Step-by-step starts in post #7

Hey y'all. New to the forum and new to crawling, not rc entirely, but I'm wanting a wider wheel/tire package for my ascender. I've got a 1:1 1st gen toyota hilux I'm modeling it after. Looking at a set of 2.2 TSL SXs to reduce for a better stance and I see they offer regular and XLs.

Probably going to go with the XLs to go super wide, but I'm concerned with wheels. I've got a set of metal beadlocks coming, but from my searching I've seen a few times that most factory wheels are too skinny to really stretch a tire out, even if the tread is wide. i.e.. the wheels just squeeze them up instead of letting them balloon out. I've seen people talk of widening wheels, but am looking for some more info before I open up for two sets of wheels to cut up. Are yall using plastic beadlocks to do this with? Any pics of the process? All help is appreciated.

Here's a pic of the 1:1 trail rig for the meantime

Re: Which tires to cut and widening wheels

The widest if seen come on the exceed Maxstone or the redcat Everest.l, but they are pretty poor quality.

10-4 I'll be making my own I'm sure. Does anyone know which tires zion23 used for his hilux build? reg 2.2s or XL 2.2s? Main concern is I don't want to be too wide where it looks foolish or worse I run into steering issues because of back spacing. here the link to zions build

Tire on one of the photos in his thread says 5.40 - that would mean the regular size, not the XL (those are 5.80 ). ;-)

Thanks Dirk. I'll keep this thread updated with the progress. I need to get a set of wheels, make that two, so I can fab up some widened beadlocks. Gonna do some thinking on which tires to go with while I'm searching for wheels.

Re: Which tires to cut and widening wheels

Ordered tires and wheels today. 2.2 Pro-line TSL SX's and 2 sets of 1.9 axial beadlock china specials. Will be making a set of wide 1.9 beadlocks out of the 2 sets and cutting the 2.2 SX's to go on them. Beadlocks won't be here for like a month though :/ Will keep yall updated.

Which tires to cut and widening wheels

Alright! My wheels showed up last night and I got to pull the tires out to start on the reduction.

I started out by using two sets of knockoff axial beadlocks to make one set of wide wheels. I pulled a rear axle from my truck and put it in the drill to mount the wheels for cutting.

I used a razor knife and held it to the wheel while I spun it with the drill. Made quick work of it.

I glued them with med. ca glue and used big paper clips to line up the screw holes. Here they are comparing the original beadlock to one of the new wide wheels. This was turning out better than I thought.

All 4 wheels finished and compared to a 1.9 rc4wd Bogger.

Next I started on the tires. Use a set of sharp scissors and try to make as few cuts as possible to get all the way through. Keep the cuts as close to the same profile as possible to make gluing easier. Here's the pics

At this point I can't believe I'm cutting up a brand new set of tires! No turning back now

Glued up. I started with the beads, then glued the center tread and worked my way around from there. After sitting for a bit to cure, I flipped them inside out and touched up everything I missed from the outside.
Reduced 2.2 TSL SX on left and standard 2.2 SX on right

This is turning out awesome.
Vaterra 1.9 TSL SX on left
Reduced 2.2 TSL SX on right
The height was reduced a good bit. They now measure 4 5/8"(4.625) tall
and ~2.5" wide
SUPA PHAT!!

I didn't modify the foams at all. Stuck them in to see how they would do. Weren't hard to mount so I did them all. If I have issues I'll try cutting down the foams or getting a different set of that fails.

Those tires look bad ass! Nice work.
Ok that looks frigin awesome, they arent to still are they?

Thanks, I'm pleased with how the came out. They are soft with the memory foams in them and flex well over rocks until you run them in 35 degree F weather, then the memory foam gets hard as a rock. Trying to figure out new foams now.

I was looking at Crawler innovation lil nova 2 stage 4.75's, but they're too skinny. I need one for a 1.9 wheel that will fit a 4.7"x 2or2.5" tire
Any ideas?

Tuning rings from him at CI may be required.... Love those wheels and tires.

Could you post what wheels those are. I may have to try that method with my drill press. These are the closest I have seen to the short, fat tire we used to run on our real trucks back in the late 80's. Major props to you.

Wayne

Thanks Wayne. I always loved fat tires on a Toyota truck. I'm from south Mississippi's and that's how all of them were setup growing up. That's why I felt the need to do this, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Here's a link to the wheels. They are axial knockoffs. Took about 3 weeks to arrive
