1/10 vs 1/8?

Hello all,

I have loved RC most of my life but I am totally new to crawling. Done some light crawling in my truck, which gave me the bug to watch crawling vids and then came across RC crawlers and was hooked. I am very tight on $ right now so I am trying to start with a descent rig that will have room for improvements/upgrades. I have been looking at the Exceed Maxstone for a 1/10 scale and the Exceed Max Torque for a 1/8 scale.

My first question is which scale to go with? Seems to me that the 1/8 is more readily upgradable. It has the dual motor setup, is set for upgrade to dual steering, and comes with a 3 channel 2.4 radio. But is seems huge! Should a beginner start with something smaller? In my hopes of getting good at this, does anyone compete with 1/8?

The Maxstone is a single motor setup and I am unsure how upgradable it really is. I see no indication of being able to make it 4 wheel steering. Will it be under powered as a single motor setup?

I am sorry for so many questions. I am really excited to get into this. I eventually want to get to a point where I can start competitions and groups up here in New Mexico. I don't know of any currently. Also, If I am missing the mark with Exceed, should I go with another line like redcat? They are the only two that I found had descent reviews that were under 200.00 as RTRs.

Any advice you can give will be GREATLY appreciated.

Signed,

Your best bet is to pick up a used ax10 based rig to get started with.

You can pick up a mildly built rig for a good price.

Understood. I started off looking at all the Axial stuff. XR10 was the beast I wanted. But when I started following one of the posts for setting up the xr10, with just the basics I was into $800+. Then I thought I was trying to start with a Cadillac and that may be a mistake. Plus, I just can't swing that kind of money right now. I will keep looking for some used rigs from Axial, that is what I want.

If you end up competing, 1:10 (the original AX10)

How are your building skills?
You can build it from the ground up using used parts and save yourself money plus have a better rig than a RTR or Kit.

I have 4 Axial based rigs and have never bought an entire truck... all built from (mostly) used parts. "thumbsup"

My building skills are descent. I am curious which parts are not recommended to buy used and which you can really get away with. Any suggestions on sites for used parts? I have seen ebay has stuff as well as Amazon. Anything better?

I really appreciate you all taking the time to respond. I am desparate to get into crawling and I am not used to this kind of response from a forum. Usually newbs get told to f' off. You guys are great! I think there is a new motto to go up soon. I think "Crawlers just do it better!"

Edit: "Crawlers do it better. Slow, twisted, and vertical."

There are quite a few vendors on this forum that will have many of the parts you want and provide great service.
RPP Hobby
TSC Crawlers
ECRC Hobbies
and plenty of others in the vendors section.

+1.....also "buy a star" and get access to the "for sale" section here. Lots of stuff pops up in there for decent money.8)
