The "Just shut up and build it" thread...

Yep - the Chanquish had an inside rear tire bead go during a long sweeper, puttin' the power down - I was throwing a roost the whole way...

My Gearhead wheels didn't throw a bead, they had hub hardware loosen up - might have been my fault.

I'm about to call around to get longer bolts for them...

Videos are finally up!

Please be gentle, as these are my first ever uploaded videos, I was by myself and driving one-handed.

Videos picked up the crazy sounding motor!

Looks like it handled that bluff well! So much loose on the side of that hill, and it is hard to tell how steep it really is!

I gotta figure out a mount for my FlySky to hold the phone... that would be best, I think.

OK!

I finally got a wheel scenario that should work for me... "thumbsup"

Went to the Austin Bolt Company just a few blocks away (too cool!) and the counter salesperson there charged me a whopping $1.00 for thirty 5/8" long 4/40 cap-head bolts in black oxide.

Thanks, guys! ;-)

Unfortunately, they didn't have anything shorter so I just finished using my ancient Dremel tool to cut 12 of them a bit shorter, or else the ends would have fouled on the steering knuckles!

Used threadlock on all of them, tightened the beadlock bolts a tiny bit and then busted out 4 brand new serrated axle locknuts to hold the wheels on.

None of this shit better loosen up on me!!!

I'm hoping that I can get a whole battery pack (dare I say it, maybe even TWO?) through this thing before I go home again.

Hmmm...

...it's 100 degrees outside right now, with a wimpy 5mph so-called "breeze"...

Maybe I should wait until morning?

I'm gonna chill out in my apartment for a bit and think on it.

That will let the threadlock and the nylon locknut material harden and take a "set".

Maybe I can take my other problem (the kit tire that threw a bead) out of the freezer and see if I can get it to clamp properly - as I was unable to do it last night.

I've cleaned the bead area and the wheel with rubbing alcohol, to get it to hopefully work out.

We shall see!

My hands hurt already, and this isn't gonna help any... damnit.

A couple more decals, got it basically at a stopping point...

Tiny SMC (LiPo batteries), Mamba (ESC), and Gearhead skull (wheels) on the black plastic battery end panels - and the red medieval lions are from the city of Braunschweig in Germany, where much of my mother's side of my family live.

And, of course the big Holmes Hobbies "gear" circles on the hood and rear upper quarter panels...

Looking good "thumbsup"
Thanks for posting up those vids. Other than the videos that John Holmes did with his TRX4 there really are not any good videos of the Revolver motor. I do like the Sci-Fy sound of it especially when it starts to come under load.

I'm still on the fence about tossing a Mamba X and a revolver 1400 in my TRX4. Since you have seen the vids after taking them is the sound pretty true or is it amplified or exaggerated by the mic in the camera.....only reason I asking is that if I do get it for the TRX4 I may also get it for the Bomber later on like you have. I guess what Im concerned about is that it will drive myself and others around me nuts listening to it for 2-3 hours trailing and crawling ?

It's fairly loud if you are close to it and slow-crawling, but it smooths out to where it really doesn't even really sound different when it's going quickly.

The "Preview" video shot in landscape mode was to somewhat show the noise when it's "in your face"...

I should be posting many more videos soon, hopefully they will give a better impression.

I will say that it is incredible how the tone deepens when you have it REALLY jammed up under load - the feedback is very helpful in letting you know when to pay more attention to picking your line.

Obviously, at that location where the videos I took so far - that did not happen.

Earlier, on it's maiden run - where all thoughts of video were forgotten - we were in the big rocks and getting wheels completely jammed in gaps, and that's when it was much more apparent!

Thanks for sharing the videos "thumbsup", make sure to hold the phone sideways to get the right aspect ratio like you did in the first one.

That sound sure is wild. I heard a rig with a Revolver at the Proline By the Fire event and it was pretty loud or maybe just stood out a lot, people around it were saying stuff like "That wont get old or drive you nuts" sarcastically. I have to say after hearing it I'm not sure I could take it but I've been intrigued by the Revolver.

EDIT: The 1800KV Revolver in the larger size (not snubnose) seems to have disappeared, RPP hasn't stocked it in some time and the Holmes site no longer offers a 1800KV option just the 1400KV. That might end up being a special little motor!

I just posted in the other thread - regarding availability...

When I'm driving one-handed, it's very hard to shoot in landscape mode, the Pixel XL is a bit large. I managed to shoot the shortest video in that format.

I'm planning on more vids when I have someone else with me, but he and I live a ways apart so it may not happen for a week or so.

Awesome, Thanks.

Ya ever since I seen Holmes running that motor I have been very intrigued by it.

Yeah even with a good grip its tough to be smooth. I've seen a few people with phone mounts that attach to the TX, not sure who made them. Or get some little tripods to use maybe.

Like the videos! "thumbsup"

I also think that the tripod is the most viable option... well, unless you have somebody to make the movies...

I was actually thinking about ways to mount your phone to your control after watching the videos... I would think using a commercially available product with slight mods may be the way to go. I might look into this a bit more as it seems like it would be easy enough.

I browsed Shapeways looking for "transmitter phone mount", nada...

Then I remembered an Axial blog post about a phone thing - there's an article about taking plastic parts trees and making a bracket for a phone - but it only protects the phone, doesn't make a mount:

tech_phonepod.jpg

There's a radio mfg that makes a transmitter that has a phone mount, if I remember correctly - but I ain't gonna switch radios just to make this work - and it doesn't place the phone at a good angle for recording, it's for using an app:

Closest thing I've found on Amazon:

Whatever, I'll figure something out later...

I have finally had a good night sleep!

9 hours and 15 minutes, woke up to an alarm at 9AM.

Gonna get out there and run this thing shortly... "thumbsup"

Durok, That is very similar to what I was envisioning. Only for filming it would be hand to have it pointing the camera out of the back. Also it would probably be easy enough to modify a phone holder for a car dash to do this. It looks like that is basically what Spectrum did.

glad you got some sleep and are up and about early. It is not too bad outside right now. Hope you run goes well today, maybe this will be the time you get to drain a battery. You may want to take a spare set of wheels and tires with you! :)

Thanks, Miatardo!

Fleabay has this for Traxxas:

You can always get a gopro-type socket base with a phone clamp mount and glue it to the radio.

I can't belive no one has made something like this yet on shapeways...

Well, I am juiced up on Monster Energy Import - and am topping off my rechargeable FlySky GT3C LiPo, and my two 3600mAh SMC 4S packs... ;-)

...just about to head out and get a good hard run in on the #777 Revolver!

It's "only" 90-some degrees, with an expected high today of (gulp!) 103!

If I don't come back, at least you guys know I died with a smile on my face... "thumbsup"

(j/k, bringing lots of cold water)

I'll try some more one-handed video, maybe I can do better - I have this Shapeways transmitter wheel adapter (Thumb Steer 2.0 by THC aka "The Hoyfab Crawlers" - with design input from our own mikebecher!) that helps a little with that:

Polaroid cube and a cheap magnet glued to the upside of where you TX batteries go in is the easiest method I've found of mounting a camera. The magnet on the cube is strong and I've not had a slip yet which is encouraging [emoji106]
Good luck out in the heat.
