Sucks to hear. Anyone know the last time we had a successful assassination on someone in the government?

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and six others died after a gunman opened fire at a public event on Saturday, the Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office confirms.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least three other people, including members of her staff, were injured. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

Giffords was married to astronaut Mark Kelly, a veteran of Desert Storm. They have two children.

They just reported that she is in surgery now? Found lots of storys that she was dead.

They just said she's out of surgery and the Dr. was optimistic. 18 people shot and 6 killed, one being a small child. They identified the shooter as Jared Laughner, white kid around 20 years old.

I know that she does a million speeches/public talks like this all the time. Sometimes 4-5 a weekend! She has been getting threats for a while which I would guess isn't that uncommon with anyone in her position. It just blows my mind that she didn't have any type of security with her? The police said that they were NOT contacted to attend any of the events she had for the weekend. Not having them there could have been the difference between 1-2 people dieing vrs. all that did. The whole thing is very tragic! I really hope that the shooter gets the death penalty!:evil:

And on a side note..... the fawking media needs to get their chit straight when reporting that she is dead, no she is alive, no she is dead..... Imagine what that was doing to her family and friends watching! Glad to hear she might pull through though! Most people don't live after a head shot!

Most likely an insanity plea will prevail and we'll have to feed, cloth and medicate him for the rest of his life.........:evil:

So sad. She is trying to be transparent and take public questions and concerns and is shot along with many others. What a tragedy. :evil:
