Tribute to my Dad's 79 F100 featuring Banzai

so as work on the bench has come to a temporary stand-still due to a small human running my life right now...
i have had some time to think.
that's dangerous.
and now there are SEVERAL new options for potential "shinchu's next rig".

RC4WD's desert runner. awesome. expensive. scale.
axial's builder kit. affordable. nearly unlimited potential.
ascender suburban? the RTR will have body posts. yuck. but then on Halloween i watched ghostbusters with my son. gears turned. lightbulbs flickered.

hmmmmmm...???

t7houh.jpg

obviously weight up top is dumb. but i LOVE the novelty of the idea and i could get driver figures easy.

and yes i know i need to finish this 79 ford first. realized i will need a rear driveshaft for the substantial WB increase. i know junfac and MIP are tuff as nails, but might get something more scale like RC4WD or even BOOM has some scale stuff.
ring and opinions?

yeah plus i forgot about the fully leafed suspension... hmmm... RLWB TF2? CMAX? either of those *MIGHT* be cheaper than the desert runner. *actually no. no it wouldn't. 2 blazer bodies alone plus either chassis... that's over $500 easy.

might just stick to my original plan of 85 yoter. then the question is: links or leafs???

Haven't forgotten about this old gal...

Did some minor work last night to get her trail ready for the in laws waterfall today.
Trimmed axle ends a bit so the scale caps would torque down all the way, trimmed the beads on the RC4WD mud thrashers and glued to the losi cr12 wheels, and some tweaking to the hw1080 esc.
3 batteries charged for Andrew and I.
Ready to go!

What do you thnk about....

Maybe a Hpi body for beating on, and your PLA body for lighter trail action?
well yes that's one idea. you mean that HPI body that comes on the re-re of the crawler king that was just announced?

thing is though, if i did that, i already have a lexan body in the form of the Jconcepts that is on the truck now. and it has put in some pretty good work on some really harsh terrain.

and its not as simple as just "plop on a lexan body" if its already been changed for the 3D printed one.
wheelbase is MUCH different, and part of the reason i haven't made progress yet. with the long bed option, wheelbase should be somewhere in the 340mm range? its in the last couple pages.
so yeah. insert "one does not simply" meme here. :ror:

i will just be gentle with the 3D body. trails and some medium terrain. that's why i started on the tiny tires, so when i put the bigger tires (already on) for the bigger body it will be much easier and i don't bite off more than i can chew.

CARMINE! welcome back brother! good to see you and even though it sounds like you got even more bad news, it seems you are taking it in stride. i wish Cindi and you the best in giving the big C the middle finger.
and im really glad to hear you found some support and distraction.
Merry Christmas to you and your Family.

as for this project here...
well lets just say FUNDING APPROVED. 8)
i got plenty of "fun tickets" for xmas so we are going to see this and maybe some side projects really start moving VERY soon. "thumbsup"

first on the list is some glue to hold the PLA together. then some sort of putty to smooth it out and sand like crazy.
then a driveshaft so i can stretch my ascender to the LIMIT.
i don't think i can pull the trigger on a scale drivetrain or accurate bowhouse axles just yet, but just getting it done and running for proline should be well within reason.
oh and i might get back to Mr Kim about his interior bits.

now excuse me while i browse RPP, ebay, and amazon for some doodads and whatnots i need... "thumbsup"
namely, thinking about this guy here... might be long enough. gonna have to assemble the body and see what wheelbase and then take a measurement from the t-case to the rear pumpkin.
4WD_2849.jpg

or i suppose to be proper scale it would be a two-piece shaft with a support/carrier bearing.
like this guy here https://store.rc4wd.com/Bearing-Car...n-Transfer-Case-Mount-for-TF2-LWB_p_7159.html
hmmm...
yeah im going to need to assemble the body to figure this out.

Ok my wife wanted to go to hobby lobby last night to see what xmas stuff was on sale (66%, just incase you are wondering lol) then i remembered i need CA for my 3D body. headed to the model section and sure enough, BSI glue!
i didn't see anything that jumped out at me other than the accelerator (i remember hearing "kicker" in the GCM vid). so i grabbed that.
now im looking on amazon for the CA and there are a TON of choices.
gap filling? that sounds ideal for body work, no?

Oh man that pic brought back a ton of memories. Late 80's early 90's my Dad was heavy into building and flying RC planes. I've glued so many fingers together with BSI blue. Pro tip CA + skin + accelerator = instant blisters.

I use the BSI. It's great stuff. The only other brand I use is super jet. I have tried other's and these are the best I've tried. I have used super jet since the 80s for my airplanes until I tried the BSI. Works better with plastic especially the tire glue which is what I used to glue the body together. Oh and yes with the insta cure. Waiting for it to dry will leave you with stuck together fingers and hard to remove finger prints on the body.

Thank you sir. I will try to get some from Amazon today.
I could go to the train shop 10 min from my house but its just out of the way enough to be a burden on daily family operations lol

Thanks for the pointers!

bSi CA glue and 3d printed Turk have been in my possession for way too long.
Time to do something about that.

Last night I watched (again) the GCM vid on assembling a 3d printed body. Chris made it seem pretty simple. Dab a "spot weld" when you it all lined up. Then run a bead on the seam where it will wick down to join the parts.
Easy peasy.

Here is what resulted.

It's a cab! Well almost...

Here is what it looks like underneath/inside.
Nothing fancy but it's BEEFY.

Then I got froggy and was like "well I got this spare short bed sitting here lemme see what it looks like."
Its only 2 quick joints at 12 noon on the fender arches. Took like 4 minutes.
Plop the bed topper on minus roof just to get an idea...

I'll be damned it's like I'm 9 years old again and its camping time...

So chassis is currently at about 11.3" and uhhhhh... I still have a longer bed for accuracy to my pops 1:1 so yeah... Gonna need to stretch her out a bit and get a longer rear driveshaft. Possibly even a bearing carrier for a 2 piece style.

Scales excellent with rc4wd chebby!

And yes I cleaned off my bench lol

Well that's a good start. Good to see you working on it again

Yeah its great to get back to it! Just dont tell 2mtech how many times I glued myself to the truck lol

YIKES!!!!
just made a huge discovery/whoopsie...
When Mr Kim sent the longer bed, he only sent the front half of the bed!
*quickly snapped the back half off*
Thank god the glue hadent cured quite yet!
WHEW!
Just barely dodged that major snafu!
That will teach me to goof around before opening ALL boxes!

So, now to assemble the long box... ;)
And I got a bit of primer on the cab. Ehhh LOTS of gap filling and sanding in my future lol

*LONG BOX! everything assembled. Gonna get paint soon and see how long I need to stretch the chassis.

Looks good with the primer. That body has some pretty nice detail to it. Enjoy the next 40hrs of sanding!

Ahahaha!!!!

GIGGITY!

just got back from Michael's where I got 3 cans of testors root beer, and a big ol can of surface primer. Oh and clear model glue for the winders.
I think I have a couple dozen sheets of sandpaper, and my dremel with flex wand for tight spots.
Dont worry, lowwwww RPM.

Heh. Flex wand. GIGGITY!
