Tribute to my Dad's 79 F100 featuring Banzai

okay that pic above reminds me of a Mitch Hedberg joke. something to the effect of "the picture of bigfoot isn't blurry, bigfoot IS blurry! ah run! there is a scary out of focus monster on the loose!" RIP, Mitch...
*heh found the clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMm1YTd8lHM

anyway yeah so 79 ferd things...
servo is shot but i haven't cracked it open to observe the carnage. ESC was removed and donated to my son's ascender. errmmmm what do?

looking at servos.
there is a waterproof savox on RPP for under $40. and there is a waterproof "power HD" on amazon for just over $30. its literally a $5 difference. trust the savox name, or is it hype? save $5 i would have spent on a cheeseburger or servo horn?
opinions welcome.

ESC. well, that's a no-brainer. hobbywing to the rescue!!!! question is, amazon has it with the program card. its on RPP for the same price, but no mention of the program card. can anyone confirm?

looking to get these ordered ASAP, my son is chomping at the bit to get his new rig dirty!!!

I have never been impressed with the low end Savox servos so I stay away from pretty much any Savox under $70. You get specs and durability on par with plenty of $20-25 no-name servos for twice the price. My Power HD 20KG waterproof died spontaneously on me (lost the ability to turn left after a couple runs, then lost the ability to center) so I didn't get to test it long term. People seem to like these JX servos but I haven't ran one:

Although not waterproof, the Tower Pro 958 is a great cheap servo. They have been used on a few of my trucks with great success and they are hard to beat for $11.

Pretty sure they all come with programming cards. I wish there was a version without a card for a couple bucks less since I have 2 cards already.

I would also stay away from the cheaper waterproof servos. (side note I dont look for waterproof servos anymore, they're all too weak from what I've seen in the past)

I noticed Amain just released a pretty powerful waterproof servo https://www.amainhobbies.com/ecopow...que-metal-gear-digital-servo-ecp-120t/p734714
its much stronger than most waterproof ones, but its too new to know much else, but the price is reasonable.

Good advice guys! Unless your planning on submerging your truck, waterproof servos are not needed. Sorry I popped the cap on the ESC I had in Andrews truck:roll::roll: he could have already been running it.

Ernie

I've now had three bad experiences with low end Savox servos, two waterproof (0231) and one not (not sure of model #). Soured me on the brand.

Is the HW 1080 cheaper on RPP than Amazon? Seems unlikely. But I suppose in SoCal you probably get stuff from RPP in about an hour, right?

Agree on that point.

The only waterproof servo that I have put to the test and had it survive was the Xpert 7701. My Ascender was full waterproof when I first built it and that thing got submarined so many times but the Xpert servo is still running over 2 years later. I don't trust many waterproof servos as any more than water resistant.

Fun fact: 2.4ghz signals don't penetrate water all that well and it isn't fun when your receiver goes into failsafe while the truck is underwater in the middle of a stream.

hmm thanks for the advice on the servos. as for savox i could drop a little more coin but not much.
i kinda refrain from the JX stuff since they pretty much ripped off Holmes' design. but that price... soooo tempting...

thanks for confirming the programming card!

** WOW lots more advice since i went downstairs!
thanks and now I'm really leaning towards NOT waterproof (we in CA deserts don't have much water around anyway lol but it might be nice on the occasional winter trip to big bear).
and yeah the HW1080 is the same price on amazon and rpp. and yes i think i got an RPP order in like 10 minutes once LOL
Casey thanks for the link to the ecopower. and now i know AMAIN works on my gov pc! it didn't before but i guess they finally lifted the tin foil hat long enough to realize its not gambling or pr0n.

Ernie don't worry about the ESC! i think i can deal with that considering everything else ;)

i have been reading the "new hotness" servo thread but there is a LOT of different stuff there its hard to keep up.

All the Hobbywing ESCs that I've bought have come with the card and Hobbywing direct states as such. RPP Hobby shipping and service is top notch, always support them over Amazon when I can, all Amazon cares about is your money. I also skip all the waterproof servos, too low power, over-priced, meh. You can waterproof yourself if need be, otherwise they usually do fine as long as not submerging. Tower Pro servo would be my budget servo to try, seen so many others just up and quit...good servo thread. :ror::)

.....DS3218 servo at $18.10 survived 100deg heat, and getting jammed in some serious binds, in much larger rocks than those I've driven in before - same terrain that destroyed my pal's TRX-4 servo.

I seriously doubt I will ever buy a different servo for any 1.9" or smaller-tired rig in the future.

Even listed as waterproof, though I don't drive "wet".

If you happened to destroy one, at the incredibly low price point it's hardly a painful experience!

It surely seems like my 'cheapo' savox 0231 is far superior to the new DS3215's I have, but maybe not. The DS's just don't seem like they have that much power. OTOH, $32 seems just a hair on the high side for what it is. I really like the one I put in my wrangler build, works great.

HW comes with the programmer card. RPP is always going to be faster than Amazon unless you have prime. I refuse to pay to shop anywhere. Well, I finally got a costco card again after a dozen years, but gee, it gripes the hell out of me. Guess where the money comes from to stock their store?? That's right - the membership fees. And they make you buy twice as much as you need/want. But I digress...
If I really need a 'prime' item I use my kid's account.

Again, I have the stock dynamite esc out of my RTR truck I'm happy to donate - I'll never use it - I understand the value of the upgraded esc now.

Browneye - can you do me a favor and check the exact part number on your DS servo?

The DS 3218 has a listed spec of "Stall Torque (5V): 19 kg/cm (263.8oz/in) Stall Torque (6.8V): 21.5 kg/cm (298.5 oz/in)"

However, if you are using a different part number such as DS 3215, it may well be specced lower in torque.

When I search for DS 3215, I get no accurate servo results...

I'm just curious if perhaps we have a typo here?

i' have been ready to pull the trigger for 3 days now and keep getting more options and opportunities lol

i was about to check out and my "fun money" account card didn't work on amazon (just the servo) so i didn't try it on RPP (HW 1080 and some other goodies).

now the ebay coupon code has hit so i need to see if i can get multiple things for a total of $50 (doubt it), or if its only for one $50 item.
i would hate to over pay on a servo just to use the coupon code.
and yes i use my wife's prime account lol and we have Costco VIP or whatever that pays for the membership with the points we get. cant lose there!

THERE IS A GCM CMAX STARTER FRAME ON EBAY!!!!!! *rubs hands together and cackles like a villain*
**meh, nevermind. even with the coupon its only $2 cheaper than getting it straight from GCM.

the search continues...
*** coupon code works for your TOTAL! tossed a DS3218 and a HW1080 in the cart and its only $50! *immediately goes HAM*

Those are the specs I got from the item listing on aliexpress here:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1X-...663.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.2ea64c4dMzV15u

I just see that the Savox 0231 is rated for about 168oz/in but doesn't stall out in difficult terrain like the DS3215 does. So I dunno, I don't put a lot of stock in those specs, especially stuff out of china.

I've seen a lot of panning of the cheapo savox, but my experience has been really good with it. Especially at 7.4 volts on the HW onboard BEC.

I have two more of the DS3215's coming from AliExpress. I'll use them 'till I find something better. $100 steering servos just aren't in my realm.

Ummm... Browneye - those are DS3218 servos, not DS 3215. "thumbsup"

That's what I was checking - to make sure we were all talking about the same part. ;-)

(thanks for posting the link to clarify)

So now that we're done comparing apples to apples haha

I bought an Apple! Err... Ds3218! And a hobbywing 1080!
And with the ebay code I even threw in 2 pairs of rc4wd 6ton Jack stands.

Actually touched a tool to the 79 full bed tonight for the first time since I got home from proline. So much focus on Andrews new truck, the old gal has just been sitting there all lonely. She lost a rear lower shock bolt at the very last 5 minutes of proline. Replaced that to get her back on all 4 feet again.
Shes tired. She fought hard keeping her own agaonst rigs with tires twice as big as hers. And she did damn good.

I havent heard from pawel at rc nerds for a while. Need to order replacement lenses. Fix all the scratches on the chrome. Amd then... Well... I'm really not sure. Keep driving her as long as I can! She doesnt know how to quit!

Ford tough.

*oh! Almost got rick to bite on the ascender today with the coupon code. He is really eyeballing the BND. Just... Not today. Rest assured though whatever he ends up with I will get him on this forum.

ASCENDERS ASSEMBLE!!!!

Oops - what's the difference between them?
