Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

Can you guys give any suggestions for pads for the Avid Elixr1 brakes on my MTB? I have been killing these pretty damn quickly. Also, any tips on how to know when they are shot?

Avid metallic pads stop better when wet, make less noise and last longer....your disks will wear quicker, but they are replaceable.

Cool! Thanks for the help. "thumbsup"

BTW, for those of you reading, REI is having a pretty good sale right now. Here is the code: ANNV2014

I just caught this...it was meant as a compliment "thumbsup"

Not sure if it's still this way, but Mountain Bikers used to always wear black, and Roadies wore white. Your socks show that that you are a Mountain Biker on a road bike "thumbsup"

Sintered metallic pads? That's all I got. Metallic pads last longer and provide stronger braking with less finger pull but are noisier when they rub. Organic and semi metallic pads are supposed to be quieter, but don't last as long and require more power at the lever to get the same braking power as full metallic pads.

I found this and should have possession of it in 2 weeks or so....2010 GT Avalanche 2.0 disc

Definitely metallic pads .. And depending on how aggressive you ride get Hayes strokers instead ... Avid get hot quick and are spongey .... Also try being more confident and using breaks less... Get comfortable drifting the bike a bit it works wonders ....

Do I spot an evil faction back there?"thumbsup"

The shop I work for hosted a Specialized Bikes mountain demo last week. A whole truck full of sweet bikes came out to our local trails...mostly carbon full suspensions and S-Works bikes. I finally took a spin on a 29er that I didn't hate...a Stumpjumper carbon evo, and got to ride their new 650b carbon Stumpjumper. Once they refine the 650b a bit, I'm pretty sure I'll be a convert. The 29er was a fast bike and very smooth, although it felt a bit sluggish on some of the tight corners we have at our local trails.

Action shot on the 29er:

She's a Keeper thumbsup "thumbsup"

Nice action shot, looks like a sweet trail. Next time try sticking your tongue out, it will help you when swinging those wide (stock) bars & 29" wheels. :ror:

I have to look into this 650 specky you speak of...

Yes, sweet trail, bikes.....and those bars do need trimmed down to fit the rider. "thumbsup"

Walked out back earlier and found out I need to get yet another tube for my single speed. I hate bull thorns!

Yes.

Are they anything like Goat Heads?

Same thing as far as I know...they really suck!

Aha, I wasn't aware of that actually. "thumbsup"

Gonna run by the LBS today for some more shorts / jerseys.

I've been in Atlanta helping my little sister move the past four days, carrying crap up and down three stories, got home late last night. I really thought about wussing out of the weekly group ride, but decided to go last minute. I struggled on the out lap, and got dropped by most of the group, almost got bit by a dog, and even fumbled my water bottle and had to stop and pick it up. I even thought about just turning around, I was miserable truth be told. But, the legs finally loosened up and I stayed with most of the group coming back. I'm glad I didn't quit, and I was actually enjoying it by the return lap. Off day tomorrow, then a new loop on Thursday.

This is great "thumbsup".
I hate turning bricks or having lead legs, sometimes those first laps are a test of your will... you beat the demon, good job.

I use every trick in the books to get my legs ready for, or recovered from riding. Research Leg drains as a start, it's an old runners wives tale also. I've had great results with light stretching say 20-30 min before my rides.

Do you have a hear rate monitor? That's a fun graph to look at after a group ride.

I did a 30 mile ride tonight and got treated to this in the closing miles.

That's a great shot, and a nice treat on a ride!

Yeah, it was sort of a how much suffering can I push through kind of thing since I'm planning some much longer rides leading up to the Fall Classic. I don't think there's anyone in this thread that will lie to you and say that you never suffer on the seat of a bike, and that it's all just fun.

I do have an HRM actually, and just bought Strava pro so I'm going to start using it Tomorrow if the weather holds for us. I'll try the leg drains also, sounds interesting, thanks for the tip!
