Tribute to my Dad's 79 F100 featuring Banzai

not yet, been watching the mailbox like a hawk though.
haha its funny my wife calls me out when i come in with all the mail...
"you're expecting parts for your toy truck again, aren't you."
:lmao:

If you want a smoother finish you could shoot them with primer first - automotive primer, the gray stuff. Two or three coats then sand them with 320 or 400 - they'll get nice and smooth. It would fill up the porosity. Then final paint color.

Yeah, airbrush is the shiznit for model building and painting. A Pasche VL kit is about $60. But they last forever. As mentioned, I'm happy to ship it out to you - just send it back when you're done. It's been sitting in a cabinet for years 'till I pulled it out for my Wrangler body painting. Just shoot some acetone through it to clean it out, clean the bottles, ready for the next session. Super nice for detail work - so much control over the fan and volume of paint.

there is no "final color" though. i was trying to polish them to get as close to weathered chrome without actually taking them to get chromed. which, now that i have thought about it long enough, might be the only real answer here.

thanks for the offer, Chris. i will look into buying one, i just haven't needed it often enough to justify it. but now that i have a nice bench, and a 15 gal craftsman compressor just sitting... i will get one eventually. just not in a rush.
but if i get that 3D printed ford body... hmmm...

I just sent you the tracking # in PM, Post Office says they delivered 1-12. :x

PS: Hope we didn't send it to your old address?

Omg yeah I totally forgot to give you my new address. Yikes.
See my pm to you.

Meanwhile, wheels are clear coated and I think they look good.
Had commander rogers look them over... pretty high standards. I took that pic 2 hours ago and he is STILL out there inspecting!

Giving them a day to cure and assembling tomorrow.
Heh. Assembling. Steve rogers. Avengers. See what I did there?

Didn't get the mail thing sorted. Went straight home today. Will stop by tomorrow.

I do have something positive, however. Err, rather... commander rogers does...

Out with the old...

In with the new!

I think he likes it...

However... these boingers gotta go.

ay8xtu.jpg

So cap, uh... I mean commander rogers is disappointed in the rear suspension. Gotta say he is not wrong. He hardly ever is.
So... next on the list, GCM rear leaf stage 2.

Pretty happy with how it sits otherwise. Sharp eyes will notice wheelbase is still a little to long. I hope to take care of that with the leaf kit.

After that, finish the body and figure out how to mount it.

Almost there!!!!

(Then phase 2 starts... )

Ok got the mail thing sorted! And got the mini care package!

Thanks Ernie!

I will see if commander rogers is up to installing the shift kit for the trans today, or maybe he needs to phone a friend? ;)
Hmm what avenger has more mechanical skill... i think tony is still mad at him.

Or i could take it for a quick spin to try the 1.55s out. Might get more rain tonight. Heh... wait and see, fellow ascenderholics!

*so there i was, carefully masking the top side of the body to prep for some bedliner undercoat.
I walk out the back of the garage, bedliner can in one hand, body in the other and i feel
Drip.

Drip.

Naturally im all set and it starts raining!!!!

I guess steve rogers will keep entertained tonight by calling up deadpool for some fireside fart jokes.

**ok, Steve called the only guy available...

"Hey Cap! Got here as fast as I could! Now what's this about trannies! Uh, what's the wrench for...?"
b4bz8o.jpg

Once Steve and wade got the passenger side shock tower off... and I will spare you what wade did with the shock... I was able to see what was what, and started prepping the servo and mounts while Steve and wade went to work pulling the trans and motor assembly...
Had to drill a center mount hole in the servo bracket. To the vice with you!
2uj4m7d.jpg

Nice and snug!
znsk2a.jpg

Let's check back with Steve rogers and wade Wilson...
"Ok wade, hold it right there while I torque down the servo."
2ccmc0y.jpg

(No photoshop here, they are actually holding up the entire motor/trans assembly!)

"Steve!? Ummm... hello?? Ow."
2zpimi9.jpg

While wade walked that off, I got the servo linkage dialed in and servo endpoints adjusted. Steve and wade got it back together, even with wades crushed pelvis only halfway healed. Good job fellas!

Took it for some circles in the garage, more adjustments of servo endpoints, and yankee the trigger so hard, it threw the scale hardware of the back wheel!!! Sucker moves!!! Low gear is great torque. I swear this thing could be the go to rig for just about anything!

Going to take it out for some trails soon. More vids, joined with my son with his barrage, I'm almost ready to mount the body! This build is literally picking up some real speed!!!

Leafs and interior are next on the list...

Did a few things with the body this weekend.

Sprayed inside with Bedliner in a can. Masked off headlight and tailight areas so a will still get light out, eventually.

Sprayed the "tonneau cover" area of the bed with black plastidip. Breaks up the bed enough so it looks less like a shoebox with a cab. And, I can peel it off and use that panel later if I ever need more material that matches the body.

Last thing I did, gotta admit I'm pretty proud of.
I was not impressed with the jconcepts grill decal. It didn't wrap around the corners of the truck at all, giving it even more of a shoebox look.
I carefully cut out the jconcepts grill decal, separated the headlight shrouds, blinkers, and grill insert. Left me with a template that I trapped under a strip of aluminum duct tape and taped that down to my hobby mat. Pressed down and it made a perfect raised uhhh not sure how to explain other than when you put foil over a coin in school and rubbed it. Same thing...

Anyway I cut that out and yeah it's not perfect but I can do this any number of times until I get it right. This is more of just proof of concept. Prototype.

Blah blah. Words.

On to pics!

Oh and the "bumper" is just a visual place holder for now.
I will get to the headlights and grill later. Big plans for the insert.

Better shot of the tonneau cover...
2eoefxy.jpg

That's it for now. I plan on using the tape for all the trim, it's pretty good to work with. Only question is, how good will it hold up on trails? It leaves marks easy like fingernails can crease it pretty bad.
I had good results smoothing out wrinkles and dents just rubbing a screwdriver shaft over it. So far so good!

*might scratch build some mirrors from that steel sheet in the background too.

** oh and you can see in the bottom pic, the motor protrudes pretty far into the cab. not sure i can cover it with a dashboard. are there "stubby" brushed motors??
*** Ok did a search and found team brood stubby motors. hmmm... and he's a member here... :)

Took her out for a little test in the backyard today.

Too hard to shift with one hand! Hahaha!
Actually I did try climbing those little obstacles in the back. Got horribly stuck because of limited ability in the dirt grabbers. This is no Comp machine! Well, not unless I change shoes ;)
Anyway I did throw some dirt in that.
Should I post it? Haha of course I should!
Brb stand by for the edit...

*even not making it up and over can still be fun!

Tires have a lot to do with, but that wood looks like it isn't providing a much traction either. "thumbsup"
Nice window decal too!
Ernie

Thanks Ernie! yeah i figured that's a good place for some low-key free advertisement for a well disserved improver of axles ;)
and yes those tree stumps are from a bird of paradise i had to cut because it was leaning on my fence real hard. and they are SLIPPERY! part of the fun though.

Chris, its actually set up for WB2 (11.3-ish), but the (custom Lunsford ti) links have been adjusted as short as i can for now.
that's the whole challenge with this Jconcepts 79 ford body, its only 11" WB and 7" wide. its for MT's so its smaller than a normal 1:10 crawler body. i'd say its more like 1:11 scale? not quite 10 or 12.
and yes, GCM Leaf kit stage 2 is next on my list! the rear shock towers prevent the current body from sitting down as low as it needs to, and the leafs will help adjust WB a little more too.

Trust me, every aspect of this build has been planned, discussed, re-planned, discussed more... ;) its long term and nowhere near finished yet. this is phase 1. phase 2 will be 3D printed body with 313mm WB and maybe even radius arms and driver side pumpkin offset up front! constant evolution in the quest of perfection!

so that said, yes i still have lots of work to do on this lexan body before phase 2. ;) need to finish cutting up strips for trim, and need to scratch build those mirrors and bumpers. needs interior too! will probably get the proline classic truck interior, modify it as needed to make it look more like a 79 F series.

Got out to a trail just down the street from my house today.

And just because Ernie was surprised I didn't do one earlier...

Aw hell... its plenty of power and the dirt is loose enough... let 'er RIP!!!

GUYS!!!!!
:shock::shock::shock:

LOOK what TRAXXAS is doing!!!!!!

the entire grill is an EXACT MATCH of my dad's F series!!!
and look at those wheels!!!

2rz9eup.jpg

70i5q9.jpg

i don't care what i have to do... i NEED that body set! and might have to make this build a 1.9 just for those wheels.
the only way i can think of to achieve all this, is with that 3D printed F series body that was posted earlier in this thread. add the traxxas details and its PERFECT.

phase 2 just potentially got WAY more awesome... 8)

That's PERFECT Chris!!! "thumbsup" "thumbsup"
Once in a Blue Moon, when TRAXX-ASS isn't SUING some little guy out of business, they can come up with something REALLY nice!! :ror: :lmao:
It only took me a second to realize........ I NEED THAT BODY BADLY!!!!! IF Traxxas can actually release an Unpainted Body Kit.
Historically, they haven't liked doing that since the 1980's! Their apparent philosophy has been since then, Cater to the Basher, the Weekend Warrior, and the Kids who will torture and nag their well-employed Parents FINALLY cave in, and PAY the exorbitant Prices that they are able to ask, because they have a loyal following. This has also had the sad Market effect of RAISING the price points of ALL of the other Manufacturers! x(
I don't hate all of their products. In fact, the Nitro Stampede and the second run, .25 Nitro T-MAXX were my two favorite Bashers!! It's the Twatwaffles in the Executive Offices, that really burn my butt!!!!!

But....... GAWD - I REALLY want that Body. It's a perfect Scale Replica of my first off-road beater, an 80 Bronco!!!! "thumbsup" It was also the vehicle that I taught myself to drive Stick in (at the cost of a synchro or two!!)
I KNOW that I can't afford it. I know they'll charge a LOT for it. Somehow....... you WILL be mine..... Oh yes, you WILL be mine!!!!

EDIT 4/20/18: NOPE!! Can't happen. :(  Apparently, TRAXX-ASS wants OVER $150.00 for that gorgeous Body - painted ONLY, no sign of the Chromed goodies being available separately any time soon...

Chris, I'm so glad I finally had some time to go through this entire Thread. This looks GOOD my friend!! : "thumbsup" "thumbsup"
You are quite talented!! And like me (so far), with some needed help from very good friends on this Forum, Miracles are happening!!! ;-) I'm so happy for you.

More than that, the REASON you're doing this. Your Father is SMILING down onto you right now! This MAY even be turning out better than You planned, because of all the amazing help you've been getting!
You've also got slightly bigger "stones" than I have...... I'd like to do 1.55's too - but SCALE SIZED TIRES??? Nope! Call me Chicken. I admit it.

Oh! I've been talking to Chris at GCM a lot over the past few years..... and anyone who knows him, knows that he is SUPER Scale! Well, we were talking about a Bronco that he's working on (scratchbuilt Hard Body - of COURSE!!), and I mentioned a few times an item that Ford was very proud of during the 70's, even though it never lived up to its hype....
The "Twin I-Beam front Suspension" - 2 and 4WD. Now at first, he wanted no part of it, due to its complexity. BUT after more discussion..... He's at least going to try some test prints on his 3D Printer!!! : thumbsup"
It
WOULD be tricky, complex, annoying, and likely expensive! But it's also super Scale, a point winner at Comps..... And he'd corner the World Market with it!
NO PROMISES! It's entirely up to him. But what do YOU think?.

I told Cindi (wifey) about this, and she's thinking that she wants us to do HER Father's 1976 Ford F-100, in what she calls "baby diarrhea brown" and silver paint!!! :lmao: Since she wouldn't be all that Serious about the performance...... I could just use my P402 Chassis!!
Win-Win. It was her Dad's favorite.

I would do MY Dad's favorite......... but a SR-71 Blackbird Crawler just would not work!!!! :P (and YES fellow Veterans, my Dad was THAT Cool!!!!) Imagine if you will, going into the Air Force, starting to get a Stripe or two..... And then the guys around you find out that your Father flew THAT!!!! AND, when I Enlisted, Dad was STILL in - as a Full Bird!
It took me quite awhile to stand out, and finally stop being compared to Him...... Mostly.
His favorite terrestrial Car was his '56 Chevy Bel Air...... Not QUITE what you think of, for a Crawler!!! ;-)

Chris, I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes! Like I said, you're very talented. I want to see how you do the Interior. I'm sure I'll get good ideas.
That's what this Forum is BEST for - LOTS of great ideas!!!

aw shucks Mr. Carmine... you moved me to tears at work.

as for Chris at GCM, guy is one of my heroes in the industry. his 76 F series was part of my inspiration to this build. i actually found his build thread on the GCM forums and tried to hunt down where that body came from so i could get one and scratch build a 79 grill. no dice, the company has either moved on or folded.
as for his suspension stuff... i have plans on getting the radius arm kit and literally about to grab their rear leaf kit very VERY soon. that's about as accurate as i can get this ascender, last thing to do after that would be to have Ben (italy83) put the pumpkin offset on the front axle. ("CODYBEN" mod).
then i plan on a 3D printed body i found from korea. interior would go in that. i don't think i can fit interior in the current body. its a little on the small side, and the forward motor protrudes too far into the cab for a dash to cover.
so the 3D printed body would literally be the "topping" on the cake that is phase 2.
oh and the 1.55 wheels and tires just seem right. scale is key here! anything bigger is either not available in the wheels i want, or just too dang big and would rub on the body like crazy.

phase 3 might be a rebuild on a CMAX chassis? (don't hate me for that, ascender fam! i wouldn't go away, just use the current chassis under a new equally awesome build.)

as for the twin I beams... i would consider that if i made a fully scale 2wd version since that's what my dads was. in the meantime, its my only trail truck, so 4wd will remain even though its not true to what he had. (though he always wanted a 4wd F250)

and if your wife wants to build her own F series, i think we have resources to help guide her on her way. that's awesome she is interested in RC! i have seen a 76 version floating around on youtube, looks like the same people that make the 79 I'm after. heck, even a 79 with a well crafted scratch built or 3D printed replacement to 76 grill would work (and yes the round fuel cap too).

Thanks for the kind words. this is one of those builds i don't think will ever really be "done". at least not for a few years. revising suspension and drivetrain for more scale correctness, interior for both cab and camper shell... its a ways out! lol but i will keep at it and it will be a hell of a ride. literally and figuratively!

i look forward to seeing that wraith of yours too!
