Tribute to my Dad's 79 F100 featuring Banzai

Re: Tribute to my Dad's 79 F-150 RANGER LARIAT

That chrome paint looks great! Teasers looking good also. Can't wait for a real pic!

thank you sir!
best part is, the winch line will go right through the grill slots!
i will have to borrow a technique somebody did with zipties for a radiator... ;)
and its now painfully obvious i need inner fenders lol

*i was tempted, for a second, to cut the whole hood off and put hinges on it. but... the grill has a tab to hold it in that affixes to the hood.
eh... that would also mean i need a scale engine and drivetrain...
save that feature for v2.0 ;)

Mirrors are almost done...

Need a new dremel to carve out the grill area of the lexan. Too scary with just exacto and curved body scissors.

*well, sometimes you just gotta go "EFF IT." "thumbsup"

TEASER!

28j8voi.jpg

We have the same front end hole:ror: ...that sounds wrong

I better make some progress, you are making me feel slack.

It’s looks super!

Damn Shinchu, I cheated and was just looking at the Rc nerds pieces on Shapeways. You put them to work! The dash looks spot on! I am definitely going to order the mirrors, wipers and emblems for my build as they are perfect. Sadly the dash is too narrow for the jconcepts body because it is appears to be exact to the 1980. Thanks for the tip man!

wait, who the what in the huh now?
glad you pulled the trigger on some RC Nerds stuff, its incredible! just make sure you put effort into hitting them with Tamiya primer, sanding with 600, more primer, 600, primer, 600, then 1500. its worth the effort!

now whats this about the dash?
i cant really do it for a couple reasons:
1. its wider than Jconcepts because RC Nerds made all this based off the proline 79 ford cab, and that's wider than Jconcepts 79 ford. (not much an issue as Pawel worked with me to narrow the grill and bumper)
2. the GCM forward motor mount relocates the 540 can so it sits RIGHT where the dash would go. i would have to cut a motor diameter hole in the dash and disguise it as some new fangled CB radio. (or go with a brushless HH revolver stubby, but its sensorless and also would cost almost $200 so... not sure i would be happy spending that much for a sensorless BL setup that would most likely cog?)

so really #2 is a huge deal breaker and i most likely wont put any interior features in this truck at all :(
that's why i want to make version 2.0 with that Korean 3D printed 79 body. i just cant justify the $250+ on that body (with bed topper!) right now. but i will in the future. maybe on a CMAX...?

i think you mean the RC Nerds dashboard wont work on YOUR truck because its a '79 and yours is an '80? in that case you are correct. but i'll throw you a bone... i think AMPRO is working on an 80's dash? granted its for the Tamiya blackfoot, but he might be able to widen it for ya.

That GCM piece is stunning

What I was trying to say is that the RC Nerds 79 dash would be perfect for a 1980. It looks to be the same. I am guessing Ford carried it over from the 79. Problem for my application is that it lacks width. The proline is clearly narrower than the jconcepts. I could ask them to proportionally widen it potentially.

Ampro makes the Blackfoot stuff but all of it is small and needs to be redesigned. I was hoping to use the tail lights...again to small. I have contacted Ampro about it but have yet to hear back.

That GCM piece is stunning

It might be a bit ambitious, but have considered trying to build a styrene dash

odd... when i google image search for "1980 ford truck dash", i get these...

Hmmm. Either my memory is failing or I had the wrong dashboard. Likely the former. It’s been roughly 17 years since I sold it

Have you watched the Revolver videos on JRH's channel?

They DON'T cog, get a good ESC and you're set - He has had excellent luck pairing them with the new Sidewinder 4.

Although, the Stubby might not be enough for a TRX-4 - I'd email Holmes Hobbies for details... His videos have (I think) all shown the standard-sized Revolver in the TRX-4...

Hoping this helps.....

Thanks but its not going in a trx4... GET OUTTA HERE WITH THAT TRAITOROUS SPEAK!!! LOL

Yeah i will check into it.
Currently running a hh brushed esc in this truck and its great. Just the darned awesome GCM forward mount kit maked any standard sized 540 motor stick back through the dash area. A stubby is the only way i could manage that, unless i just went up in body size.
I plan on a bigger body anyway, so throwing 200 bucks at a new bruslhess setup seems like a waste.

Also for what its worth, the 27t tamiya 540 has never been too hot to touch, just warm even on 3S.

I spaced out, not sure what happened...

The stubby is probably fine for the Ascender, because it's much lighter than a TRX-4! :ror:

Does that get me back in your good graces? "thumbsup"

You were never NOT in my good graces!
Just wanted you to sit and think all weekend about what you did hahaha

Messin with ya man ;)

Just to keep me confused for the future, my ex-coworker (and still my good friend) just picked up a TRX-4 Bronco, in the Sunset paint trim... I met him at the LHS and he got his son a Latrax Teton, and his daughter a Latrax Prerunner (in the Hawaiian color-scheme, natch') along with his Traxxas, a Hitec charger, and a Venom LiPo.

He has an old Losi buggy, so he isn't brand new to RC - but it's been ages for him - and he is now a crawler convert!

Tried to get him into an Ascender, but he's a smart guy and had read up on all the features of the TRX-4 - he's a gearhead, has a Miata that he's turbocharged himself - so he liked the idea of lockable diffs, and shifting to 2nd gear, and all that.

It was great watching all of them unbox on the tailgate of his truck, right there in the LHS parking lot!

He lives a ways South from me - so it'll likely be next weekend before we go crawlin' together - but he texted me and the kids are blown away by the speed of the Latrax RCs and he went for a long walk-n-crawl around his neighborhood in the Bronco - had a BLAST!

I'm very happy to have helped bring more people to RC (his kids have only had total toy-grade RCs before, that's why the Latrax's were such a surprise) and ESPECIALLY happy to have a future crawlin' buddy...

nice! i love spreading this hobby. especially when we get the kiddos involved, ensures survival of the hobby for the next generation!
my son had Walmart RC's too. when he tried his grandpa's yeti... well he wasn't ready for that kind of speed, whisky throttled a huge boulder at full boil. yeti was fine but my wallet cried out in fear lol and he got a barrage with the throttle trim turned waaaay down haha
he does fine now. almost ready for a better (read: ascender) rig of his own ;)
***aaannnnnd i think i just found where adam savage got the idea...
https://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=272691&page=8
those guys at the RPF are AMAZING.

anyway back to the truck in question here...
not much of an update. still waiting for the molotow chrome to fully cure on the grill and bumper. i guess i should have realized its not acrylic. ironically i just stumbled across a youtube vid on adam savage's channel where he found a good clear coat for chrome paint that wont turn it grey. YIKES! good thing i didn't hit my grill with Tamiya clear!!! i think for now i will just carry the pen with me for trail touch ups. i have accepted the fact it could very well get destroyed at proline. but i can probably get a new one from RC nerds if its really bad.
now the only thing holding me up, is not having a dremel to fine-sand the lexan hole for the grill.
framing up some doors in my house this weekend, might "accidentally" buy a new dremel at home depot when we go for door supplies. ;)

after the grill gets put in, i need to get busy on some lights!
just gonna toss a 4" bar on my son's barrage. but my truck needs a custom made set, i think.
trying to find pre-fabbed kits with the right number, size, and color of LEDs has turned up bupkis.
so there is an electronics store near the home depot... you know where this is going lol
2x 5mm soft white
2x 3mm orange/amber
2x 3mm red
that's it. not doing the side trim lights this time around. but if i did, i would use 2 red and 2 amber SMD style.

might try to just run them on a 3.7v 18650 litium ion (vape battery) velcro'd inside the body so i don't have to worry about a connection between the body and chassis.
i don't need a ton of juice to run 6 lights, no controller since I'm not getting fancy with brake lights (yet?).
fronts will be cake since the RC Nerds grill is already set to go with 5 and 3mm holes.
rear i will probably use axial light buckets (the small oval shaped rock lights) glued behind the taillights with shoegoo.
no light bars on this ferd. trying to stay period correct. if in the future i really think it needs more light, maybe i will hide something inside the grill. even then, probably period correct KC Highlites or something to that effect.

sorry, no neat pictures this time :(

I wanted a similar high output but still stock looking light setup for my GCM Skeleton so I installed a couple of these 3W leds as headlights.

28504.jpg

I used a cheap prewired light set with head and taillights, replaced the plain 5mm leds with the high output ones wired in series and ran the whole thing off 6V from the receiver. The setup probably cost me less than $5 and only took 4 solder joints.

No lightbar is needed on this truck and you can't even tell it packs that much illumination power.

wow those are the type of LEDs i use to build lightsabers (another reason for my plethora of 18650 batts), and it never occurred to me those would make great headlights!
good old luxeon 3watt... thanks!

*and with 2x 3w luxeon, might need to run one of these suckers... I've used them before and its a great way to regulate! but i'd need more than a single 18650 to power that. (cant series 2 lithium-ion without a controller card) hmmmmm...

i might even still have one of these buckpucks laying around in my saber parts drawers!

Wow, very nice looking leds for headlights. "thumbsup"

Burning the midnight oil here...
Going to el cajon hobbies tomorrow for last minute supplies (2s lipos and maybe a light bar for andrews barrage) and stopping at the electronics store for those leds.

Meanwhile, im jamming to some lynyrd skynyrd while carefully finishing facial surgery...

Electronics store was worth squat! It was like electronic surplus. I asked for leds and he said down that isle. It was a shoebox more scattered than my workbench!
But i went to ec hobbies and got andrew a proline lightbar and 2x 2s batts at 2000mah. Thats literally all they had unless i wanted a 5000.

Slowly learning why online is killing brick and mortar....

Lightbar instal was easy just tapped into the power side of the esc with a servo connector for disconnect during daytime. Nothing fancy. I will have go follow him at night since my truck might not get lights in time. DOH!
** velcro'd his old nimh pack under the hood and soldered a deans male to connection for a self contained lighting system. no weird body-chassis umbilical!
with the factory barrage lights and the bar, its pretty neat looking. drove it a bit in my backyard in the dark, as my first lighted crawler it sure adds to the experience! Andrew is pretty stoked too ;)
