The Styrene Challenge - #1 - Toolbox

one quick ? before I decide to build one in a couple of days. rules say no metal, but could I use "BareMetalFoil" for the trim on my toolbox? it would be used to accent the drawer edges instead of paint. thnks in advance, either way.

Nope, sorry, not for this challenge.

I decided to build a job box like we had in the truck when I was younger working construction.

Here's the start of it, I had to build it in the house as it was too hot in the garage. My chick didn't appreciate it too much.

Got it primed, and added a little salt to the wet paint to get a weathered look later

Cutting out the logo

After rubbing the salt off and exposing the primer underneath, I started adding the powders to get a rusted effect.

Sorry for so many pics.

Fantastic work sideweeler"thumbsup" No need to apologize for all the pics, as I am sure its a huge help to many, including myself!

ok, well, i'm gonna give this a shot. might not make it in on time, but an effort none the less.

here's a pic of materials and all of the tools that I will be using. the materials will consist of .040"/1mm thick sheet styrene (black) and .020"/.5mmx.080"/2mm strip styrene (white). the tools of choice for this build are a 12' ruler, hobby knife w/#11 blade, an ambroid pro weld- plasti weld. (scissors are there for support):lmao:

*Note* there is no putty or sanding tools pictured or listed. they will not be used nor needed in the build of my box.

I did however, get a lil bit of time to start on this project yesterday evening before I had to be at work. got most of all of the major pieces cut.

i'm gonna attempt to build a roll cabinet w/top chest. will be about a 5' scale cabinet.

I started by laying out my 2 front face plates, and getting them cut out. all my cuts will be made using the ruler as a straight edge, and scoring the styrene w/the hobby knife, and then just "snap it" apart. sorta like cutting glass. this method gives you nice crisp edges.

I then cut some pieces to put behind these face plates. this will give it depth and look more realistic.

Off to a great start"thumbsup"

would like to start off by saying thnks, for all the likes fellas. I worked a lil bit on the box this morning after work.

i first measured and cut the white styrene strips to length, which will be the drawer edges/pulls.

then of course, i got them attached to the face plates with the pro-weld.

Nice work to everyone and FATBOYrs10 it looks to me like you'll get er done in time to me!

thnks JBailey. well, I've been thrashing some the past hour, in between trying to keep progress posted and final assembly of my box to get it as close to done before i have to go to work today. because honestly, i'll have to be done with it a few hours before the deadline, as so i can get a pic of the finished box posted before i head to work.

anyway, here's a pic of th boxes themselves completely assembled.

i also took a quick few minutes to cut/make some somewhat ok handles for both boxes.

my biggest worry with not being able to complete this project is paint. i have a plan though, i just hope that a couple coats of high gloss lacquer clear will be considered paint:ror:. i do however have a lil detail trick that i'll reveal tomorrow with the final pic.

i do still have to make some casters for it. hopefully that will be the only thing left, and i can knock them out in the morning after work.

with that said, i think i'm gonna head to the shop to spray some clear, as so it'll be good and dry for in the morning. thnks for looking "thumbsup"
