Shock oil weight

What a good all around shock oil weight for crawling and messing around 20 or 30wt or something else

I run 100wt in my SCX10 and 70wt in my Trx. I have experimented with 10, 30, 50, 70 and 100. I prefer the heavier wt. The heavier wt oil will make the shock rebound a lot slower. The thought behind it is that when you drive over a gap or hole it helps to keep the shock from rebounding fast and causing the weight to drag you down or flip you. Allot of times when you go over a gap or hole with one tire with having the heavier wt oil the tire will not even go all the way down. Pretty much making that tire float the gap. Hope that helps! It really depends on how your rig is set up and what kind of movement you are wanting out of your rig. Many of the LCG belly-draggers run light oil. For top heavy rigs, you'll likely want to run heavier oil (100wt). I run 40-50wt, to me it gives a good balance between controlling chassis roll, maintaining the ability to carry tires over cracks and having the suspension react fast enough so that it conforms to rocks in a predictable manner.


What's 2K oil?

That is oil that is in between 1k and 3k... "thumbsup"
 
Man, I'm really curious as to what "2K oil" is now. I mean, if he means 2,000wt, that's insane. If it's 2000cst, that's still something like 160-170wt... which is still insane, provided the shocks have pistons in them.
Those are the lightest weight springs Traxxas offers (around 1.25lbs/in), and oil weight has a relationship with spring rate.
 
2000cst oil

For those of us that 1000cst/80wt shock oil doesn't cut it.

2000cst is actually what I run in my rc4wd bilstiens on my IFS Knightrunner. The bilstiens have 3 port pistons, with springs tuned to support the truck, front is bouncy as hell on anything less.

That said, rc uses 2 different viscosity standards which is dumb. Either use wt or cst. But that said, never found anything higher 80wt listing, anything thicker have to switch to cst, then you see how high the viscosity options really go.

Springs control the load, damper (in case of rc the piston and oil) control the spring.

Good to know 2K oil really means something. Never heard of it.
 
I typically prefer 40-60wt. I recently went back and tried a 32.5wt which is pretty standard in rtr's I believe. It was too bouncy for my liking
 
I've taken a liking to set-ups with heavy springs/oil (I think Losi 70wt is the highest I've gone) in the front. I'm looking for a more scale driving experience first over a balanced performance.

My hard body TK has Losi 70wt and the TK stock springs and Losi 40wt with 10.2 kit rear springs (iirc) The Axial springs are slightly softer than the TK springs and the heavier front oil makes the rear articulate first as though it's a 1:1 setup to avoid damaging the oil pan/engine.

An unintentional, but very pleasant, side effect of my setup is the springs manage to hold the chassis with added inner fenders, steel bumpers and sliders, the Injora XJ body and a Traxxas 5000mah 3s battery at the ride height I wanted while still allowing enough chassis roll that it looks like a 1:1 on old leaf springs, backyard modified for off-roading.

With the cantilever setup I'm working on. I will surely be using something around 3000cst oil in my shocks. 100wt/1325cst doesn't slow them down at all.

I hate to hijack a thread but it's still on topic.

I've got cantilevers on the way. I should pick up some of this 2-3k cst y'all speak of? I like my rigs with slow damper rates as well. This rear setup will be going in a stock TK with lexan body.

Mine is a total diy cantilever set using Revo rockers. Yours may be different. 100wt/1325cst didn't slow mine down at all. Might have to re think mine if the 3000cst doesn't do the trick.
