Start Thread:

While I'm still working on finishing up the M1083 6x6 I'm already diving headfirst into the next project.

I give you the concept drawing for the DAKAR Rally Tekin Racing Stewart & Stevenson M1079:

Inspired by the Rebel Offroad Isuzu at Axialfest along with Kamaz, Man and Tatra race trucks, we wasted no time getting back from Axialfest and I started rounding up parts.

Chassis

Custom 3/8" Aluminum C-Channel
Lots of 3D printed parts

Electronics

Tekin RX4
Tekin ROC412HD 4200kV
Tekin T-440 Servo
Spektrum SR2000
G.T.Power Sound/LED system
ProLine LED Light Bars
RC4WD BD Squadron LED Pods

Transmission

Axial Bomber

Front Axle

Vanquish Currie F9 SCX10-II
Vanquish Knuckles
Vanquish Knuckle Bushings
Vanquish Spiral Cut Ring/Pinion Gears
Vanquish Spool
Vanquish 12mm Wheel Hex
Incision VXD Shafts
Fast Eddy Bearings

Rear Axle

Vanquish Currie F9 SCX10-II
Vanquish Spiral Cut Ring/Pinion Gears
Vanquish Spool
Vanquish 12mm Wheel Hex
Axial AR44 Axle Shafts
Fast Eddy Bearings

Wheels & Tires

Vanquish 1.9 KMC Enduros
Vanquish .475 Hubs
Proline BFG Baja T/As
Proline Closed Cell Foams

Suspension
8 RC4WD King Shocks
Vanquish Trailing Arms F/R
Vanquish SCX10-II Shock Hoops
Vanquish Currie Anti-Rock Sway Bars F/R
Incision Bomber Rear Links F/R
Hot Racing 85mm Limit Straps F/R

The plan is to make this rig handle speed, rough terrain and some scale jumping. It will be trailing arm suspension front and rear with 2 shocks per corner and an Anti-Rock sway bar on each end with appropriate length limiter straps. We modified the original cab to look more updated and race style and will be printing out of stronger material than PLA. The front bumper and lower cab are also modified for better approach angle and we will be making a front skid plate. The back is completely hollow and will be a skeleton frame with lexan panels attached to try to keep the weight down low as much as possible. I also plan on dropping the center transfercase skid/link mount plate down some from the M1083's setup to level out the trailing arms and decrease drive shaft angles, which will also help with COG. There will be much less print time on this rig than the 6x6 as well, so hopefully it will start taking shape quickly now that I have most of the parts needed. Big Fast Truck coming soon!

Lots Vanquish Parts

More to come, stay tuned!

I got the axles, links and trailing arms assembled this morning and we are starting in on mocking up the frame! I just need to nail down the link mounting positions and we can start printing some parts. The wheelbase is exactly 400mm. Once the center drop skid area is done and the transfer case is mounted I'll tackle positioning the shock hoops. The plan is to get the frame sitting on suspension before starting in on the body.

There will be lots of differences between this truck and the 6x6, the only parts carrying over are the transmission and servo mounts.

Subscribed. It would be awesome to see rock racing at axialfest next year.

We're thinking more of an enduro style racing, checkpoints at certain distances, get there however you can as fast as you can. Think Ultra, but more Dakar style with big, top heavy trucks and stages!

Sounds great. Seems like the perfect event for my 4 door caged unimog. I hope there isn't an 18 yr old minimum like the ultra.

Wheel & Tire setup is on point. Painted the ring, hopefully it will be close-ish to the wrap color.

Looking forward to this one too.

The Pro-Line KR2's look soo good. Much better than Axial's version, IMO.

Today was step one of figuring out the heart of the chassis. After stealing some measurements from my Bomber, I settled on link mounting points and we busted out 4 mock up parts. These parts clip around the frame rails and allow me to slide them around to get everything straight. Getting the links hooked up and setting the wheel base is pretty important, then we can design the skid area and get our link mounts and transfer case mounts done. I will be building the transmission and transfer case tomorrow. Then I just had to get an idea of where the shock hoops will mount, so they are temporarily held in place and I threw on some Bomber shocks for now until the RC4WD Kings show up.

Had some time to work a bit more on the rig, made some solid progress. The drop bracket plates for the links and sub-frame assembly came out pretty good and they are mounted to the frame rails. I also mounted the shock hoops front and rear, set the wheelbase and got the transmission sitting about where I want it. Decided instead of running it up front like the 6x6 it was more simple to run it centrally both for drive line simplification and weight distribution. The cab is heavy so moving the motor and trans back should be a good thing. I'll be using two modified Bomber WB HD shafts to stretch the long distances.

The front bumper is printed and I'm working on sanding and prepping for paint. 4 Squadron lights will be mounted in it, because lumens.

Cab tray is also printed and came out pretty good, feels much more strong in ABS.

Once the trans is mounted and the center subframe area is finished up with the braces and skid, it'll be time to start in on the cab and work our way back from there. ABS seems to be printing well on the Fusion3, so fingers crossed we get mostly productive print time in the next couple weeks!

Rear suspension progress, sway bar is mounted and modified Bomber driveshaft seems like it will work at this length.

Also worked on the skid, this first version is ok but I think it can be better. Printing a new one piece design as I type.

Rear transmission mount is being worked on right now too, hopefully have one printed later today!

Rear transmission crossmember turned out perfect.

Also mounted the front sway bar they only way I could figure out. Narrowed it for tire clearance and I'm decently happy with it.

Excellent build so far. The printed bits turned out tops. Can't wait to see what comes next. "thumbsup"
