how did you get the paint to stick to it?

my dad was telling me once that he stripped the hood on his old car with brake fluid and no amount of sanding, cleaning, grease remover, nothing...would make the new paint stick.....

First, I used old nasty brake fluid that had absorbed a ton of water already. Then I washed it with Dawn and hot water, let it air-dry and primed. I'll hit it with the good primer tomorrow after work, this was just the tail end of the cheap stuff, but the cheap stuff sticks to anything  The good stuff is sandable and has a better surface.

And John, I only had about 3 hours to spend on it today. Wish I had more.

oops...

forgot I was shooting lacquer. It's dry by the time it hits the body. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful

Still needs a little touching up around the boundary (you can see a little primer showing where the paint lifted on the front fender and a couple small bleeds) but overall I'm pretty happy with it. Half an hour with a fine brush and she'll be right.

Don't mind the body height, the front end is sitting on the receiver.

More Progress...

Got a little more done. The grille and tailgate are on, lights are wired (still haven't tested the ancient nicad pack that came with the bodies, I'll be really surprised if it still holds a charge but you never know) and finished off the rear suspension.

Now all it needs is body mounts, some guts in the tranny and a battery mount and she'll be ready to roll. I'm thinking screws through the rocker panels for body mounting; should be the cleanest way to do it, and I can access the battery plug from underneath so the body can stay on 99% of the time anyway.

Aaaaannndd.... Done!

Well, except for a driveshaft. I only had male sliders, so it's front-wheel drive til tomorrow, but it's buttoned up enough to drive around and call it done. The lights work, the old nicad works for about a minute and then takes a dump  so I run the lights on Duracells.

With all the aluminum, this is one noisy rig, sounds like a garbage can rolling down a hill, but it's fun to drive. Mounting the body is kind of a PITA, but the button-head screws are nearly invisible. I might paint the ones on the hood red.

Throw another pack of sliders at it and I can put the DONE stamp on it.

Stu,

That's a really nice buildup! Put another feather in your cap for this one. I like it almost as much as the Mini Cooper or VW Beetle on Scale4x4.
Great job!

Well, it's set up as a street truck, so there's not a whole lot of flex. What flex there is, is eaten up by the spacers used to locate the axle (the driver's side axle hits the pivot before it hits the bump stop) BUT, it keeps the dogbone from coming out so the limited artic isn't all bad.

I haven't driven it with the body on yet, or with the rear drive hooked up, since I ran out of sliders. But the initial test drive went well, aside from all the damn noise. It's speedy (18/54 gears) and the laydown trans keeps the CG pretty low, even with the battery on top of the frame. Using small tires helps a lot there. It handles quite well, some body roll but not so tippy you're afraid to gas it. I'm looking forward to some more wheel time, but that first scratch is going to make me cry like a little schoolgirl

Another Great build, BUT I am still awaiting the Mog project, that is my favorite!
