While I'm waiting for the kit to arrive, does anyone know the smallest pinion you can use?

I send a msg to element rc what pinion they recommed in may case for a motor 45t and they say 18t

Also - just being weird - I added up the cost of all the "hard" plastic replacement parts and ended up around $98... that includes axle housings.

(that two-tone painted Sendero body looks a million times better than the gray - but I still would trim the leading and trailing edges of all 4 fenders if it were mine - gonna snag on everything)

Whats a good way to add some front axle weight?

SCX10.2 weighted knuckles would be a quick way to add a fair amount of weight but you would have to give up the behind the axle link. I'm gonna wait it out in hopes that somebody makes weighted knuckles that allow us to keep the BTA steering.

Some pics of Rodney’s enduro, from battleborn rc paint. Another friend and I really stretched the legs on his, got it to pull some nice lines and check its limits. Pretty impressive out of the box, hope to have a video together later.

Sweet paint job! What front bumper is on the truck? Did it make a difference?

He has the original scx10 dingo bumper with little trimming on there. Definitely helped the approach.

If the wheels are slw hub compatible then won't the SSD wheel hub weights work? I have no problem running a heavy wheel hub, they work fine on my trucks. We don't do any high-speed running with them.
I have a set on another rig, think I'll try them. I checked all the axle nuts on mine, all got a click or two tighter.

From what I’ve gathered they are slw compatible but the holes on the wheels need to be drilled out a tad to fit the VP hardware for the VP hubs.

Since ssd uses more common hardware, my assumption is they would work but that’s not confirmed.

With 14T pinion...ideal for 3S. I doubt there's room in the motor-mounting slots to move it over enough for a 13, but maybe, and maybe with some filing to the slots. In any case, it's evident the design was made for 2s power as all of the gearing options are for even taller gears. It's already way too fast for rock crawling with 3S. A 14T pinion really tames it down to something reasonable. Reverse is still ridiculous so I'm just ordering out a HW1080 where you can set reverse speed to 25%, 50%, or 100%.

Wouldn't be surprised to file the motor mount slots out about for smaller pinion.

I think some of the issue with speed / gearing is that none of us are used to 16-turn motors in our crawlers. I've got pretty satisfactory slow speed control with stock motor and gearing by putting -75% throttle expo.

Matter of fact, final gear rations are identical to a 3-gear scx10 II...

30T/8T in the axles, identical to an SCX10
20T/28T/52T in the front half gearbox, identical to an SCX10...

16 turn on a 5 slot is like 30ish on a 4 slot.
its largely due to the gearing on 3S that its so fast. i would bet dollars to donuts if you dropped in a 30 turn 4 slot motor and changed nothing else, it would be just about the same.

I don't know if this is relevant at all to the reverse speed issues, but you guys know I haven't run the stock ESC and radio.

When I put in my HW 1080 and FlySky system in, I noticed reverse was much faster than forward, so I swapped the motor leads and put my throttle into servo reverse. Now my forward is faster than reverse, and my crawling in the video was run that way with expo and HW1080 adjustments on 3S.

Reverse is just touchy because the radio is 70/30 throttle throw and the ESC doesn't have an expo throttle.

sounds like the best solution to a lot of it, coupled with a 14t pinion it should be PERFECT.

Alright, the play I was talking about earlier with the steering... I thought it was the servo horn, but it's not. There is actually play with the servo shaft itself. I can wiggle it back and forth, whereas my other servos are pretty solid. Not sure if this happened during running, or if it was like that already.

I guess I can take a video of it and put it up here when I get the chance. If anyone else who has the truck already can check, that'd be great. I'll be swapping the servo anyway, but it'd be nice to have that 13kg handy for other stuff/applications.


EDIT: With the servo off the truck, it has a little play, but it's not too bad. I'll give it a run with the new servo and metal servo horn. Figure out if it's just characteristics of the BTA setup.

My servo had a ton of play in the shaft as well. I replaced it with an amazon 25kg one... although even that one has a little bit of play as well.
