Isuzu VehiCROSS

I used to work on these at the dealer level. The VX lovers were almost rabid to get their trucks fixed ASAP. Fun to drive, but no rear or side visibility. Nice build!!
Haha it does not surprise me you say that! They are the proudest bunch ever! U r also right about the visibility; it does not exist.

I love it I just passed one of these the other day and thought it would be awesome to build a rally version of it ..In the one pic you posted of your 1:1 rig with 31 inch tires I couldn't believe how big those tires looked on it!!! It put the size of it into perspective doesn't it. Your doing a great job and im glad your not going for the huge tire look on this..
I think the fatness of those 31"s make them look taller than they are somehow - they had the same effect in person.

Thanks for the compliments guys; what I have learned from this project is that I hate the words "back ordered"! As I tired of waiting, I started buying other things just to get stuff in the mail!

The further I got into this project the better I wanted it to be. As typical, my mind kicked into overdrive
& now I have much more work to do! I decided the K3 was not going to cut it for me so in comes
the SCX frame & hex-head hardware:

What a contrast:

And with a zoom zoom of the Dremel I made a Transformer:

I actually ended up taking out 50mm / 2" from the center of the frame & was able to
reuse existing holes to slide the halves together:
WP_20140109_001.jpg

That looks so much better!

Since I ordered an SCX frame kit I figured I may as well order an SCX trans too:
P1020679.JPG

I HATE IT! I mean, I'm sure the Axial trans would work out just fine but it is just not good enough!
I want more realism & I want more forward weight because of this short wheelbase setup...

Pretty cool build, always liked this 1:1....they were quick too..."thumbsup"
I think the chopped SCX chassis is the way to go....interested in seeing what you come up with as an alternative tranny....or are you talking the entire chassis set up?

Either way, keep it up

Oh no, I love having the frame! The trans tho is just too clunky (for that matter so are the TLT axles)! But I also figured I NEED more weight up front since the wheelbase is only 9.2" - my theory is the further forward I can have the heft of the weight the less backflips on hill climbs. OK, we all know that, but with this shorty, I think it is fully required. That is also why I prefer the 3.7" tires for this build - less leverage! Not that anything bigger would actually fit, however. Although this is a 1/10 scale body (by wheelbase - 9.2" vs 92"), I think it will be dwarfed by nearly every other "1/10" scaler out there, besides CC01's. It has been a challenging search for the level of detail at the track-width I need to remain true to proportions. The body width at the rear wheel well is 7" - not many axles that short...

Have you seen this tranny ?

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axia...ne-axial-based-gearbox.html?highlight=Hulksta

I searched for him but got his Facebook page, or at least I couldn't find any info on the tranny, you could PM him or post up in that thread and see if he still makes it
Wow! That is a novel design! Thanks for the link!

Here is another option if you want the weight up front.
GCM Racing WebStore-2014 - SCX MOTOR Mount

Very high quality parts."thumbsup"
I very much considered one of those & even the Dinky Divorce arrangement. If the Dinky stuff had not been on back-order for so long I would have one already... Still, more realism is what I am after!

The truth is, before the Axial trans even arrived in the mail I already ordered a replacement. :flipoff:

An RC4WD Triton T-case:
P1020682.JPG

So a couple things came off back-order & I snatched 'em up then went nuts buying stuff!
Steely rod ends, links, Ultra-scale driveshafts, t-case, transmission, axles, a Traxxas Summit...
what can I say, I wanted to PLAY!

BTW, since you mentioned it, there is a guy who is racing one of his. He rebuilt the other one shortly after he bought it. Check it!

So.... in came the RC4WD R3 trans:
P1020727.JPG

Guess what... also too big. I got to searching for options. The spur gear is 64T 32P. I started looking at planetary gears,
specifically the ring gear. Then I found the right terminology for what I was looking for... "Internal Gear".
At first, I found nothing usable until finally there was promise. It ended up being a stainless steel gear for more than $200 from Australia.
THEN... somehow, I saw this pic:
dtxd04-gyro-lg.jpg

Could it be? This is the gyro for a Duratrax 1/5 motorcycle... & within it, I do believe I see
a hybrid planetary ring gear / internal gear that may work! I counted 48 teeth, hmm, not great but I think usable.
So upon further searching I found a metal upgrade version & it looked to be 32P.
I looked at the diameter of the spur gear & it is 2". The diameter of the $200 Australian internal gear was pretty close to 2"!
So on a hunch, eBay got my business again that day.

BEHOLD!

back
P1020741.JPG

I used my bench grinder to knock down the lip on the back side & then I drilled out the center bore to match the spur.
I pressed in the clutch to mark the three mounting holes then drilled them out.
After some filing & sanding, I got this:

Mounted:
P1020753.JPG

So the initial test was a success - I cracked the gear tho ^^^ in my vise during filing.
Look in the above pic & U will see what I am talking about ^^^
I am going to have to make another one - I just hope it is not made out of pot metal...

Here is what I gained... err... lost:
B4AFTR.jpg

The package is now 3/8" smaller than standard.
I will have to create a new motor mount tho which should not be a problem.

Maybe you could give us a shot with the body mocked up on that chassis ....
The visual is everything....
Sorry to leave you hangin but I wanted my new axles to arrive first!
My RC4WD K44's arrived in May, I think... I had to take a break from toys for a bit.

Onto the pics!
P1020845.JPG

I have been toying
rolleyesgray.gif
with the idea of cutting up an RC nitro engine block to use as a scale-appearing trans for a while.
I'm not sure I am going to keep it or come up with something better yet.
P1020827.JPG

The most scale-appearing, usable shocks I could find were these King units! 80mm in the front & 70 mm in the rear.
Not a lot of flex available in these lengths. I maybe should have picked up 90mm for the front & the 80mm for the rear. Oh well.
The Brembo brakes I ordered fit for pics but will not work for operation...
WP_20140430_005.jpg

Here Pocco checks clearances & starts to devise a plan of attack to get the brakes to mount up right.
WP_20140430_016.jpg

The K44's are just barely narrower than the TLT's. 4mm, I think. Nice fit, aye?!
P1020798.JPG

The body won't sit quite this tall. It is leaning in the pic so the suspension is unloaded.
At least you can finally see it how it looks on the SCX chassis!
P1020832.JPG

Stuff is just thrown in there to get some decent flex shots & see how things are coming together.
P1020836.JPG

I think I have been bitten by the scale bug... I have ended up buying a few "little things" while out-&-about, just for fun!
Not sure I have the drive to create a diorama but it is fun to acquire these little doodads!
Also picked up a few items I figured were about to go on back-order or have hit discontinued status.
P1020881_copy.jpg

Now I am to the point where I need to create a prioritized plan because I have been bouncing all over the place.
I'm still waiting for a specific Holmes Hobbies motor to become available again - it's taking forever!
I'm hoping to get an ESC from him at the same time.
I guess welding the frame back together is the next step tho...

Wow! I had no idea it has been so long. I really want to make copies of the body after I improve the lines but I also need to stretch the wheelbase to match a CC01 first. I have moved to another state and started focusing on my full-size 53 Willys pickup, remodeling the basement, doing a bunch of site work, etc... so the tiny trucks have been on hold for a while. Thanks for your query... one day I’ll get back to it.

Funny that this thread was resurrected - about 5 days ago I saw a MINT VehiCross in "Schoolbus Yellow" on some reasonably nice aftermarket wheels and tires - was unfortunately moving too fast away from me for me to grab a pic of it, but boy did I want to!

I've been asking around for a VX body for years.. Who can make them? It can't be that hard now with 3d printing
