What the newest cheap servo hotness?

I think what people need to realize is that some people in this hobby are bound to break $150 servos monthly while others will go years on a plastic gear servo. I know someone who blows up his Honda S2000 yearly while my mom's WS6 hasn't had a single issue. Do you use every last bit of performance from (aka ABUSE) your servo? Then pay up.

That said, I've had good luck with the PDI-6221MG. It can take 8v+, has a s***-ton of holding torque, and is fairly quick. HobbyKing has them, but I bought a pack of 4 for under $10 each. The only time I've killed a servo was from over-volting it, that includes 20+ years & many S3003's.

ProModelers ready! Ordered up just an hour ago. Can't wait! Thanks to you guys here on RCC for helping me discover an awesome servo when I was in dire need of a solid unit. Can't wait to give it a rip on the rock's!

I'm not sure if people will consider these giants reasonable for a 1/10 scale crawler, but I had to post for the wow factor alone. These popped up on my ebay "sponsored items"...

Stainless Steel gears, looks like a 25T spline, same weight as a high-end Savox. They're just twice the thickness and w/o mounting tabs. Fairly inexpensive considering their torque ratings...

No mounting ears, I had one of the same mfgr(alturn) fail immediately , that was the P2

Couple of gear separation failures here.

Hang up and Drive

I don't know if it's been mentioned here already, but what's the word on the TowerPro MG959? I've had good luck with the mg958, but the mg959 has a full cnc case and 32kg/444oz torque @6v for about $32: Tower Pro Digital MG959 servo

I just ordered the Turnigy version of this servo. Once it comes across the pond, I plan to try it out and report my findings. The reading that I've done seems to be favorable.

I run a Solar D772 in our rigs straight off the 2s Lipo. No problems at all in 2 years. They are rated at 7.4v, so no BEC needed as long as your running a 2s. BEC's are overrated and not needed AS LONG AS, you don't exceed the voltage the servo can handle. I have only my signal wire and black wire going to the receiver, red positive comes straight from battery. I might have the black going to the battery also I can't remember. But I have it wired to a JR servo plug that way I don't have to rewire everything in case I need to get a new servo, it would be a fast easy swap. I have two Castle BEC's along with the field programmer collecting dust in my parts drawer.

Also, we bury ours in water and mud, the Solar D772 is still pumping....

I'm looking forward to your review now that you've got one.

No review yet, but it came in last night, so I took it apart. :ror:

I'm impressed so far. The CNC'd housing is a beauty. The center section is extruded, but the ends and the piece between the gears and the motor are CNC'd. They fit together so well that it was very difficult to separate the end from the sandwiched section, and I never wound up getting the back cap off, but since it's just a PCB in there, I didn't try too hard.

The gears look great too. I don't know what they're made out of, but they're too dark to be aluminum. I'm guessing some blend of stainless.

Looks interesting, it definitely doesn't have the generic motor most cheaper servos use.

Can you tell if the gears are alum, steel, or titanium?

The specs on the tower pro say metal, and if its a copy then hopefully they kept them metal. Last tower pro I bought said Ti gears but John Holmes said no one makes full Ti gears (example: hitec), just coated Ti.

any feedback on the JX CLS6336HV ? Sounds like a winner for $33

I can't really tell by looking at them. They don't look like aluminum because they're too dark, but if they're coated with something, that could be the reason. They don't look like steel to me either... they look like stainless.

For a entry level SCX10 what would be a good servo? My son will use this probably once a week for crawling around my yard. I would be using a BEC set at 6v.

Thanks,
Ken

I was thinking the same thing. You got a magnet to check?
