I'm not sure they are gun drilled. Looks to me like they were center drilled so that they can be supported by a live center.

Ya, isn't gundrilling when you spin the drill bit one way and the axle the other? Which causes the drill bit to stay perfectly centered? I don't think Joel has that kinda laith?

I'm not sure what gundrilling is and I sure can't spin both pieces at the same time.

Whoa, thats a chunk of weight gone! I've never worked with Ti, I always assumed it was difficult to cut. Probably more dependent on grade and temper just like steel, eh? How do you think the fluting will affect torsional stiffness? Maybe it will be like a spoke, where more flexibility leads to a longer lasting and truer wheel. Any shock loads that the shafts can dampen will certainly help the rest of the driveline.

Ti was fun. Seriously. Due to the large OD the tortional stiffness will be there. I'm pretty gentle on my rig so I don't see these failing except from a catastrophic fall ie shear force. Hope to drive it soon. Will install your endbell kit tonight. Thanks again.

I think turning each piece would have the same function as increasing the speed of the lathe only.

Gun drilling is the same idea as drilling a hole, or boring a hole with a boring tool only much more accurate and at deep lengths.

Counter-rotating the work and drill is a technique to eliminate the slight error caused by gravity. I've had some military stuff fabricated that way. But very specialized equipment is used.
 
Gettin my Krawl on...

Thanks a million Krawlfreak for my simply beautiful new chassis cross brace"thumbsup". I made some 7075 threaded tabs and Hysol'd them in place. 3g lighter and a lot stiffer and better looking than the old one. I lowered the inner link mounts a little bit too thus reduced rear clocking/lowering the motor and introduced 2 deg more caster thus lowering the front motor/bat/servo. Body mounts of a similar design are on the way. I installed the Holmes Hobbies lightweight endbell kits and put my RCBros "Spider Gears" in the front case to match the back. I lightened the steering crossmember and front upper link mount a little bit. Hope to get her all buttoned up tonight and take her for a spin.

How much an axle can twist without breaking is a big selling point in the 1:1 world. It one of the reasons longfields are almost 1 ton strength while being considerably lighter.
