viper's creeper build

That looks great. I have a very small pile started, need to work on it before snow time comes. I want to do the scale-ish touches like bridges and other structures, maybe rope bridge.
 
looking forward to these shafts coming a reality.

by the way, i'm thinking about putting together a course in my backyard. i have space and a lots of rocks. i just need to draw up how i want it to look. does anyone else have pics of a backyard crawler course?
 
There are many long threads with a ton of pics in the general section. I have been saving pics of all the backyard type courses I can find onto my harddrive.
 
okay i talked to my buddy today and we discussed the new axles and made some changes to them and we decided to try a newer material called stressproof i will try to get some info on it tonight but here are some more crappy pics of the revised drawings of the axles

okay the strength ratings of the material are as follows

tensile strength 115,000 psi ( min)
yield strength 100,000 psi ( min)
and i have read alot of articles that state it is very strong stuff and wears exceptionally well all without any further heat treating ( other than what is done at manufacturer , also this stuff is pretty inexpensive to buy and really easy to machine ( a 1/2" dia. 12" long piece is about $ 1.50 )
 
viper the top one does look a simpler and stronger design,

the strength of stressproof sounds ok (or at least to me anyway).
how does it compare to other materials that are used for crawler shafts.

from everything i have read about stressproof it is some very interesting stuff it comes from the factory with a hardness of around 25-30r and they way it is manufactured they have a special process that relieves the internal stresses that come from the manufacturing process so it will handle quite a bit of stress it was desigend to use for shafts and can withstand alot of twisting force so i really think it is going to work out well for making an axle shaft
 
viper,,,the numbers on Stress Proof are decent however I think you should look at ETD150 and Fatigue Proof.The numbers are better for these two metals for Ultimate and Yield Tensile Strength and both are looking less brittle with Rockwell ratings down in the 30's.

yeah i have looked at those materials as well and future sets may be made out of those but my machinist can get this material for free ( well at least enough to make the first set ) and i will see how well they hold up to my driving . the new drawings are at the machinist , i have to get a die for the threads they are m4x0.7 and my machinist doesn't have that one but hopefully he can get started on the shafts soon "thumbsup"
 
well the cost is a factor as well and i thought the rockwell rating on the stressproof was 25-30 so wouldn't that be less brittle than the higher rating on fatigueproof and etd150? i will try to get some pics of the machining process but i can't promise them cause i work alot in the evenings and as such i don't get to go to his shop alot and i can't really ask him to take the pics cause he is doing this set for free ( material and machine time ) now if these work out and i have him make some more sets then i will have a price and then maybe i can get some cutting shots . i would like to make these availible to the creeper drivers but i also don't have a vendor star or any star for that matter , so for now i am going with the one set to see how they do and then we will figure out the rest . also i was looking at 4140 or similar but the heat treater wants $75 to do the heat treating on one piece or 40 pieces so i had to look at other materials.
