Wheely King Transmission Details

I think the "shim" comment was related to the bevel gears inside the axle -not to the transmission. HPI Replacement gears for the axles come with shims, so you can re-use the old shims and double up behind the small beveled pinion gear to tighten the gear mesh some more.

Are you freaking kidding me?? Member since Aug 2005 and this is your first post??!!?? holy crap talk about lurking!!!

Never too late to jump in... bought a WK 4X4 as soon as I read the HPI convertion article. I ran the WK once, started doing the convertion...a year later, finally finished converting into a crawler and I have to admit this crawling thing is fun!

Nice!! Glad to hear!! You know you have a couple crawlers down your way! Look up Neil E Here. I think he is Fort Worth,,, I think!!

Glad you are having fun and dare I say you are hooked like a whore on crack??

hmmm...looks like they've gone up ~$10 since I bought my set. Anything different about these other than the price? Looks like I've about wore out my first set of these and will either get another set of these or change to an R2.

Hmmmm that custom trans looks ALOT like an Axial trans...

I for one will be over the summer making a 2:1 chain drive transfer case... mainly for mudding and trail rigs.

Sorry to add to an old post, but my research indicates the gears are mod1. I purchased a 5mm 15t 32p pinion to replace the little gear in my WK and found it doesn't mesh and is too small in diameter. Not having anything left of the original gear I measured out the others and they size up perfectly as mod1, and they run smooth against my HPI Savage spur gear.

OK well, this a very old thread, but got a question. trying to get my hands on metal transmission gears for my wk. where can i find them???
:badger::badger: :badger: :badger: :badger::badger: :badger:

The internal gears are metric MOD1 not 32p! 15T, 22T, 28T

There are a couple aluminum gear sets available but no steel ones currently.

There are a couple old threads on some steel gear conversions using 5mm boar MOD1 pinion gears. I posted a build a while ago and have built another steel gear set so I should update the thread some time.

wk tranny ect.

i have read all of your posts and well i dont crawl my wk but i wish to either repace my motor which i believe is a 13 turn modified brushed with a 9 turn brushed or go brushless. will i fry the tranny, axels or bevels ect. mine is stock otherwise except i was able to order my wk barebones except the stock pos 27 turn ultraslow motor. i dont crawl but would a 9 turn be too fast anyway?someone reply who is running a similar setup!

Chongdigga has a 5700kv CC motor in his Wheely King
And he's got steel gears in the gearbox
He has not had any issues with those steel gears for over 1½ years

However The CKRC aluminum gears only lasted a few weeks or was it days

Ok, here is what I did. I installed metal pinion gears in place of the top 2 gears. I am still using the plastic bottom gear as I have never stripped one of those out.

I used the stripped out gear as a spacer on the top shaft, ground a small flat for the set screw to tighten on, and put the e-clip back on to keep proper alignment. The middle shaft is cut from a piece of 5mm rod I had, but you could use a drill bit (5mm or a #9) or something close to 5mm and make it work.

On the middle shaft I put a spacer on each side of the gear to keep the shaft centered in the bearings, probably not necessary but I wanted to make sure it was done right.

Here you can see it assembled, this mod eliminates the "slipper" clutch in the process. I still use the stock plastic bottom gear, like I said earlier, I have never stripped one of those out. So far I have abused this setup quite a bit with the 27t on 3s and have had no issues.

I used a 15t mod1 pinion Dynamite #2635 for the top gear and 22t mod1 pinion Integy #23176 for the middle gear. Those were the gears I could find easily, but looking a little harder I found the Hot Bodies gears #67579 and #67566 have an even better mesh with each other and the plastic gear. I would recommend the hb gears, you can get them at Tower for sure for about $20 for both.

Also, I cut the 5mm shaft for the middle gear to 1.140" long. You will have to remove the little plastic reducer bushing in the bearings for this shaft.

Sorry if this is a little confusing, I took a couple posts from a different thread and put it all together in this one.

I used HPI Flux pinions and made a steel main gear

And I made a new topshaft so I can use a VXL slipper

The bottom gear is awesome but you need to source the gear, and then turn it down on a lathe. The top two is a mod that anyone can do and adds a lot of strength to the transmission and eliminates the clicker clutch."thumbsup"

Way ahead of you on the sourcing "thumbsup"
