Turtle's Modified XV-01

So what shocks are you using now? I have Gmade, but they have 14mm body, and 19mm ID springs. This is rather rare diameter, so I'm unable to find soft enough springs (less than 3.2). Because of that, I'm thinking about switching back to 12mm shocks (TRF, Losi, TA, etc.).

My old rear shocks (which are now on the front) are Losi, they were for the rear of one of their 14th-16th scale 4wd buggies. My rear shocks are Traxxas big bore 4" shocks. The spring diameter is a hair large for the rears and fronts, but there is enough they stay on.

I have had those on mine for a while. Did you swap out the 44 mm shaft for the 42 mm?

I didn't buy the complete set of joints. I bought everything individually so I wasn't stuck with the longer shafts.

I have been spending my time on the X Ray T2 lately, so not much going on with the XV01, except I ordered a few sets of random tires from China.

This is a great thread. Just picked up one of these myself. I've been trying to decide on power plant. I have a castle sidewinder v3 so brushed of sensorless brushless are my options. Has your castle 4 pole been doing well for you? I'm considering that motor.

A group of guys in the Czech Republic make these bodies in a garage. They go by Monkeyracing.ze

Honestly my favorite motor I have ever used on this car has been the CC 5700 2 pole. I have been using a 8.5 Thunder Power censored motor for almost a year and prefer the crazy power of the 5700.

Is a sensored brushless system a must have? From what ive read it seems like a mixed bag as far as what people are running. Just getting into rally so I have a lot to learn. Been doing comp and scale crawlers so I'm tuned to smooth low end torque!

No, no, no, not at all. If you are just starting out there is no reason to go crazy and get an expensive brushless system. Start simple and figure out what you like. You may find yourself preferring the raw power of a nonsensored system, I do.

That's good to hear. As far as kv would the 3800 I'm considering be a reasonable start? I'll be doing dirt and grass mix for running areas. Not looking for insane speed. I assume gearing combos can get extra speed if needed.

3800 will get the job done. For a long time i used a 5700kv motor, I didn't use it for the top end, but more so for slide control.

That's good to here. My only issue know is the esc. I see mixed reviews on the sidewinder sct esc having heat issues. Not sure if that would be a concern with the xv-01 given its size. Seems like people who are having issues are running in heavier short course rigs.

You shouldn't have any heat issues in the car. In my experience that esc is notorious for requiring an external BEC, regardless of the servo. Also, I have only used that motor for a short period of time, but when I did it suffered from some pretty horrendous cogging.

Still my go to rally car. Had a belt failure on the Xray T2 during some practice at the last race so I went with the XV01. I still suffer from some "happy" backend, but besides that the car drives very well.

Happy backend, have you tried softening the rear springs or even dropping it down a little in the rear?

Thinking about getting one of these. Would it still be wise to jump on this band wagon or is there a newer, similar kit out there in 2017 I should look at? This will be my first rally type RC

So with all the experience which would you recommend XV-01, TT-02, Kyosho Fazer VE-x or the MST XXX?

I'd say that the choice is between the XV-01 and the XXX, really. I like my XV-01 better than my XXX, but the XXX hasn't been sorted yet- I've only had it since Christmas. Anyone would be happy with either. The TT-02 doesn't have the adjustability or basic geometry of a rally car, so it's more of a rally-ish car.
