Not sure about the gen 7 pro

Picked up a gen 7 pro, took all the unnecessary weight off of it and ran it around the back yard. First issue the cv axles failed, got aftermarket replacements. Next the transmission gears stripped, replaced with metal ones, next the esc and the motor failed, order is placed for a new ones. For the money I tried to save I’ve already bought the trx 4 I was interested in.....that’s it in a nutshell. I bought my wife the gen8 for Xmas and now I’m not sure that was a good idea.....

The Gen8 is way better than the Gen7. Hopefully you got the V2 version (purple or green body) or the Axe edition. Those are very solid trucks.

A group of retired guys showed up to a scale comp a couple years ago with gen 8s. I watched one lose a portal gear, axle shaft and ring & pinion on the front end. While he autopsied the carnage between classes I was bashing about with my trx4 on 4s brushless power beating it unmerciful. All the old guys showed up to the next comp with either trx4s or scx10.2s. they left the red cat junk at home.

Yeah I got the v2 purple one. I’ve looked at the axe edition several times but I think the trx is better quality wise. Idk, just throwing money away with this 7.

Yeah pretty sure I’m gunna give the 7 to my 7 yo so she can destroy it lol

My 12yo kid has a Gen7 Sport and all he has broken is the plastic transmission gears.

TRX-4 and especially the Sport needs upgrades too, I had one and I sold it when I realised how much it needs upgrades.
Bought SCX10 II 1969 Blazer and 1955 F-100, they seem to be above TRX-4 in quality and they are cheaper too.

Trx4 upgrades? I've changed the shocks only because I wanted the stock shocks on another rig. Otherwise all I've done is put a brushless setup and a cheap servo in it and beat the tar out of it with 2.2's. I just replaced the first stock part out of necessity, the slipper got loose and melted the center of the spur gear. $3.50 and 15 minutes and its back on the beating path.

:lmao:

Stock for stock an SCX10 II is not near the quality or durability of a TRX-4.

Everything I’ve watched and read so far agrees with that. I looked at the 10 III as well but there is tons of stuff I’m not interested in, scale engine, transmission, etc I don’t feel like paying for stuff like that.

Just an FYI, the electronics that come with the Traxxas trx4 aren't much, if any, more reliable than the Redcat basic electronics. Most rtrs come with very basic barely adequate electronics. It's one of the many reasons I recommend kits over rtrs.

Yeah i know thats the case but a lot less plastic parts and tons of after market options as far as upgrades. The gen 7 pro is pretty much all plastic or just parts that arent durable. With the money ive spent just keeping the tires turing i could have started out with somthing much better. Hope the gen 8 v2 works out for the wife, i havent opened the box yet. I was looking at the axe but im a little gun shy at this point. Money better spent elsewhere would be better in my first redcat experiance.

At some point in time redcat change there plastic to a extremely brittle mix but they fixed that issue my old everest 10 is still bulletproof but I bought the gen7 front axle for a different project and the plastic axle housing broke before I got it installed on the rig and the CVs snapped too on flat ground the e10has 4 years of abuse with not 1 factory part failure in fact I switched the redcat axles to a different rig and only opened the axle to steel a part for the new axle lol the everest 10 and the gen7 have basicly the same axles
My gen8 is a tank sure the portal gears failed but once I did the shaft mods no more failures I think its worth noting that both axial and traxxass have portal gear issus also so its not just redcat and redcat fixed most of the problems they had with the gen8 and they don't seem to be breaking anymore
The only real downside to the gen8 is the lack of good aftermarket parts the gen7 can be upgraded with axial parts with a little work
Traxxass and axial have a huge aftermarket following so the potential is limitless and the gen7 is just a scx10 clone so most og scx10 parts can be made to fit most people end up with all axial parts after a while on there gen7s

There is a amazing thread about the everest 10 and having the same axles as the gen7 there will be a lot of information that will carry over to the gen7

So your gen 8 was a tank, whats your opinion on the axe vrs a trx 4? Was your gen 8 a v2?

Former Gen8 owner here. The only thing I didn't like about the Cat was the weak plastic. I've owned several Cats ever since they came on the seen. I'd still own the Cats today if the plastic was a little more durable. I though about trying the Wendigo but I spent the money scratch building my last 3 rigs.
1 main draw back for the Cat in my area; parts support.
