LOSI RZR REY $399

I bought one "used" not too long ago from someone that used it as a show/talking piece for an ORV park; it was used in a way that it was probably driven on the parking lot to get people to come to their booth. I figured for $300 with 2 sets of new 2s 5000 mAh batteries, I couldn't go wrong.

I missed the opportunity with the Yeti Jr., which was supposedly a 1/18th scale, but if you scaled a Can Am SxS, that rig was closer to 1/10th. This time around, I wanted to make sure I had one even if it does remain mostly a shelf queen. It's really closer to 1/6th scale if you were to scale it to the full size Polaris RZR. While it looks a downright large compared to even a Traxxas UDR, it looks absolutely the correct size next to a 1/6th Super Baja Rey.

Just like the real thing, the CoG is high and it will traction roll even on dirt if you drive it like an RC car. Plenty fast on even 2s, and the suspension and body movement through the rough stuff is pleasingly scale.

I can confirm the real 1:1 Polaris RZRs like to traction roll, even in dirt. Many years ago I got to drive a bunch of these as part of a new product launch. I had the RZR up on two wheels several times and was passenger when my co-worker put it on its side.

It's not as bad as the utility side x sides (which were constantly in their sides that day) but still easy to roll.

Sounds like the same time people started discovering those off-road golf karts didn't come with roll cages. Those factory-installed roof frames weren't structural.

Luckily nobody ended up completely on their roof. Cages on all of them were structural enough to not fold over just going on their side.

We also luckily all new that they weren't really that safe and wore helmets and kept our hands and arms inside and no injuries.

But what else would you expect from a bunch of suspension company engineers. Pushing performance limits is why you do that job.

The fact the chassis is well covered and doesn't collect dirt and crap is a nice feature. It does look like a lot of fun to drive and only seems to need a servo upgrade from what i was reading.
 
Sweet! What an underrated rig!! I think the original listing price scared a lot of people away and the fact it really doesn't fit into a category. Just an overall fun RC!
 
Over the weekend, I picked up the original Baja Rey 1.0, the sliver Ford Raptor with the Black Rhino Wheels livery. Out of the box, in comparison to the RZR Rey, it is more softly sprung, which is good for scale type of suspension movement, bad for weight transfer on the track. The Baja Rey 1.0 definitely leans more and therefore rolls over much sooner than the RZR Rey. It also exhibits much more squat under acceleration and dive under braking. This is a good if you want that scale trophy truck suspension movement, but it definitely takes a more considered and conservative approach to turns on a tacky dirt track as opposed to loose sand/dirt. I personally think that the Baja Rey 1.0 suspension makes it look more like a Traxxas UDR when compared to the Baja Rey 2.0--which with the dual rear dampers appears to be a bit over-damped.

I managed to roll my Baja Rey end-over-end on the first battery pack, and one of the rear shock shafts pulled out of the plastic end link as well as the rear sway bar link popping off the sway bar. In comparison, I've rolled the RZR Rey 4-5 times at full-throttle when hitting holes that bottomed out the chassis with nothing but a few scratches on the lexan body work; I was sure I would have broken the plastic cage.

Just in case anyone is interested that already owns a Baja Rey, I thought I would leave this brief synopsis of how the RZR compares. One of these days I'll go back and dust off my YouTube account and actually do a proper review.
 
It's all about the suspension movement sometimes and the Losi Rey line seems to offer a lot of that

Wonder how a set for 1/8 Losi TLR or Associated RC8b4 buggy/truggy shocks with the MIP High-Flow Bypass valves would do on the Rey line of rigs.

 
Those shocks are huge in diameter and wouldn't fit up front.

Have you found the need to upgrade anything on your RZR? The e-Viratrue steering rack seems to be well received as the stock steering rack seems weak and the have some play.

Slash 4x4 BL2S, Baja Rey, RZR Rey. I've mentioned it earlier, even the Traxxas UDR is small in comparison to the RZR when it comes to absolute scale--the RZR Rey only looks "correct" next to a Super Baja Rey or any other true 1/5 or 1/6 scale off road vehicle.

Isn't that so expensive tho? Why not order parts as you break them? Individually? Seems better than buying a whole second RC, getting a bunch of parts you won't use, but also being unable to use the second car because you eat away at it.

You would break even way before! Spare Body/cage $100.
Chassis, 70 ish ! Diffs are $50+ to rebuild using losi parts. Or $35 new from china. Driveshaft and cvd's are like $50.
