Adventures with Associated's CR-12...

Here are some pics of my Black CR12 F-150. Raised the body mounts a little, moved the rear bumper in, turned the running boards upside down for more clearance and added the white Wagon Wheels and 1.55 tires. (Bought them used for $40) So far that is all that has been done.

Time to revive this thread I guess ( and btw @ blk05crew... I'm not seeing the pics you posted above). So I went ahead and made a couple performance upgrades as well as some aesthetic mods. Thought I'd go ahead and post up.

First up is the rust and dents. I used a lighter to create some very slight dents in the roof. Pretty self-explanatory- heat & push. I also went ahead and used a Dremel with a couple various attachments and some Krylon brown "flat protective enamel"... looks like primer. No color actually specified on the can. Sprayed out a little bit into the cap then applied it with toothpicks and micro hobby brush ( like a miniature q-tip). Not sure if I mentioned it already but I previously had sprayed the white roof with flat white on the outside. Anyway... came out really well imo considering it was my first time doing rust.

Next up were the rear lights/ reflectors. I used heavy ( not sure what mm but they're thick/ hard to cut) reflective pieces in clear/ red/ orange. I love when light hits the rear at different angles, they really illuminate nicely. The two red blinkers I used faux red diamond/ sequin thingy's but applied a touch of e6000 for good measure. I also like that these lights now add a more 3D look than the original stickers. I went ahead and did the side/ rear orange reflectors too. I had started this project a while back but now it's completed so glad to get that finished up.

I also modified another rear bumper ( broke the first one). This one came black. I cut the sides down to create a finished/ boxed appearance. Then finished it off in flat white. Also added tow hook mounts and shackles as well as a license plate. Came out pretty well I think.

Added "door handles" and "locks" as well. Handles are aluminum using dbl-sided tape and for the locks I just drilled holes and used small nails, cut short on the inside and e6000'd into place.

Next I wanted to add some weight to the little rig so I mounted 1 oz in the front under the battery/ esc tray... and in the rear I used 1 1/2 oz and used a cut/ modified old tx battery cover for the mounting plate. Stick-on wheel weights obviously.

I also added a 1/4" spacer between the servo arm and the drag-link to put the drag-link more parallel with the tie-rod and reduce bump-steer. It worked although I may ultimately lower the servo... mounting it on the underside of the battery plate.

I went ahead a did some other things too... replaced the white front headlight mounting plate ( viewable from up inside the fender-well in some pics) to a black one, painted the inside buckets chrome and added faux stick-on diamonds for bulbs, painted the side-view mirrors silver and added actual reflective mirror material, did some more rust spots throughout the body, and maybe a couple other details I'm forgetting but that was about it for now.

Finally... I just had to get her out on the trail! Super muddy, foggy, humid day but it was a good test and I have to continue praising this little beast. She is just such a capable crawler and so so much fun! Thanks for looking!

Are metal gears available for the axles and tranny?

I'm not sure. I haven't opened either up yet. I thought that the axle gears in the cr12 were metal... worm gear driven. Transmission I'm not sure. I would guess that amain lists any available upgrades somewhere on the cr12 page.

Saw a Thunder Tiger for about 90$ and could not resist to finally give my old Blackfoot a new home.
I'm not sure if this is a general CR12 topic. I hope it is fine to put some pictures in here

I got this Blackfoot about more then 25 years ago. Used it on the Blackfoot chassis for many years (my son was using it a couple times lately, just as I did) but decided to put in on the side. The body is rare and I did not want to completely destroy it at one point. This chassis is almost perfect and with some minor changes I was able to make it work.
I am not very happy with the stickers I bought on ebay. But they are good enough for now.

Hey guys I know this is an older post but wanted to see what you all would think of using some cr12s for small sand dune runs with them being smaller then 1/10 could be easier to back for vacation

I've run mine quite a bit in sandy terrain. I'm guessing that due to how light the cr12 is, it partly why it does quite well. Obviously the tires play a part in that too but I'm always surprised that this rig is so capable in so many different conditions. Also worth noting that the sand that this rig typically sees isn't quite as fine and light as beach/ dune sand. It's generally a little damp and a bit heavier ( silica based).

Which of the trucks do you have? I see the one has 1.9 wheels then I could run my Duratrax tires wondering if the 1.9 will under the fords

I've got the grey FJ40. I'm currently running 1.55 Landies with 1.9 hex-drive hubs. So it's kind of a hybrid wheel at this point.

EDIT> Just texted my buddy with the cr12 Ford F150. He said that he might've been able to run a smaller OD 1.9 on his but he would've had to lift the body. He's running 1.55's on his now and they're approx 3.83mm mounted. He already has some slight rubbing issues in the front so take that for what it's worth.

Just grabbed a grey FJ. Should be here Friday, this thread should help a lot with future upgrades. Any ideas on shocks+springs that swap in to give it a lift?

For the FJ I'm not sure what the advantage would be of lifting it. It's already a pretty tippy rig without adding some weight down low. I'm still running stock springs and although I did upgrade to the aluminum version shocks, they're still specd the same as the OEM shocks... just without all the plastic parts.

I just ordered a thunder tiger version when I saw it at $80+20 ship. I'm excited to try it out but I have noticed one worrying thing, the pics are starting to show them with a very un-scale set of axles under them. I hope this is just pics and not a change in parts. Notice the Blue one in pic below vs black\red trucks? Again hopefully just stock photo type of deal and not a sign of change.

EDIT: wanted to update this post for anyone skimming through. I emailed company and they said all the trucks use same chassis and drivetrain...but never said which of the 2 shown in pics (I sent them the same pic below). I took chance and ordered anyhow but went with the black body and it showed up with the good looking axles like the black&red trucks show in my pic.

Mr Highplainesdrifter. Could you please measure the axle width from outside hex to outside hex please sir?
I have a scale build that I'm trying to find the right rig to start with.
Again thanks for any and all help.
Wayne Phillips.
