SCX 10.2 GMC Build turned FJ80

Howdy! Trying to get my post count up so I can browse the damn classifieds and get this build off the ground a bit faster. Figured I'd document my progress here.

The Goal: Replicate my '72 GMC Sierra and satisfy some of my overlanding urges without cutting up my actual truck.

The Starting Point: A Trail Honcho RTR SCX10.2.

Body:

The 67 Axial C10 body is on the way. Going to print up the Knight Customs drop in bed and interior and paint them to match (half of this is a scale modeling adventure for me, the RC crawling is just a bonus). I'll grab his engine bay / fender shrouds as well. On the fence about the engine bay / functional hood though.

Running Gear:

Not sure yet which metal links I'll go for, open to recommendations. Obviously want to stay at 12.3". Seems like metal axles or knuckles at the least are a necessity. Going for the Boom Racing 1.55 Yota LC's for that classic look. Open to 1.55 tire recommendations as well. In running the truck around the neighborhood, it seems like sliders will be necessary too.

Extras:

Really want to run a bed rack with a soft top / bimini top with a few scale goodies (kinda like the blazer below). If anyone knows of a good off the shelf bed rack I'm all ears. Probably going to leave the C10 bumpers alone if I can, and then drive the wheels off the thing!

Suggest away! See you guys on the trails.

Sorry, had to get the Imgur links working! The later shots are just the intended goal, we'll see how close I get.

Pictures of the inspiration vehicle should be working now.

Someone point me in the direction of a bedrack and some 1.55 tires!

Got to enjoy the truck a bit as a regular honcho!

Time to tear it apart! Take it easy, this is my first semi-scale build.

Still to come:

I need the factory blazer decals for the lower trim and blinkers. Going to print something for the hood lettering and upper spear trim. Need to print a riser for the rear bumper as well, the bed makes the body sit high in the rear. The factory bumpers don't do that well on the trail, so I'll try and get something sorted for those as well.

For a first build I think you over did it bud..... How you live up to this on a second build is beyond me. Lol

No really, all the added weight is not my cup of tea but that is one of the beat look scale trucks I've seen in a long while!
Keep it up!

Got the hood and upper side trim sorted out and got the truck out a bit this weekend. Bumper cleaned up and tucked too. Still want to use the lower decal package and blinker decals from the blazer body to finish it up. Still on the fence about the blazer bumpers too. Working on some scale stuff for the bed.

Any tips on bungees, gas can mounts, etc?

Beautiful build, great job!

What kind of printer are you using, I’m totally new to the 3D printing scene.

This looks awesome! I think RC4WD's Rally wheels would have been more fitting to the original photo, but those are constantly out of stock so it's a gamble if you can actually buy them.

Any tips on bungees?

I’ve made some myself in the past. I used a paper clip unfolded and find a screwdriver with a round shaft about 1/16 to 1/8” diameter or so. I use pliers or vice grips to lock the end of the paper clip perpendicular to the screwdriver shaft. Then wrap the paper clip around the screwdriver a few times and bend it into a hook. Keep the wraps tight together.

At Walmart (or other) get some ladies hair ties (ouchless or without the metal clamp work best). Cut them apart where they’re joined. Slip one end through the hook you made and tie a knot. They’re perhaps a little big for 1/10 but I think they look very decent.

Wicked nice scale build my man!

This is such a cool build. I have the Axial Blazer and i am going to try and do the GMC conversion to make mine a JIMMY. Did you 3d print the GMC letters on the hood?

Amazing quality on both your 1:1 rig and the little one! I've always loved this style of GMC but you don't really see many of them.
