Wanted to see if any of you ever build your own speaker systems.
I am setting up a home theater system for our home and have started collecting components for the 7.1 surrond speakers.
I will be building a dual 15" sub woofer cabinet that will be rated to run at 3,000 watts at 8 ohms continuous, I have already got a pair of Lanzar MAXP154D subs with dual voice coils and 200 oz. magnet motor structure each. I will be building a ported cabinet with a 3"X 13" port 14" long per driver.
My front speakers will have 400 watt 10" mid bass drivers with 4.5" mids and 1" Titanium tweeter drivers.
I have'nt decided on the rear surronds or center channel speakers yet, but think the center channel will have two 4" 200 watt full range drivers.
Over the last year I have been picking up nice wood cabinets that have the same color veneer to create the speaker set.
I can't get over how expensive magnet wire is to make inductors (chokes) for crossovers .
Anyhow, anyone else do this kind of hobby?

Sounds very impressive! Got any pictures of the build so far?

Right now I'm just running an onkyo 5.1 refurbished that I picked up for a stupid cheep price two years ago, and I have my receivers (one for living room and one for the bathroom, and eventually a b zone for outside) my charter DVR, ps3, internet modem, phone modem, and router in my AV room with just the TV wall mounted in the living room with an ir eye to control everything. I also ended up mounting my wii behind the TV, and the sensor bar is invisible behind the clear panel between my bravia and the built in speakers.

Its nothing super special or high end, but I had fun putting it all together and I love only having the TV in the living room and all of the components out of sight.

All I really would like to do is maybe jump to a 5.2 system, and get a nice universal remote so that I'm not the only person who can make everything work, haha

Sounds like your well on your way "thumbsup". I'm still in the gathering parts part. Besides the wood speaker cabinets I've picked up and a pair of subs, mid bass and tweeters along with a Sony 975 watt 7.1 reciver for starters.
I have just the AV reciever, TV, DVD and a pair of 15" 3 way monitors hooked up right now
Am looking at a DBX 1,000 watt mono amp for the sub too.
I like your idea of having the equipment out of the living area 8).
My universal remote operates eveything I have now and will work whatever else I'll add.

I haven't built any speakers but I have done a couple subs. Last one was a Dayton 15" with 500W amp:

I had a table with 4 10" rockford subs and a crown 1000 watt amp to drive it. It was cool, but all said and done I have a single 12" Sunfire sub in a 14" box that sounds better and I think equals the output. I think the hot ticket in the diy subs is to use sonotube with 4 8" or 10" subs. If you place one in each corner it would sound better and give you more even output. Check out the AVS forums. The had some guy who built a custom sub system built out of 2 40" plates and industrial servo motors to move them. I think he had 140db at 22 hertz or something totally ridiculous like that.

I'm happy with my 8" in wall MB Quart Speakers and 8" MB Quart in ceiling spearkers and my 10" MB Quart Sub. All running off of A Harman Kardon Amp.

I watch a lot of TV and movies. Since I do Home Theater rooms for a living.

Do you design custom home speakers? I can pay good amount for quality work

That is a lot of bottom end for a home . Do you think you have planed for enough for the mid bass through highs to keep up with it ? Or does that port tune it below 80 htz. ? I did build some bottom end for mine along time ago used two 15" 8ohm. car subs as well . I had to get them to crossover at something very low to keep them from blowing out the rest of the sound all the time. Today the only nice piece I have is a velodine 12" the rest is a sonny off the shelf all in one box system.
I think I used image dynamics drivers when I built mine , I had two spares for my db truck . I am out of the loop , but mtx did have some ok home stuff for in wall , it sound seemed a little harsh but was good for a loud home . what will that port be tuned at ?

We have a 7.1 system that works well, but I want to replace some of the speakers.

Klipsch 400W 10" woofer, Klipsch F30 towers, and a Bose VCS-10 center. Our surrounds are from an old JVC system. They suck, but they make sound.

We've also got two Aura tactile transducers in each of the couches. Powered by a 300W BASH plate amp. These things really add to the movies, and they're great for when we don't want to wake the kids/neighbors while watching a movie.

I've been debating components and enclosures to replace the center and surround speakers but haven't committed to anything yet. Not too much of a concern right now.
