Recently bought a bomber kit off a member here. Looking forward to the build. I love building kits. I am not looking to spend tons of cash nor build some top of the line rig. Mainly trail running and some rock crawling. I have been in rc for many years and crawling since the ax10 kit came out so I'm not a noob but I also have a limited budget being a single dad. I'm sure some of you understand where I'm coming from. Of course I would love to deck it out in all the greatest stuff but I dont have the cash and I'm not looking to do anything crazy with this but have some fun.

I guess first question is are there any big weak spots of the kit I should look at replacing. Obviously I will upgrade some parts like c hubs and knuckles and driveshafts eventually. Probably the rear trailing arms too but plan on running all these parts for a bit.

Second question involving electronics
Eventually probably a HH trailmaster pro brushless motor but thinking about starting with the hh 550 21t trailmaster brushed motor and a hw 1080 esc. Anyone run that combo in bomber on 3s and or 2s. Figured cheap startup combo that I can use or keep for backups for mine or my sons scx10 when/if I go brushless down the road in the bomber. Any issues with the 1080 handling 550 motors on 3s? I have a 1080 in my sons rig but only a 540 45t motor. I have been impressed with that esc and it's super cheap.

What kind of grease is everyone liking for ring and pinion as well as tranny gears. Over the years I have used Lucas oil red n tacky in these areas on scx10s because it's cheap and I can get it at local stores. Huge container for cheap. It also works great at keeping water out of axles and gears. Just wondered if anyone had any other suggestions or is grease pretty much grease haha.

Thanks for any help or suggestions

I'm running 550 21T on 3s, 11T pinion.
Never had any heat issues or lack of power.
I run mostly trails and flat land full throttle.

I'm not looking to break speed records but does it have decent wheel speed. Thanks so much for reply. What esc do you run?

Hobbywing 1080, I started a settings thread where we compile many different profiles to help people with tuning.

The 550 21T isn't fast, it's about a 2200kv brushless which is slow.

I searched and couldn't find it... I'll try again later, I need to get the kid to the park...

I'm running a hobbywing wp1080 brushed esc and Holmes hobbies 21t motor with a skeptum dx5c. Pretty happy with the setup. I've only run it on 2s now. Haven't had a chance to run on 3s. I have no complaints with it

I just tried out a 21T HH Trailmaster motor with a crummy Axial RTR ESC and I thought the motor had a ton of wheel speed (using the 13T pinion), I prefer a lower to mid wheelspeed setup though. I'm also new too the Bomber so maybe they just gear them high? I already put the lowest ratio pinion and spur I could on it and swapped motors and ESCs.

But I'd say that motor is a good fit for the Bomber especial when paired with a good ESC like one from Holmes, Castle or the 1080.

Great thanks for input. I'm gonna go with that motor esc combo

Volt up, gear down.
I'm using 3s with a 11T pinion.
Stock pinion is 12T so if you are using 13T, that's why it faster.

My Bomber kit hardware was all stock until very recently. The only issues that I ran into were weak rod ends on the lower front links, and the rear trailing arms flexing forward of the metal braces. I would skip the Axial plastic rod ends entirely and use Jato ends cut down to the right length. The trailing arms will hold up for a while, but eventually they will fatigue and start flexing.

Yeah get some rpm Revo rod ends ASAP...
Plus real sealed bearings (fast eddy or avid).

Which rod ends exactly will not change link lengths. Or do I need to trim rod ends no matter what I use

Are the bearings really that bad? I dont plan on submerging this thing in anything crazy

I'm using the Vanquish rpm Revo rod ends that come with brass pivot balls.
I had to add a little SSD m4 spacer on each rod end to keep the stock width.

Revo rod ends are shorter than the Axial rod ends, so you'll need spacers or deal with the front edge of the links getting caught on everything. Jato ends are too long, but are easy to cut to the desired length.

I use the brass balls from Vanquish. They are the same width as axial plastic balls.
The stainless balls or aluminum balls are often a little less wide so there is slop in the links over time
do you use the standard traxxas pivot balls with these ends?

It may depend on where they're mounted. Most of the axial mounts are flexible plastic and when you tighten the screw they suck in just fine. If you're running aftermarket aluminum mounts, you may need a shim or two with the Traxxas balls.
