Is the R1 a good crawler? I just got one and I have not even used it yet.. But the guy that sold it to me was frustrated with it and had no patience to tweak the suspension.

I know they sale for pretty good money, If its a waste of Time I can sale it too! Thought id ask first

What kind of crawling? Scale crawling it can eat up if you spend the time tweaking it. It will never do the sportsman/pro lines that the MOA guys pull though.

I got the R1 for the scale looks of the chassis. The portal axles were a plus. I think the best thing you can do to make it more scale would be to put 1.9s on it with a slightly extended wheelbase.

In terms or crawler capabilities, changing the shock setup and wheelbase improved it's performance the most. Tire selection makes a difference too.

Yeh definitely pump out the wheelbase a bit. Mine is the same as my SCX10 now, I ended up using a full set of bent Wraith upper links as my lowers.

So what about the stock shocks?

I never had a chance to give them a good go before they started leaking. I skipped right to the gmade piggyback shocks and mounted them more laid down to get more leverage from them making a more plush suspension. With most of my weight in the axles, I needed the softest suspension possible.

Look up my 356 build and you'll see how I mounted them.

just fixed mine. I did shock tower stiffener delrin skid to inboard the lower links and it crawls awesome. even with the droop shocks. I have a built AX10 that's damn good too. pretty sure the AX is gonna be on the self for awhile. I did the novak timbuk2 with ballistic brushless 18.5. spectrum 6030 servo couldn't ask for better performance. I have afew parts still in the mail like bent links metal DS's and thinking about after market knuckles to gain some more steering.

My R1 is just fine and I run it all over. It took a while to get it set up to the way I drive and learn to drive it. This is my build hope it helps.

I got an R1 for Christmas, built it in stock form off the bat, except for the tires, which I knew were crappy. In stock form it's really top heavy but I see a lot of potential with it.

I'm running a Holmes BRXL and Torquemaster 13.5T system. 400ish oz hitech servos for steering.

I'm waiting on a few parts to come in, but so far I've moved the battery to the front axel, bent upper links, derlin skid, and upgraded the servo mount. So far with just these simple mods it crawls well in my back yard testing. Much better than my wraith which is heavily modded.

You'll want to upgrade the driveshafts right away as they are WEAK. My oldest son broke one right away. I've got the rear steer kit on the shelf (just gotta back my GT3C) and VP Comps w/weights on the way from eggbert.

I see a ton of potential with this buggy. It looks cool, and I think it'll be a fun little crawler once it's dialed in. Is it gonna hang with a full on comp crawler? No, but it's not gonna run ya $1,000 to build it either.

Hop it up, dial it in and have a blast.

Wow!! I'm impressed!! those are near vertical climbs.

Are you running any weights in your tires?
Nope. No weights. Just an extended wheelbase and a droop suspension with battery on front axle. I'm having some knuckle weights machined, though. Can't wait to try them out.
