viper's creeper build

okay well the last comp didn't go the greatest i finished second to last , the rig just didn't seem to perform well. so today i sat down and went over everything to see what i was missing , well i found it ( actually three problems ) the steering link seemed to be to short ( had too much toe out ) my rear shocks were sticking and they were rubbing the upper links when flexed . i also had a problem with my front driveshaft coming apart (the end kept popping off the u-joint( at one point it popped out so hard that it hit me in the leg ) so i finally made a new longer shaft for my hr driveshaft so it would fit .
so i proceeded to tear apart the rear suspension so i could fix the issues , to start i moved the upper links rear mounting point to the inner mounting point on the truss . i then put spacers on the front mounting point so the angles would stay the same . now to turn my attention to the shocks , one of the shafts had a rough spot on it so i chucked it in the drill and cleaned up the shaft with 800 wet/dry( nice and smooth now and no leaks ) .
after i reassembled everything it works nice and smoothly now( no bind no rubbing ) , then i took the steering link apart and added spacers to both sides . while i was working on the frontend i replaced the ripped out c-hub screws with 6-32 screws for now ( i still left the zip ties on it as well ) .

so maybe now after all of the work it will crawl better................. more testing to follow .

2nd to last is better than a DNF "thumbsup".

I'm still running plastic c and steering knuckle. I'm not sure how the mega torque Hitech and aluminum links haven't destroyed them yet. They keep flexing and binding and I wonder if I'll pee a little when they finally do pop.

okay i got some new toys for fathers day so i thought i would post some pics as well as pics of the improved flex since i did the modifications .

I am also running the same setup.. mine sits a touch higher in the rear, as my rear shocks are in a lower set of holes in the chassis.. crawls great an real predictable.. I just wish I had more vertical stand up.. how's urs? I'm getting my back wheels bout 3 inches from a rock an lopsibg weight in my front wheels an can't get any bite out of them.. I can get a touch of traction in dig, but a roll over in 4wheel..

That sure is a sweet looking rig. Keep us informed on the next comp. Plus more creeper porn is always good too!

HI viper, how bout them tires! How do they work for ya? I'm also wondering bout ur vertical climb.. like coming from a flat to the face of a 12" rock. Will ur setup allow you to reach the top of that rock to allow you to crawl it without rolling over backwards? If so ill have to test out ur rear shock placement. Other then that setup looks pretty close...

i will let you know after my next comp which is this saturday ( gonna be a scorcher out ) as far as vert. climbs go are you talking about a flat faced 12" rock or an angled face ? i still haven't built a climb board to see what kind of angle it will hold ( guess i need to get off my kiester and build one )

so i finally got started on my creeper based scaler ( well at least creeper axled ) , i got the frame from one of the members of my local club ( it is made from steel square tube bent and then cut lengthwise with steel tube crossmembers ) . i wanted to use a transfer case setup so i could have a better interior , and i didn't really have the money to spend buying one so it was time to dig through the parts bin . i used a input shaft from a stampede trans along with a pinion and another input shaft gear on a stainless steel shaft , i made the side plates out of a cutting board and a couple bearings . i got the rear axle positioned with the lower links , still have to make the upper links and then i get to start on the front axle . i have had the humvee body for a little while now , i still have plenty of cutting to do on the body . so here are the pics of the way it sits so far .

Flat faced.. like ur rig is goin to walk up over it an ur rear wheels are on the ground, do you end up rolling over or do you have good vertical balance an you can climb something if ur straight up an down...

Ok, cool. It seems to be better, or I just don't notice as much since I'm getting use to dig.. I know its working tho, I'm getting the sides of my front lower links scrapped up.. not just the bottom.. its crazy what it will do.. good luck at the comp, will be waiting for scores an pics. Not that pics ever work out that great at a comp.. its bout the last thing ya worry bout when ur comping...
