SCX10-III: Things to know before you build yours (Tips)

Ok, another stupid question...so no where does it tell me how to build the shocks, as in how much oil to add and how to bleed so I built them as I did with my buggy. But that's not the question...the manual shows, center eyelet to center eyelet to be 97mm. Is that correct or a typo? Mine is currently at 91mm and some change, from center of eyelet to center of eyelet. Now if I measure from edge to edge, it'll be 99.3mm. If I try to extend the bottom eyelet, it would be barely connected. Did I do something wrong, is it a typo, or am I an idiot? By me, I mean my wife since this is her kit and she's building it but I'll take the heat for it...

Basically they should be built in this order:

- Using 2 C rings attach the damper to the shaft

- Slide shaft (threaded end first) into shock body and through bottom

- Lube orings and install rubber white | black washer | rubber white onto the threaded end of shock. Slide them up into the bottom of the shock body

- Screw bottom cap on to keep orings in place

- Lube oring for shock top cap and place in cap

- Fill shock body up to the top

- Screw on top shock cap

- Unscrew bleeder in the top shock cap

- Compress shock completely and keep it compressed

- When you compress shock oil will leak out top of cap, with fully compressed shock put bleeder screw back in cap

- Install your spring etc....
 
Correct. That's how I build my buggy shocks and that's how i built these. But the lengths have me at a loss...

The manual has other typos and this may be one of them that has yet to be pointed out. I don't know if I have seen anyone measure them in their build threads as I never did mine.

The shocks however are 90mm shocks so I am going to go with another typo in the manual. Who makes a 97mm shock? LOL
 
I think the 97mm might be from edge to edge, after assembly, maybe? I dunno. But whew. Glad to know I wasn't just over-thinking. hhaha!

I measre my TC and buggies since those need to be precise (most of the time) so I carried that over with this build.

So if it's a typo, how long do they actually need to be, from edge to edge? I installed my bottom eyelet just right up to the last thread and that would make mine about 99mm-ish.

Glad you brought this up, I built my my shock exactly the way you did. As far as shock length I built one that was 97mm center to center. and it didn’t look right so I went with 93mm. Gives plenty of length and the shock shaft is threaded into the rod end. I will have to test it out and see if it gives me any problems.

Shock oil, what weight comes in the kit? 2 tubes come with the kit and are not labeled, are they different weights front rear? I would assume yes. When I built mine I just used 1 of the tubes fir all 4 shocks. Still not sure the weight I used. Lol. They feel ok

My kit came with 2 tubes of 35wt, both labeled as such. I used the kit springs and filled all four shocks with 50wt and that is working nicely for me.

As to the measurements I have never measured. I have always just screwed the rod end on until there were no more threads. I just build each shock the same and install them.

Maybe somebody will chime in and state that this can cause X issue and I should do X to make it better. I am all for learning something new. :)

This is exactly what I do. It let it ride where it rides. As long as everything is same, same, roll with it.



RC Crawlers are very much like my other hobbies, Fly fishing, golf, FPV drones... They all are the marriage of art and science. There are a lot of things that math and physics make sense but sometimes you gotta just go with what feels right.


Be the scientist, but let the surfer have a little fun too ;-)

One more thing...wife is working on the tranny and it's built but we noticed we have an extra bearing. Did anyone else have an extra bearing ( AXA1218 )? I'm thinking bag C...

EDIT: Found where she missed the screw but still have an extra bearing...
EDIT: Tearing the tranny apart and rebuilding...will let you guys know what we find...

I built my transmission 3 times before I accepted that I had 4 bearings in the bag instead of the needed three.

I thought I had an extra bearing when I built mine. Turns out I left one out of the front axle. I couldn't believe there was an extra one so I kept tearing the transmission and axles apart till I found it. I probably took it apart 3 times before finding out where it went.
 
Ok, so after tearing down the tranny the first time, she found she was missing a bearing. Tore it down ANOTHER time and everything was accounted for. Woohoo! I had to sit with her and mark the pieces off as we went. But I know after this, she won’t need the manual to rebuild the tranny ever again! Hahah!

Buy the option 1:7 gear reduction set for the transmission and tell her to install it once the build is done! :lmao:
 
Did anyone trim the edges on the stock foams that came with the tires? I did and it seemed to help with traction.
 
So another question...this time battery...I have a few LCG being used by my TC and a few shorty packs for my buggy. Now is there a reason to use one over the other considering we have mounts for both types? Assuming both have the same mAh and C-rating. I’m coming from TC/buggy where we don’t want any weight but with crawling, I know we want a lot of weight but down low like on axles it hubs so I know we wouldn’t want a fatty 3S but a modest 5000mAh 2S battery, installing the batter at the rear position, would a smaller shorty be the better option?
