What the newest cheap servo hotness?

My 55.00 servo lasted hours, even 40.00 Savox lasted much longer.
I've found to buy quality first and save many times over

I agree in some cases, but not in others. Servos are one of the cases where I disagree. Price doesn't seem to be an indication of life expectancy at least not in my experiences.

Yup, anyways we've been through all that "I'll save more in the end if I buy cheap servos because you know they're all going to break eventually" I'll let those people keep telling themselves that while I wait patiently on John's highly acclaimed unit(s).

I hope my driving ability keeps me from breaking the pin on my "early-adopter" Holmes Hobbies SHV500... If so, I'll send it in for the brass bushing insert upgrade and hardened pin replacement. But I feel I ought to pick up a backup. I am working OT this week and may pick up the PM 420, or just get that new Power HD DW-25LV WP crawler servo for $50-$65.

Update for evo p2: I got some 2x5x0.3 washers from amain today (they actually measure 0.36mm thickness) and there perfect, gears line up and doesn't lock up the servo. Hopefully the gears will last now.

Well I'm bummed, I just can't wait, Sorry John, I popped for a Holmes.
Tired of not turning in the rocks. I will compare the two, I suspect they both are sweet .

I took my Holmes SHV500 back to my lhs for a full refund, I broke that pin too and didn't want to wait. I was very happy they refunded me without question. The manager in the surface section of this shop said he'd broke it 3 times after send ins..
Did not know there was an upgrade to the bushing and pin..
I guess the PM's aren't ready yet and believe it or not the Hitec 645mg that I put in a pinch is still pumping. Was eyeing these PowerHDs for a while too especially since the release of the crawler specific one with a silhouette of a rig printed on the side of it.

I picked mine up with RPP's 15% sale I'm hoping updated pin mod already, if not usps works.

May you have good luck with the SHV. Seems RPP keeps an updated stock so I'm sure you'll have the updated version.
Putting together my new shocks right now (RSD 90mm piggybacks) and taking my scx10ii out for a boulder/rocky creek session today, maybe I'll finally do in the little 645 so I have an excuse to buy a PowerHD. If the PM420s were ready It'd be those but...

Just put the PM in the wraith, set it at 8v and seems pretty good. I'm totally happy with it in the bully, so when the Holmes arrives , into the wraith it goes . I'm curious about the extra torque, only 50 or so, but at that area it might be noticeable, can't wait to see. I am worried about the pin issue as John addressed it with bushings in the cover , not sure what the Holmes latest is, hope not to find out!

I was kind of holding out for another Promodeler myself, but I've burned through all my spare servo's (rtr take offs) and have an old JR with something like 40 oz of torque in my Wraith right now. Surprisingly that poor thing survived a bash day at the dunes yesterday, but I'd be setting myself up for failure if I didn't get something new coming.

Soooo... buy $40ish worth of cheap servo (which could be 4x mg958, or 1x something else?) or cough up twice as much and go with a Savox 1283sg? I just can't see spending $60+ on an off-brand, unproven servo, even if the specs do look good. All out power isn't the most important, but durability is. Without breaking the $100 mark, what else is out there that is as good as the 1283 strictly from a durability standpoint?

I recently stripped out the tactic servo that came with my Wraith combo. Tried a rebuild kit, lasted 3 mins. I just replaced it with a savox SW-0231mg. Anyone have any luck with these? I was going to put the Power HD WP-23kg in, but didn't want to wait til after the holiday weekend. My brother has had the Power HD in his bomber for 3 months and its taken a beating with no issues.

I have 3 of those servos on my scale crawlers and am quite happy with their reliability and performance far.

Had high hopes for the evoP2. Less than one month on it and one of the two piece gears came apart. I don't know why companies use these.

That's what happened to mine, I got a refund. Bought the Holmes.I would silver solder it, should work better than peening

You didn't do the washer mod that was invented by 84yoda? I guess it works really good so far for him. But on the other hand, you shouldn't have to bust into a brand new servo and do a mod to keep it from breaking.

No shim in the world will keep a press fit gear from spinning inside another gear. All the teeth are fine, it should look like this...

Ya, all the shim does is line up the gears so they hopefully won't strip as easy. But that gear breaking is another story. Damn, that sucks.
