LNC Project: "Crawling Dragon".

I took a risk on buying this i guess. But it's a rig i loved the moment i first saw it, so this was my chance.
Overhere (in the Netherlands) there are no real comps, so i will be running it recreational. But will make my own comp and try to find equal minded guys :).

After the links were installed, i turned to the servo. The CYS 2220. I have heard some good stories on it in the meanwhile, so my expectations are high.
CYS claims it to be waterproof. However i do believe in waterproof after i made it such. So i took it apart. Used Conformal coating on the circuitboard, put marinegrease on the gears and near the output shaft. Used plastidip inbetween the different bodysections. I often plastidip the whole body. But since this also a beautifull servo to see, it would be a sin making it all black with plastidip.

As i want to use the full potential of this servo which can handle 7.4V, i want to use a Bec. I have the CC-pro around. I had to use the CC usb link to set it at the required voltage. A guy i know has that cable, but due to a disagreement (some jealousy on his side, there will always be haters) and i did not want to buy it myself at this moment, i had to look for an alternative. As by coincident, i read the HeyOk post on his No-brainer Bec. Shippingcosts to the Netherlands were way much lower then expected and i gave him the order. Damn, that guy works fast! Shipped on friday, got it on tuesday "thumbsup".

A friend did return a favor to me. I helped him with waterproofing his SCX10. He got himself a 3D printer and made me some jackstands. Enough for all my rigs to be supported front and rearaxle. I gave 'm a baseplate and named them. Just because they all have different widths.

Then i came to the conclusion that i had ordered the wrong ESc. I ordered the non-sensored one. My bad. So i am waiting for the correct one :(.

There wasn't much i could do. So i started working on the Grappler Body. Masking, spraying and fiddling for hours with little tiny decals. I will not show it completely yet. But i think it has turned out pretty nice. Still a LNC, but different.
Still waiting for the Esc i started doing some small detailwork. I never ever put stickers on my cars from brands who did not pay for my cars as i did so myself. However, as Asiatees is my sponsor and i am using many Boomracing parts, they deserve their credits.

I like doing detailwork. We (my cup of coffee and i) looked at the body for at least half an hour. Something was missing. It seemed out of balance. Then suddenly i knew it. A small blue line in the same (Asiatees)blue as i used on other parts of the body did bring salvation :ror:
However i did not have such a striping, so i had to make it myself. Using some painterstape did the trick. It also gives it kind of tectyled look.

Yesterday was a glorious day! A'tees said couple of weeks back that i might get the new Boomracing Type-G shocks (itemnumber: BRSG0110). But it was not all that sure yet. However, last week they said they had shipped them and indeed!

These shocks really are a work of beauty! If shocks could be sexy, these definitely would be!
They come with the medium springs pre-installed and have to be filled with oil of ones choice. I chose 30W.
Preparing them is a piece of cake! A walk in the park.... My coffeemachine needs more actions to get a decent cup of coffee then preparing these shocks is.

Since these Type-G's are 110 mm and the stock shocks are 100mm, i had expected some issues. But no, they are smooth enough to be installed without "lifting" the chassis. So the centre of gravity did not raise.
I only had to flip the oilreservoir upsidedown, the hose got jammed underneath the bodyshell.

I was adviced to use shock tower arm spacers. But, it figures... Those are hard to get in Europe. O well, i will try it like it is. Maybe later.

Only "downside" i found with these shocks were the absence of a "movable eye" as most other shocks have. I do remember that when A'tees presented the shocks here on RCC and asked for comments, thoughts. That remark also had been made.

However, i had contact with A'tees and future shocks (let's call 'm type-G2.0 8) ) may have such an eye.

Off-Topic: i am working hard overhere in the Netherlands to promote scaling and crawling. For that i am at a model builders fair early november. A'tees has been so kind to respond positive at my request for some promotional items and they did send me their well known tent.
Might be a nice one to end this post right now and show you another glimp of the LNC which is still peacefully waiting for that damned Esc to come in.

No, the tent normally looks slightly different. The tentpoles are steel and i shoved some black heatshrink over the poles. The baseplate i made myself from plexiglass, some layers of flat black and 2 layers of metallic black.

Waste of time imo..... Why waste the time to duplicating the original parts.... Your video showed no improvement over the stock platform!

Thanks Phishead. I appreciate a honost comment! However, you're a bit late....
From the first video (the announcement) and during the buildseries, here from the topicstart during all other posts i never claimed to build a better or impoved version of the LNC. I even showed all the materials i was about to use. If you came with ideas, maybe constructive remarks then, i would have been functional ;-).
Now it gives the impression you haven't read/seen the previous posts/video's or just waited till the end.
However, some improvements have been made. As smal as they are... The HD gears, grease nipple, brushless system, Bec, stronger servo, etc.

This is your build and your accomplishing your goals as to what you want to do with the LC. Keep on building"thumbsup"

I never wanted to re-invent the wheel. I just wanted to add some bling, muscle and my personal touch to it. Like using my trademark (the Angelwings) but then combined with the Dragon.
It also had to remain recognizable as a LNC. But mainly i like to build rigs that i drew with crayon as a child. So i am trying to live my childish fantasies here :mrgreen:.
The first time i ever saw a Rubicon i was in "Shock and Awe". Totally overwhelmed.... I made dozens of drawings of it. Now, as an adult i built my beasty Rubi Red like i "designed" it way back then (in better times when there was more hair on my head and such 8) )

Is it considered to be "finished" as is, or will there be further changes to improve the performance?

* Knuckle weights usually add improvement to the performance.
* The Sedonas are fairly large diameter, do you miss out on steering angle, or is there enough off-set with the new rims?

Consider it work in progress. Any improvements will be made during the upcoming period. As we speak, i just installed the 17,5T brushless Hobbywing motor. Which is already a small improvement over the 21,5T.
I am thinking of putting the stock wormgears back in the rear axle to get a little higher speed from the frontaxle. But that is not yet sure. I just may not need that modification.

I noticed that the front still may need some extra weight. Even if there is 3.1 Oz of lead on each wheel. Knuckle weights stay on the wishist. However... As always shipping costs to Europe are a bitch!

The Boomracing Cyclone wheels have a 0-offset. So i had to use the Boomracing 14mm (9/16") wheelwideners. Now, at full turn, the tires barely do not hit the shocks. On flexing however, they do hit the bodyshell. So i will order the 20mm (13/16") Boomracing wheelwideners.

For style i kept the battery in the battery compartment. For future use i may make a batteryplate on the axle.

Last weekend i the weather was so beautifull i could not resist of going out to play and i did some intense rockcrawling in a Quarry here. As this is my first typical crawler i am very pleased with the way she handles and performs. She may however not be compared to a more compcrawler (would love to see those at work btw.... Will find some guys here who do drive them and watch them)

There were days that 7 ounces in each front wheel and 3.5 in each rear was pretty normal.

That's one of the single best improvements you can do!
A crawler really benefits from front overdrive:
* When you turn. (... which you do just about constantly.)
* When you have the front wheels climb a near vertical obstacle.
* When seeking grip on a fairly flat surface. (The different speeds will add a bit of tension in the tires and suspension causing the rig to "grip" the surface.)

First we have weight distribution and centre of gravity (COG):
  • With the rig horizontal some 60-65% of the total weight should be on the front wheels. (Easily obtained by adding weight at the front and removing it from the rear.)
  • We want the COG to be as low above the ground as possible while not adding other problems.
    • Lower ride height, to some extent.
    • Smaller diameter tires. (The Sedonas are about as big as you get.)
    • Reduce the weight in "high" positions, such as the battery (and tray) of the LNC. The Grappler body is also relatively heavy.
    • Add weight at the wheels.
Rotating mass in the wheels is not as efficient as heavy axles and knuckles, but as you point out it's cheap.
Being an European I know the cost of overseas shipping. (Shipping within or out from NL seems very cheap, so you might find it more costly than me.)

Still I bought a set of Dlux knuckle weights a few years back, and then made add-on weights to them myself. If I were to do the purchase now I'd opt for the "heavy knuckles" instead. I run 195g brass on each front knuckle and about 30g cheap zinc weights at each rear wheel.

Running Rover tires (a little smaller than Sedonas) on SLW rims with maximum offset hubs I also have that problem when combined with the Grappler body.
Adding offset isn't the solution, but trimming the body hood should help.
I use a different (Exciter) body when I need the performance, and keep my Grappler mostly intact.

Without changing the gearing you'll get more than 50% increase in maximum wheel speed, and 50% more torque.
If your ESC can handle 3S, use it! (I run on 4S...)

Can you show me, or is there a link to your battery tray on the links? No idea how i should imagine that.

I also do not see how the battery tray can be lowered.... But i check this forum on it.

3S remains a serious option. Hobbyking may have some that are interesting. The Esc can handle up to 3S.
