prep/PD the alternative body before I screw that one up.

Regardless....
The Koi orange PD is fairly close match and blends fairly well "thumbsup"
Maybe a slight more redish tinge then the original orange...
but close enough for me.

Now just need see if the PD makes it more durable
then it was having bare plastic in the rocks prior ;-)

I liked the color before but this actually looks even better. Goes well with the black accents. Surprised it is dipped. Can't even tell. Nice work.

plenty of gouges still showing thru.
I'm guessing I should have used some primer/sanding prior to PD application.
Still might change to an orange cage..
But for this round... didn't want the black velcro holding the rear of the
bi-mini top... sticking out like a sore thumb when the top was removed ;-)

I think the color is swell and also think the black accentuates...
breaking up the Koi orange some.
Gonna have to adhere my black HH's decal(s) to the side panels/hood...
that should break up the Koi just a little bit more.

It's not technically dipped...
it's rattle can sprayed on using PD's Koi orange.
3 coats of Koi and a single glossifier coat for a slight sheen.

IMO... looks good from far, but far from good.
think I'll try to cleaning up the fuzzy's a little and add another coat or two.
If that don't cut mustard... I'll probably hafta' do it over.

The PD does not do well with hiding imperfections.
tho' a sanded primer base coat may work to hide the scarring better.
I was just concerned if primer would adhere to and flex with this particular plastic.

Cool thing about using the PD...
is that it should peel off without too much difficulty.
So I could try for better on round two !?

basically this was just a test to see what happens ;-)

My rear axle seemed a little off center in relation to chassis and body
and so the Rr axle needed shift 'bout 3/16" to the driver's side.

I believe the truss/link mount is not centering the links on the axle as it should.
Some have mentioned an Axial production flaw
and that it has since been noted/corrected.
But I've yet to see one of these corrected trusses !?

Sooo... instead
repositioned the pass. side upper link ball end
doing this shifts/centers the axle equally beneath the chassis.
And without need of altering link lengths
nor effecting the drive shaft/pinion angle.

really simple to do...
cost is no more then the price of a single longer 3mm bolt ;-)

~ I will also revisit this shortly and add a spacer to center and maybe a washer on the outer ball end ~

^ not sticking with my last link mount fix... because

Spoke with a tech at Greatplanes today
regarding the AR60 axle truss/axle misalignment.

The tech there told me the production issue/fault was 3 years back
and that there shouldn't be any current Axial kits with this issue :roll:

But oddly... I believe mine are the flawed truss/link mounts :not sure:
I purchased my Wraith kit on 7/10/15 so that is well past the 3 year re-tool.

So possibly... I was sold a 3 year old "new kit" !? :shock: :x

Was purchased thru my local hobby store...
But I know for fact it was special ordered thru Tower Hobbies.
...Hmmm

Anyways the tech at Greatplanes didn't really know that difference
and is mailing me the currently produced trusses. ( AX80072 )
and I'm hopeful that it resolves the issue I'm having with centering my axle's.

As was stated by some, but disputed by others (confusion)
the current truss production shows the link mount ears
centered between the servo plate bosses.

and so... hopefully this is the correct fitting/current truss/link mount...



I'll doubt this discussion will be a concern
for future potential purchases.
But if anyone has the flawed trusses...
I would call Greatplanes and get that rectified.

I'm just relieved to learn that possibly my trusses are not correct
and that Greatplanes is still willing to make attempt in correction.

Nice catch and write up Dell. I have axles waiting for my body to arrive on my next build so I busted out the calipers and I am good. Thanks for the heads up.

...not 100% sure I got it right

a user (maslin) commented in my thread posted in the Wraith folder...
says I got it backwards and that the center link mount ears
positioned between the servo bosses is the older/flawed style mount ?

But every Wraith/Ridgecrest truss I'm seeing when googled
including alloy aft mkt stuff and the Axial website http://www.axialracing.com/products/ax80072
shows the link mount ears centered between the servo plate bosses.

Guess I'll know (for sure) when I receive the set from GP's.

I just know the truss(s) I have currently... do not center my axle
unless I monkey rig the link mounting positions.

got those new axle truss/link mounts from Tower Hobbies

They are in fact what I already have :cry:
and so the latest OCP truss/link mount (inboard) ears
are seemingly what's currently produced.
And is the only one being produced... that I know of.

But I need try the other truss/link mount
that positions the ears offset farther from the axle's center chunk.

sooo...

gonna trade with eric113 for an older offset pair
just to see if those might shift my axle towards the driver's side slightly.

Cause are not the aftermarket ones using the replacements you just received

As reference too where the link mounts go and there spacing

From the replacement Axial trusses

Cause I seen GPM makes aluminium Wraith axles trusses that are made in China

That look very close to your new ones except, there are no holes under the link mounts

Here's what mine is doing using the current AX80072 OCP link mount...
~ hopefully this picture better details my axle mis-alignment !? ~

The axle sits evenly @ 90* to the chassis.
But is shifted to the Passenger side 3/16" or so.
Axle(s) pinion output angles look great.

I have no clue as to why this is occurring !?
If the link mount is supposedly OC to the axle ? hmm
My chassis is square... but I'll double check to be sure I haven't mixed up my link postitioning (I'll guess anything is possible)
And of course... swap to the offset link mounts and see what those net me ?

I'll need shift the axle maybe 3/16" (ish) towards the driver's side.
Gonna get it right... one way or another ;-)


( feel free to point out anything obvious that I might be missing ? )

My Humvee was doing the same thing

I flipped the link/shock mount over too the stock position cause the where flipped on my Wraith to lower the center of gravity

and I adjusted and evened out all my links eye to eye with my hex drivers

cause they were uneven and I corrected them when I sleeved them

and that eliminated the shift it was making to one side

I don't know what I did, cause I didn't have to turn the links much

too even them out, but it did make a big difference in centering up the axle

and evening out the spacers for the lower shock mounts and now both the same size before

one side was longer than the other

Try flipping your shock/lower link mounts over

And see if it shifts every thing towards the direction you need

cause for some reason the is also a difference between the first set of chassis rails and the second set

Maybe cause the shock loop were part of the chassis, its seem to more squared up and aligned better

with the second chassis with the shock/lower link mounts flipped and the links evened out

That squared every thing up and centered the axles

cause I thought the same thing it was the trusses or something was off

No it was my dumbass not seeing the shock/link mounts flipped and same with the links

until I evened them out eye to eye made big differences

^ you keep making mention of flipping the lower shock mounts...

but if you look at any of my pictures you will see...
that mine are mounted as the instructions illustrate.
The shock(s) mounting does not position or center anything...
and flipping the lower shock mount only alters ride height.
Swapping the lower S mounts L - R, mirroring, F - R changes nothing.

Only thing different on mine is...
that I mount the lower end of the shocks
to the outside of the lower mounts. (slightly progressive)
But all four are mounted equally distanced on both the lower/upper mounts.

I measured my custom made links when they arrived
and they were equal in length and bend angle(s).
They were packaged in pairs... Uppers/Lowers - Front/Rear
Thought it would be a straight forward install... But it's seemingly not.

I'll double check my link lengths and make compensation there, with them,
if necessary...
I'll hope the other truss/link mount gets me closer...
but if it doesn't...
Then I will alter whatever I have to, to get this axle nearer center.

It's not real bad... just not centering precisely as I thought it would.
I'm sure I'll figure out what needs occur and make adj. accordingly.

I thank you for your input...
but it's not switching on any light bulbs in my head.
