I have a bunch of lipos and don't get as much run time as I like, especially the small packs I use on my comp crawlers. i do a storage charge on them (~3.8v/cell), put them in lipo sacks in an ammo can and check them about once a month to make sure they haven't dropped down in voltage too far.

given this is there any limit to how long they can be stored? some of these packs have gone a year without use. just wondering if i need to do a full discharge/charge cycle on them occasionally to keep them fresh.

I mostly race in the summer so all those packs that sit all winter ill keep them at 3.8 volts and then once a month ill charge them full and then couple hours later ill put them on storage charge to get them back down to 3.8. I haven't lost any cells doing it this way, knock on wood

Do you use a charger to discharge the packs back to a storage charge level or just run them?

I'd think the shops would need to pull old unsold packs of the wall, open them and charge them somehow, and repackage if that was an issue!

(LOL, that's what I tell myself as I look at my so-far unused many-month old packs sitting by my pile of parts for my procrastinator's nightmare Bomber build...)

i was thinking about that too but if they only had packs in inventory for a few months before they are sold it isn't something they would have to deal with. buyer beware?!

sounds like i'm not too far off base from some others out there. mine may sit for months or a year without use but i do store them appropriately and check the the voltage regularly.

I have lipos going back 8-9yrs if not older... earliest came from YeahRacing. I store them at room temp charged to about 8.0V.

Like all good creatures they've put on weight with age, and their Internal Resistance in risen. Effective capacity falls too... so I guess they'll keep working till they don't last long enough for runtime anymore.

Have got younger packs some from experimental/factory-startup... these bloated really early. I stopped using them after they got too fat to fit in the hole.... never charged them again but just keep monitoring their Volts. They stayed above 3.0V/s for several years... then suddenly they've lost a cell down to under 1V.

I keep em in the fridge (at storage voltage). I've read somewhere on the interwebs the internal chemical processes slow down when stored at lower temperatures. Makes sense to me
