Special Section: Newtown School Shooting

CBS News is reporting that nine of those killed are adults and the rest are children.

According to the Associated Press, the gunman was killed at the school, but it was unknown how the unidentified gunman died.

According to CBS News, the gunman, who is believed to be 18 to 20 years old, got into an argument with people at the front office at about 9:41 a.m. People have to be buzzed in before entering the school and there is a camera to view whoever is entering the building.

Connecticut State Police is assisting the Newtown police with the shooting investigation. Multiple police, ambulance and emergency crews from the surrounding area remain at the scene.

There are reports that a teacher was shot in the foot and taken to the area hospital. Officials at Bridgeport Hospital have confirmed that they have one woman, who was shot and in stable condition.

State police said this is one of the worst shootings emergency officials have seen in a long time.

The children inside the school have been evacuated to the nearby Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department and reunited with some of their parents at this staging area.

Eyewitness News reporters on the scene observed a man in camouflage gear being taken away from the staging area. He screamed to people in the area that he was not involved in the shooting.

The superintendent's office said all the schools were placed in lock down schools as a preventive measure to ensure safety of the students and staff. All schools expect for Sandy Hook Elementary School are no longer on lock down.

The only shooting was at Sandy Hook Elementary School, officials confirmed.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is at the scene in Newtown and just before 12:30 p.m., he had finished a conference call with federal officials about what assistance could be needed.

Danbury Hospital is lock down as a precaution measure to allow their staff to work uninterrupted and give patients privacy. Hospital officials will not confirm number of dead.

According to Newtown officials, afternoon kindergarten is canceled for Friday and there will be no midday bus runs.

According to sources, Yale-New Haven Hospital has activated emergency triage unit, which responds to mass-casualty incidents.

There are 600 students in grades kindergarten to fourth that attend Sandy Hook Elementary

I just saw something about this on another forum. This is just so wrong and horrific, wtf is wrong with people lately........

What the hell is wrong with people? If you feel the need to shoot something, do us all a favor and shoot yourself. Why an elementary school? It's very disturbing, so much so that I'm seriously considering homeschooling my kids.

My thoughts go out to anyone who has any loved involved injured or uninjured, those kids will never be able to live without fear now. It's very sad.

Please keep your thoughts and prayers for the families and children that have been effected. Also I want to ask for prayers for the children that survived this horrific act...they will have a long recovery.

This is so sad, I agree with alot said here, and my thoughts go out to anyone involved.

Some more news, the Gunman was 24, and his kid went to the school. He had some sort of dispute with the principal and killed her among many others, i think i might have also heard he killed his own kid too, but im not positive

My god this is horrible. Like said above, please send prayers to all those affected. This has me deeply saddened. What the hell is our world coming to?

Can't say that I have ever been brought to tears before reading news reports. I'm going to be giving one huge hug to my 1st and 3rd graders when they get home tonight. To me this is another reminder of just how precious every moment you get to spend with your children and family really is. My heart goes out to everyone involved.

If I was one of the guys above me my kids wouldn't be in school right now....I'm 19 with a girlfriend right now and I just told myself that my kids won't be going to school when they are young. Ill support my wife and kids so that I don't have to worry about either of them going to work or school to have something horrible happen to them. It takes a real sicko to kill innocent kids and people...I feel horrible for the parents and family's that this happened to. RIP to everyone..

Very sad...... I HATE to hear about these things but I fear we are going to see more.

Mental illness with the time of year add the "doomsday" factor--all I see is more bad shit happening...

First and foremost, I hope that all the people directly involved can find solace at some point in their lives from this. They have a long road ahead.

The gun control nuts are going to have a field day with this one.

This is just disgusting. I so might go get my daughter, just to give her a hug.
My wife is a kindergarten teacher home today and told me about it. She was crying.

So sick of the news lately. So much killing and tragedy in the world.
Don't understand people anymore. So many lives effected nationwide from this.
