What motor do I want?

Alright everyone. I'm due for an upgrade for my II. Mainly looking at Holmes Hobbies but that isn't set in stone. My current configuration is the RTR Axial ESC, Axial brushed 27t, and currently on 2S.

My two needs are 1. more wheel speed and 2. waterproof. I'm wanting to go 3S so keep that in mind. Also, will any of the Holmes Hobbies work on the AE-5 ESC?

I swamp the truck pretty often (pretty much every time lol) so waterproof is the main thing. Not sure if brushed or brushless is better for this. Lastly, the terrain is mostly east coast dirt with rock, 50/50 trail/crawling. so...

1.Waterproof
2. More wheel speed than 27t on 2S but new motor on 3S

Any suggestions?

I run ae5, 35t, 3s with 15t pinion on stock spur. Gives me decent wheel speed. Have you tried 3s with your current set up?

If you mud/submarine your rig a lot, I personally would be using cheap throwaway motors like the Traxxas motor that EeePee mentioned. You can buy 6 of them for the price of a single Crawlmaster Pro.

I'd stick with using brushed if you plan on submerging it.
Brushed motors can be submerged without doing anything.

But you still have to waterproof all the other e components if they're not already.

Brushless can be waterproofed as well...
but it won't be as easy... and will be more costly if the waterproofing fails.

Yep, already have a BEC installed but I haven't tried 3S yet. I guess I saw a bunch of high dollar motor setups on here and got carried away thinking that was necessary. Perhaps I was overthinking it.

I make a 21t TrailMaster Sport 550 that is sealed can, higher quality than the titan, but priced well for water use. Also tuned for crawling smoothness.

Thanks for supporting our vendors EeePee!

okay. I was unaware. Go for the Holmes motor then, it will obviously be better than the crap ass Traxxas motor.

Keeping up with new products is pretty tough , the market is getting pretty active "thumbsup"

Jake This is a smoking deal at under $20. I have the Tekin 35T HD and have submerged it a few times with no problems. I am running 3S and have great wheel speed.

As everyone else has said though make sure everything else is waterproof.

Brushless is good for the raw power that it has, but I don't notice a huge difference between my buddies brushless scx10 and my brushed scx10.2 on the rocks. He can definitely bump it better than I can, and his max wheel speed is about instantaneous where as mine has a slight wind-up, but I also see some areas where his set up hurts him because it is so snappy

Just the man I was looking for! I hadn't noticed that motor so thanks for pointing that out. Do the trailmasters have the same poles as an Axial motor? Like is a 21t TM similar in speed to a Axial 21t? Also, will this motor run on an AE-5 ESC?

+1 for an answer to this.

Also, any links to this motor? On your website, I see a 550 Trailmaster Sport, but don't see one in a sealed can?

The trailmaster is 3 slot, it will be similar speed to other 550 21t or 540 27 t motors. It should run fine on the ae5. Trailmaster sport is "sealed can", non rebuildable style.

Awesome, so is there a performance difference between the 540 27t and the 550 21t?

I run 35T Trailmasters on 4s through a BRXL, especially in summer cause all our comps take place in creek valleys. It took a full pull of a TTC sled to kill one. Wheel speed that rivals brushless on less cells, and a heckuva lot cheaper to replace.
