Traxxas Velineon 3500 Brushless Motor

Has anyone tried one of these motors in the Wraith? They're waterproof, brushless and the right size as well as going to 3s LIPO. If you have, what ESC are you using? Thanks, I'am new to this rock crawling thing.

I am running that motor with a sidewinder ESC and a 56/13 32 pitch gear combo with pretty good results for playing around. It has pretty bad startup jitters for slow crawling but if you went down a few teeth on the pinion you should be alright. I am running it on a 5000mah 2S and the motor barely gets warm but on a 3S it will get kinda hot. Hope that helps.

@winkscrawler: did you have to modify the Velineon motor to get it on the Wraith. Seems like the transmission pinion would stick too far out to get the transmission gear cover back on w/o cutting it down. Did you use some sort of spacer between the motor and the motor plate?

I don't have a Wraith, yet, but I was thinking about the same motor/esc combo for one. How "Tippy" are these at speed?

Yes a small part of the motor shaft was cut off to fit. This motor is only good for going fast. I didnt like it at all for crawling and I killed several drive shafts but it was fun doing it. I ran it mostly on 2s but it flys on 3s and then breaks parts everytime I took it out. I have moved backed to brushed for now.

Good to know, the idea behind me getting into crawlers was they break less part's lol.

I'm running the VX3-s motor and esc, geared 87/14. I went through 3 20turn brushed motors in the first 5 days, 1 from mud and 2 from heat. Then I borrowed the Velineon setup from a friend. I've had no problems so far, knock on wood... still running the original driveshafts. (Edit... broke my front driveshaft the day after I posted this) I crawl on 2s or 3s training mode, even 2s training mode gives ample power for rocks. 3s @ 100% gives monster truck like performance. Wheelies from a dead stop, stoopid amounts of torque and a top speed similar to the stock motor/gearing on 3s.

Cons: It starts to cog pretty bad if geared higher than 16/87, mine would trip the esc into some fault mode when it was geared higher if it was bound up, or I tried to hold a hill to long. The esc sorta sucks for crawling w/o the drag brake, mines more of a basher than crawler I guess. Also the traxxas brake setup prevents most of the fun that would break the transmission. I seem to get reverse when I'm looking for the brakes and the brakes when I need reverse... but I think a waterproof Holmes esc might be the answer there.

Pros; The good news is this combo is cheap and may be bulletproof, I've submerged, mudbogged, crawled, hillclimbed and beat the **** out of this setup. I bet I have 40+ hours on mine since the beginning of Sept, I use it to play chase with my dog almost nightly instead of a going for a walk, and it will never get hot geared that low.
Here's some of me driving the wraith cautiously

In the vid "Matt's wraith twists the rear driveshaft as soon as we flipped on the camera, he's runnin a Tekin 10.5turn @ 80/18 and twists off driveshafts like it's his job. It does however look cool before it breaks "thumbsup"

i run the vxl motor and esc on 3s on standard gearing, not good for crawling but great with padles. broke the stockfront axleshafts after 5min so my car is waiting for axial to releas the upgrades:cry:

Thanks. I ended up cutting up a spacer out of hardwood to put between the Velineon motor and the aluminum plate and swapped the 6mm cap heads with 10mm and it holds up well. Mounted it on the truck with a new Mamba Max Pro ESC and took it for a spin on the street and noticed that the Wraith was much faster going in reverse than forward. Instead of swapping motor cables around I tried re-calibrating the ESC to the Wraith's stock radio with terrible results... the ESC LEDs light up properly, but REVERSE DOES NOT WORK! It just sits there... I'm not happy as this is a brand new MMP.

Any suggestions? I've tried calibrating and re-calibrating w/o success.

Very "tippy"... I got to test mine yesterday with a MMP/Velineon 3500 brushless motor, 80/24T gearing, and a 2S 35C Lipo... it was all over the place.

I swapped the leads one the motor to fix reverse.

FWIW I never modified anything when I installed my motor, not sure what's different, just saying :???:

I have mine out tonight to fix a stripped center gear in the trans so I took some pics.
