Wheel mounting question

As part of my cheap cheerful Chinese cheater build I bought some carbon/aluminium wheels from AliExpress.

All good except the hole in the middle is 7mm and my usual flanged nuts barely touch the sides.

I’ve seen some Traxxas hex/washer/top-hat nuts that would bring the fitting size up to 6mm diameter but the drive pin in the hex’s looks to be further out than would suit my Capra copy axles.

I like the top-hat nut idea (looks as though it would help align the hex wheel and nut) but it wants to be 7mm. Or a hex with a 7mm spigot on the outer face?

Any ideas?

not 100% sure what your talking about but it sounds like you need the old axial style hexs or old vanquish style slw hubs
if im understanding what your saying maybe some thing like these might work

I'd need a hex with the sticky out round bit on both sides, both against the bearing and into the wheel.

I was also looking at these things with the top-hat nuts and big washers.

EDIT I was having a brain fart earlier, the things I've linked to above should work fine. Ignore me until they arrive and I'll see if they work at that point.

SSD does make wheel plugs for the 7mm ID wheels

The plug only helps if you are concerned the wheel isn't centered by the 12mm hex alone.

I run these in some wheels and not others since they really don't do much.

The flange nuts and most washers I have in my parts bin have OD of 9-9.5mm. I run these and have not had any problem with the wheels being damaged or coming loose.

If you're still concerned the easiest fix is to get M4 washers with oversized OD from someplace like McMaster-Carr. You can get steel or stainless steel washers with an OD of 10-14mm.

Shipping from McMaster can be brutal but I start there to see if something is available and you can usually search the internet and find it elsewhere too.

I think what you are looking for are some Axial 12mm Hex Hubs, either AX30329 or AX30429. I can' find any info on what the difference is between the two (2). These are used on some Axial stock wheels that have a 7mm hole and fit a 5mm axle.

There is also an Axial washer, AXA1090, that has a 14mm OD and was generally used when the AX30329 or AX30429 hubs were used. This solved the issue you've identified with the wheel nut not having a large enough OD to properly clamp the wheel. You will need to confirm the wheels you are using have at least a 14mm diameter flat for the washer to sit against.

Both the hubs and washers are metal (aluminum?) and are available Axial (Horizon Hobbies) or from a number of different aftermarket manufacturers. As 89Industries has indicated, a 4mm flat washer will work too. I've done that a couple of times. Also, a #6 SAE (ANSI) flatwasher can work if you file the ID of the washer slightly bigger, it only needs to be enlarged a few thousands of an inch.
