I have been testing Stiffy timing rings for drivers that are very tough on motors. They are almost 75% lighter than standard timing rings, but resist can deflection and overtightening better than stock or fiberglass. Tolerance is tighter than stock, which supports lightened cans that easily flex. Our LW cans have stiffening lips at the top to reduce deflection and magnet separation, but every little bit counts. They will be an excellent choice for hard drivers and ham fisted tweakers.

Team Driver and National Champ Nabil sent a package full of motors to be refurbished and modified. In typical Nabil style we installed green endbell parts on all. All cans were machined and coated. Here is a sample of one.

A big part of testing motors is trying out combinations of parts. I wound up a set of 13t Fat Fat Fat armatures for Redbeard, specifically to test the influence of battery size and condition on motor torque. FFF on the left, regular Crawlmaster arm on the right. FFF has 26% more wire fill which increases the max torque dramatically IF the battery can handle the additional amp draw.


What did we find? FFF arms did produce a noticeable amount of torque increase, particularly during drag and overdrive/underdrive situations. With 450 size cells the punch didn't increase much, but with 600mah packs it becomes more obvious. I estimate 800mah cells would really wake them up. Worth adding an extra 1/2 ounce of copper to the rig, plus some battery? Up to the driver!

Ran two courses on Saturday with my 25-50c 850mah 4s packs.
The FXRs got a little warm, so I may have to make a change as to not smoke them, but the start up on my 35t motors was NOTICIBLY smoother and the snap when power was needed, was impressive to say the least.
In my basement testing, I pulled EVERY tooth off the small 3rd gear in my AL fighters. Going to get some tough gears, that my mill will lighten, and am thinking it is time for some new power plants.

I was VERY impressed with the effeciency of Farmers new motors on Saturday. Keep up the good work.."thumbsup"

Thanks for the props! I'm still learning a LOT about motors and design, and still have the most fun building motors up for my team. I've been working with TDK on a new magnet that will increase the torque density and smooth the startup on our motors even further. I'm a bit amazed that it hasn't been done yet, they already have the tooling.

Me and you both, I've killed a few FB rings too. But I have a pile here :ror:

I've put it on the agenda for this week to get the CNC operating and cut out a stack. We have also sent out files to production houses. I'm hoping a water jet can hit the tolerance we need so they will be cheap.

This is the new face of our 2013 Team motors. New look, upgraded magnets, and some armature tweaks.

Also shown, FEMM analysis of the next generation of Holmes motors. End goal is to get rid or reduce skewing needed for startup reasons. The design is being done in 3 slot, 5 slot, and 7 slot. So far the design changes have shown a very significant reduction in the startup force, and an added benefit of 9% higher torque density as compared to regular armatures :twisted:

It is very nice being able to built motors without the constrains of a ruleset :mrgreen:

Built a set of motors for a driver that wanted very smooth power delivery and light weight. Horizontally slotted 5 slot arms were his choice.

The arm on the right reminds me of the old "slot machine" motor from the early 90's. They would remove about 1/2" in the center of the arm. They where a 27t stock motor. The "slot" would make them run a little cooler. It ran cooler because air could to the center of the windings. The less weight would make them rev up faster.

I had 4 old brush motors in the back of my car. The car was stolen and the took the motors. One was the "slot machine". I wish I had a picture of the arm it was kind of cool.

I have a slot machine floating around here too, I ran it in my rc10. On a 3 slot I would remove the entire head similar to the slot machine. On a 5 slot its too much.

Finishing up a 520 Stumpy sized motor for Helhedded whilst we wait for puller 500 magnets. A "regular" 540 or Puller 500 30t fat wire motor is about 47mOhms. This motor is 29mOhms, a 38% reduction of resistance for the same speed of motor. Weight is hovering around 5.1 ounces, after surface treatment we will weigh again. Lighter, more powerful, better drag, and shorter than a 540 motor :twisted:

Indeed. If we push the flux area down enough (decrease of rotor length) so that the resistance is equal to a 540 of the same speed , CAD estimates a 3.75 ounce motor. It is the opposite method of the Puller 500 design, but does not enjoy the small diameter.

Thanks for the compliments! We may put a small label on them later, I've just been too busy with building Team Pro/ customs and taking care of mamma to worry about the small stuff.
