Best shocks for comp?

the only downfall for me is the fact that they leak like crazy. its a big problem for me atleast. i dont mind refilling them but it shouldnt even be an issue like it is:evil:

Guess that is kinda a deal breaker for me.. Do they leak from the seals or the cap?

I have run the losi shocks and the axial shocks and in my opinion the axial shocks with losi gold springs are smooth as silk and work great! Just tune with shock oil that you find to work best and change the spring to suit your needs. That's my opinion. No sense in spending crazy money when you already have a great shock in your hands.

Agreed 100% The stock shocks are a really nice performer imo. Losi golds check overall length for whichever chassis you're running and golden"thumbsup"

ok..i got some losi gold springs in my box..lets try them out..your right no need to spend money if i dont have to..thanks again"thumbsup"

It's pretty interesting that people won't bat an eye about spending $45 per axle on gears which don't do anything to enhance how your rig performs (besides just not break down), but spending $75 on a pair of shocks which could have a huge impact on how your rig performs is unacceptable :flipoff:

It's always baffled me the $$$ people will drop on all kinds of upgrades for their rigs but then run cheap rtr shocks.

Whatever works best for you is definitely the most important factor, but lets not BS ourselves, cost is not :lmao:

I don't understand why people are down on the shocks that come with the XR-10. I built them like I build my shocks for racing and they seem fine. they have the same double o-ring seal which if you lube them with Green Slime work well. The cap has a bladder which seals the top and allows for compression. The shafts are beefy at 3.5mm just like 1/8 scale buggys. The bodies are threaded alloy just like the "best".

In addition they supply a variable piston for some fine tuning if you want faster compression or extension.

My only grip is that they package a stiff spring in the box.

Terry, I just don't wanna argue over opinions. Use whatever works for you. But when someone asks what the "best" of anything is, I throw cost out the window. That doesn't mean the most expensive is the best either. It just means cost has no factor.

I come from a background of Nitro RC racing. I am used to Kyosho shocks. When I built my XR, I thought they were the worst shocks I have come across. I have built many brands before this. Until you have experienced better, you don't know whats missing.

The stock XR shocks are not linear throughout their travel. They tend to get stiffer with more compression. The lack of a bleeder hole in the cap makes tuning rebound very difficult to repeat 4 times evenly. I have drilled a bleeder hole in the threads like most racing shocks have. This helped. I also drilled another hole in the cap behind the bladder. This helped the shocks feel more linear at full compression.

You can find some of the newer style grooved o-ring shaft seals from various mftr to help seal up the bottom of the shocks. Using grease on the o-rings is alway critical in keeping them sealed.

They are still no where near as smooth and consistant as any of the Kyosho shocks I have built. Its the velvet coating that makes them smoother than any other shock out there. Ask anyone that has lots of experience in offroad RC racing. Kyosho are on top with their shocks.

The Losi LCC shocks are just perplexing as to why they are on a Crawler. IMHO, they are the worst shocks I have ever come across. Its the latest rig I have built. Leaky, air holding garbage shocks.

Using a shock matching tool like the one Losi sells, makes the differences really stand out. Its not just my perception of how the shock feels. I am fairly technical about this hobby and not just playing with toys.

to tell u the truth ive used losi shocks rc4wd, 2 sets of integy, traxxas, plastic axial, and the aluminum body axials and the aluminum axial shocks are by far the best shocks ive used u just have to tweak them to what u like im using 15 to 20 wt shock oil and the red axial springs the articulation and cg on my xr is great and on my ax10 im running no oil in the plastic stock shocks and red springs except for the back left i have 15wt oil to cut down on my torque twist

I've built all kinds of touring car, 1/10 electric buggies and trucks, 1/8 scale rigs. All different brands. I find the Axial shocks very easy to build. If you really want to talk about the "best" shocks this conversation can't go with out the Tamiya TRF shocks. Even easier to build than the Kyosho's, stay consistant, and are smoother.

That being said, I have changed out a couple of parts on my Axial shocks and they are doing great. Aluminum caps are a must. If you buy the shocks seperate they come with the aluminum caps. To not include them in the kit is pretty stupid. I also changed the bladder to the Associated TC5 and 6 bladder. Again, very easy to build, very repeatable.

I don't mind the Traxxas shocks but I do not like the Losi's. Even when I raced the Losi's I didn't like the shocks.

+1 The Losi tool make shock tuning more precise "thumbsup"

Theres definitely some guys that are passionate about their shocks.

You can't argue the fact that both the XR and LCC shocks have seen more than a few podiums. Doesn't make them the best but garbage?

As its been said..."best" is not only subjective but preference.
