New to Rc trucks and the CC01

Should I replace the factory motor? If so what's the best for crawling? 35T, 45T 55T? I'm running 106mm diameter tyres.
 
Are you going to be running a GRU or programmable ESC at all? If GRU, probably a 45t with a 2:1 or a 35t with a 4:1. If proper ESC, like a Holmes BR-XL, get a sweet 27t as you can program the throttle curves, punch and endpoints to limit the speed where you need it, but you'll be able to do some fast running if you go full throttle. I run a 45t with a 2:1 GRU and would like it be a little faster. It's definitely fast walk speed, but I kind of want to see some rooster tails of dirt and a hit a jump every now and then. Also for comparison, I run the same size tyres and only a very weak motor is going to be hampered by pushing fat rubber.
 
Gear Reduction Unit, something you can buy from RC4WD to lower your wheel speed while increasing wheel torque. Available in several flavours of reduction. Electronic Speed Controller, the thing that puts power into the motor and receiver. The stock Tamiya one is the TEU104BK which is actually very satisfactory when paired with a GRU which will act like a mechanical drag brake so it wont just roll down hills or fall backwards off one when you get off the throttle. I've boiled it down before to two options.

Cheap: RC4WD GRU and a RC4WD 35t-55t motor for about $65.
Not: Holmes BR-XL ESC and a Holmes or Tekin 35t for about $145.
 
For your drop shackle might I suggest making it more controlled than just a flopping around. The idea of the drop shackle is great but it can create some undesirable effects if it's not sprung dampened or limited.

Totally. Stock motor is 27t I believe, so I would recommend a 4:1 unit which will bring the turns at the pinion to 108t. Maybe go a 3:1 if you want a little more wheel speed.
 
Use the 3x spider gears that would normally go into the rear diff. With 6x spider gears in there it's locked up tight.

If you can't find the extra gears, hot glue works awesome, you just have to make sure you get it packed in good... plus is you decide not to lock it any more, you can take all the glue out at a later date.
 
My build has been going great, looks sweet but I'm still not happy with the steering. Still too sloppy and not sharp enough. Have noticed a few of you guys relocating the servo to the front. Does this make the steering a lot better? Any tips or pictures on this mod?
 
Moving steering to the front makes it a lot more precise, stronger and much less prone to locking up, but I've found that it actually decreases the amount of turn you get.
