Ive always wanted to build something like this without re-inventing the wheel, and it wasn't until Losi came out with the rzr rey's rear suspension for me to do it in large scale.

More to come...17215271698388122357970350128697.jpg17215271968547439004128903195968.jpg20240720_182041.jpg20240720_181948.jpg20240720_181912.jpg20240720_181906.jpg

So i took the rest off the drivetrain/etc of of the chassis after measuring the wheelbase at full compression and then figuring out the difference needed for it to match the beetle body. Took the two chassis, and halved my measurement to cut off from a central reference point.

This way I can also use the old chassis as a template for another project........ "Sinister chuckle" ensues.

I'm going to take them both to my old job and have one of the "guys", probably myself if the boss lets me load it up on the mill and cut each chassis in half and maybe even mill a couple of slots for some steel reinforcement plates/plates to braze the rollcage to.

Still doing a lot of rollcage image/screenshot shopping of what would look best under that body.20240801_160337.jpg20240801_171039.jpg

Haha, this is all the progress I've made. I picked up the chassis from the machine shop. Lol, end.

Unfortunately, i have been dealing with my disabled cat a lot these last few days. While my family has been on vacation for the last month, my son's cat Cheeseball came home "unable to use his hind legs" about 2 weeks ago, ie one leg was completely paralyzed/limp the other had a little, bit of mobility issues, but came back to use after the first 2 days.

Hes had a similar problem about 4 months ago and healed up. That was a blood clot, and this one must be a big one

After a long sit down with our kids and making "an informed decision " about the cat and breaking the news of it needing part of its leg amputated, the possible complications, and his chance of survival due to his heart condition or another clot. (The wife and i had already said we'd spend the $ to extend his life as long as we could) we made a family decision with an emphasis on our 16 year old boy giving the final say so. Of course he chose his baby boy!

It's made by Planet toys and was sold at Walmart iirc.

Well, i finally picked up my chassis and the little pieces from my buddy, and got to assembling for mock-up, AGAIN. Lol

Took some .250 mild steel and aligned the holes in the chassis to the center of the rod. Clamped it down with a c-clamp and transferred the holes with a center punch.20240924_094439.jpg
I did ok, holes all lined up, and no gaps, ish.20240924_094543.jpg
Even the small pieces fit, which I'll take the whole thing with me to school tomorrow, and ask the professor to weld the chassis and the small parts together in a few places.20240924_094550.jpg

Quick test fit.20240924_095615.jpg

so, I was looking over the new Losi BR 2.0 and it appears to have identical-ish front suspension arms as the RZR rey. Difference being the new rig has a dual shock setup. Screenshot_20240924_115849_Chrome.jpg
Screenshot_20240924_115011_Chrome.jpgand suspension arms with dual shock mounts. Neat! I want that, so I ordered up the parts (arms) from my lhs about a month ago.
For some reason they had to special order it so I'll have to follow up on that and see if i can stil cancel the order as I'm tired of waiting for the distributor for some16 dollar parts.

The black is the Baja rey 2.0 and the grey the rzr rey, so all i need is another set of shocks and these arms. Furthermore this suspension upgrade will benefit this build even more. A tube rollcage made from some 1/4 and 3/8 brakeline will be bent and brazed to the steel rails that run down the sides. More to follow20240924_095719.jpg

Look at a Jimco class 1 / 1500 Hammerhead buggy. Same rear format, so once the bug is done, you now could do a go fast desert racer, like the Wilson rig.

That's somewhat kinda what i already had brewing in my skull before buying this rtr. I had bought these arms and was mocking-up some traxxas diffs and losi Rock rey front driveshafts that I had laying around.

Sometimes in the future, I'm looking at building a sandrail looking rig with, one or two 1/10 lockable summit diffs. These trailing arms, this chassis leftover pieces and some brakeline.20240806_223434.jpg20240704_124958.jpg

Who makes the diff mount? I ran Summit diffs on my Bomber build, mounting diffs sucked, I could have used something like that. I was thinking lockable diffs, perfect. Not, no room for the extra servos. If I had to do it over, E Revo. As it sits now, how wide is it?

Those are just emaxx diffs and bulkheads. For the summit diffs I'll make a skeleton holder from tube and some tabs.

For what it is worth, having used both diff options you mention, E Max is the way to go, they are narrower than the Summit, thus reducing cv/u-joint angle. My .02 again says punt on Summit diffs, they suck to mount. If you don’t already have them, I can get you pics and or dimensions should you desire. The beauty of your choice of trailing arms is minimal plunge by the axles. Not that it is critical in rc as in real. I am looking forward to your buggy build.

Also requested to get my chassis welded by the professor in class today. These are the results:20241002_105327.jpg20241002_105353.jpg20241002_105359.jpg20241002_105410.jpg

Turned out like dis not fan. however. whatever. this sentence is wrong. He stated he can weld aluminum like a MFer, but the "............." was dirty, so, ya, anyways, its cool. I'm going to be welding on it anyway, so it's going to have some splatter period dot.

So in order for me to use the summit transmission, I had to make some spacers that are approximately 32mm long and that a M4 fastener could fit through the center. I had this stainless steel tube laying around, so. these became standoffs for the transmission to sit on. Here's my fancy tubing cutter setup:20241002_195138.jpg
Here i centered the motor20241002_202934.jpg
Motor is in line, misaliged driveline.

Aligned driveline misaliged motor.
20241002_203018.jpgI could make a transfer case of sorts with all these many mod1 gears I had bought, or or keep the driveline in line as is, and have the motor offset from center by just a few cm as compared to the stock motort/transmission location20241002_202942.jpg

Dirty and most importantly; anodized.
Remove the layer of anodizing with a clean flapper disc.
Thoroughly clean the parts and fully weld both sides while purging the weld area. (y)

Nice tabs. Are the gear ratios f/r similar? As for axles, good call. Summits will get you about 40* in angularity and use the same spline format as the Revo u joint stuff. 6mm axles. Burning the clear anno off while welding makes for toxic fumes. What do you get for wheel travel?
