Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

Hey guys, I need some advice. I tried to do a search within this thread and couldnt really find the answer. I have a Losi TEN-SCTE that I plan on parting out and looking to buy a Wraith kit. I have a Castle Mamba Monster 2 ESC but I dont know if that is overkill for a Wraith? The Mamba Monster ESC is recommended for the SCTE trucks because they are a 1/10 built from a 1/8 scale and they are very heavy. I dont think the Wraith is as heavy as my SCTE.

I also have a Reedy Sonic 4.5T 550 motor that I plan on selling because that would be overkill in a Wraith for obvious reasons. I will either use the Monster 2 in the Wraith and pick up the right motor for the Wraith or just sell the Monster 2 and pick up one of the kits recommended in the beginning of this thread. Any thoughts?

It is overkill and honestly just finding a place for it would be the hard part. I'd sell it and pick up a Mamba Max Pro.

Thanks Harley. I will keep that in mind. Shouldn't be too hard to sell off my gear to get into a Wraith.

Harley im looking for your opinion if you dont mind, Im considering buying the RC4WD 2 speed transmission for my wraith, also i am considering upgrading the esc and motor, im currently running a traxxas XL5 on a 2s lipo with a traxxas 12T 550 motor.

I really want a little speed outta this thing, and also want to be able to crawl, hence why im considering the 2 speed transmission. I think im sold on the Mamba Max Pro, but as far as the motor goes, i was wondering what ur opinion would be on a Novak 6.5T Ballistic Motor, maybe im completely out to lunch but it seems like it would gove me the best of both worlds with that transmission.

The stock ratio the transmission puts out is 2.6:1, the 2 speed tranny offers 1st gear ratio of 5.05:1, and a second gear ratio of 1.78:1.

Any feed back from all members would be great, Thanks.

Hey Harley
I was running a HH 27T Torquemaster in my wraith and loved it but have decided to change out to a 16T crawlmaster....My question is if you can see any reason why I wouldn't be ok running 32p 54T spur with a 12T pinion?

Thanks
Chuck

As soon as I seen this I broke the notepad and wrote down a few things,:lmao: only had my new p.s wraith for few days so this is really useful, thanks Harley "thumbsup"

4.5:1 is an OK ratio. You should be just fine. Watch your temps as you run just to make sure.

Thanks Harley! I'm temporarily running an Integy 35T crawler till I get my HH CM 16T and that's the gearing I'm running and it seams to do pretty good on wheel speed as well as crawling. My next goal is to get another wraith and turn it into a FOFF.

I run a Titan 12T out of a 2wd slash as well. With good results. I run trails and crawl both with mine. I run 87/14 so in 32p that would be like 56/9. I'd say anything just north of 6:1 will be good. It'll have good low end torque and a little get up and go too.

Thanks

im interested in the novak eiger pro with the brushed rockstar motor. anyone have any info on this? i am looking to mainly use it for hill climbing and deep thick mud. my wraith is totally stock for now and plan to upgrade as things break or parts are actually in stock somewhere.

Avoid Novak at all costs.

If you just want waterproof then go with a Castle Sidewinder or Holmes Hobbies BRXL. Then add whatever brushed motor you like. I would go for a 27-35 turn range if you want to hill climb at all.

Novak has the worst reputation in this segment of the hobby.

What the problem with Novak? A few locals in my area run the 18.5 in a wraith and a few other rigs and I was looking at the timbuk2 13.5 wraith edition but now I'm re thinking that idea

So I just scored a lrp 13.5 brushless sensored motor off eBay for $20, and I have a traxxas vxl esc, now I know it won't have drag brake but Harley do you think that motor would work in the wraith? If not i have many other vehicles the motor will definetly work in, it's a 3200kv btw, thanks, Matt

That motor should be fine. Not sure of the rotor diameter and I'm sure it's a 2 pole but you will be happy most likely. I would replace that ESC ASAP though.

You won't see many people running that system and if you search back to when it came out you will see why. Novak slapped "Wraith" on a crappy system and a bunch of people bought it and MANY were very disappointed.

Search back and see the reviews for yourself. 8)

Ok im getting ready to order a sidewinder 3 and a tekin 35 turn pro. I am running 87/18 48 pitch right now on 2s 3000mah 20c and a 2s 5000 mah 20c seperat packs with stock esc and a 35turn atomic seald can motor. My question is will I notice a big difference in speed at all cause what im running right now seams really doggy for power to wheels
