Pinion play

Hi,
I noticed that the AR60 differential pinions (axles not the motor/transmission) on my RR10 are very sloppy - read a few old posts found on a Google search about shims to cure this.

Have any of you shimmed up the pinion to resolve this?
If yes any recommendations on where to buy shims?

thanks!

Kit or RTR? Kit comes with hd gear sets for the diffs. I haven't noticed any play in mine.

My kit gears had some play on the pinions. I purchased AR60 shim kits from Locked up RC and I think I used 2 shims per pinion.
One inside and one outside the axle housing.
I explained it with pictures in my build thread.

Brake Weight - "differential pinions" on the AR60 axles.

xfritznewton - RTR

JBoucher - many thanks, think I'll buy a set of HD ring/pinions and some shims.

are the gears slipping
i would look at the bearings the inner bearing like to explode the 11x5x4 wont take the side loads put on them by the ring gear the 13x5x4 is a good upgrade you do need to open up the bearing pocket or but one already done already

the shims help as long as your bearings are good but not realy needed i have some thrust bearings that are slooply as all get out but im not getting any grinding so i just let them ride all loose and stuff my theory is when its under load theres no play

what ever you do buy extra bearings cause if its not your problem now it will be some day

Gave the Bomber an inspection last night, seems what I thought was excessive play was mainly due to the axle end CVs being a bit loose. The pinions do have some play but not excessive - yet.

Good to know there are solutions for this.

BrakeWeight - only a 2S NiMh and stock motor with two-speed.
I did experiment with a 21T but it lacks low-end torque so I've reverted to the 35T motor.

A 21T 550 motor?
It should have the of a 27T 540 with a lot more torque.
Grab a trailmaster sport and a Hobbywing 1080 and go for 3s LiPo.
That will wake up the beast!

Any good Short Course combo will bring out the beast, too.
