Im looking to buy a rifle for under $200. I'm only 18 so I can't legally own a handgun yet but I can own rifles. Doing some research I found the Russian made Mosin Nagant. You can find this rifle for $100-$700 depending on the condition and if anything has been done to it by previous owners. I had initially decided I would go ahead and buy the mosin Nagant because I had found one for $109 with free shipping. Until my buddy sent me a message and told me that there are alot more possibilities for under $200 other than the Nagant. However just looking through google I couldn't find anything under $200 that was worth buying. Most were poorly treated and in terrible condition. Since I know how many gun enthusiast are on rcc I figured someone could help me out finding a nice quality rifle for under $200. Thanks in advance

Welcome to Hi-Point Firearms!

Great weapons"thumbsup"

Several of their handguns are under $200
Their carbines were under $200 until very recently, but are still close.

I have a Glock9 and the HiPoint9 and I would take my HiPoint hands down all day long over the Glock

Also have their 40 S&W carbine... Awesome weapon, never a jam, misfire or any issues.

Best part of all.... They are 100% AMERICAN MADE"thumbsup"

Have never needed it, but they have a no hassle lifetime warranty.

I'm getting a 1975 Colt Combat Commander 1911 this weekend for only a few dollars more than $200.

Just gotta know people who need money sometimes.

How long have you used the Hipoints? When they came on the market about 12-13 yrs ago, They were junk, poor materials, wouldnt feed, faulty magazines, the works. I think we sent back every one we sold in the first year. We finally gave up on them. They were very good about their warranty, but it was ridiculous how many problems every one had.

I own a mosin and love it. It is one of my favorites.
Paid $100 and had to buy a $60 synthetic stock cause I cracked the stock wooden one.
I shot open sights and can hit bullseyes from 200 yards.
They do have a hell of a kick though, and after a box of ammo you really feel it.
But well worth the price. And u can get ammo dirt cheap, I paid $150 for 880 rounds.

Can't beat a 10/22 for 200ish.

Fun to shoot, and easy on the wallet in the process.

No doubt one of the best values out there.

You can sometimes get good deals at local gun shows. Not from the dealers though but the pen hookers. A lot of these guys just want to sell what they have and go so you can haggle with them.

First things first, don't buy anything made by Hi-Point.

You should be able to pick up a used 10-22 with a scope under $150. From there you can upgrade components when you get cash.

Care to elaborate?

I'm genuinely curious, because I'm not a gun owner but would like to be in the near future. I hadn't heard of Hi-Point before this thread, and in the light research I've done, the overall consensus is that they are a good buy for the "first-time, non-competition, only want a gun for range shooting and home protection" gun owner.

Made that mistake once. The metal the barrel was made would swell after a couple rounds then jam. After it cooled it was good for another couple rounds.

Their customer service was good though. They knew about the issue, replaced the barrel and give me an extra mag. I put a mag through it when i got it back and then stuck it somewhere. Didn't feel right about selling it to someone else.

Sure, here's 21 pages:

Are Hi point guns $hit?

Hi-point is and ok gun I have had a few of them the only one i ever had jam was the 9mm BUT that was after about a 1000+ rounds and not cleaning it. For the money I would buy another and not think twice. The only reason I dont still have any of them is cause I never keep anything lol.

What kind of experience (if any) do you have with firearms at this point?

A used 10/22 would be an ideal rifle to get you started.. Cheap and stupid easy to work on and change out parts as you get more into it.

The Mosin Nagant is likely THE biggest bang for your buck out of ANYTHING on this planet. I have both an M44 carbine and the 91/30 rifle and they are a hoot to mess around with. They are crude, kick like a mule, and can be fairly accurate. Ammo used to be cheap but it's slowly creeped up over the last several years... When I got into them I could get 1000rds for under $90. Pretty much all the surplus ammo out there is corrosive which requires a special cleaning regiment. You must flush out the bore and the bolt head with a water based cleaner or just plain hot water to neutralize the corrosive salts left behind or it will cause nasty rust and permanent damage.

A lot of old bolt action .22LR rifles can be had as well and are never a bad idea if you're more into slow paced plinking or a little target shooting.

And you can probably find an equal number of pages saying how great they are.

Yes, they were total crap when first introduced. I had one of their first run 9's. I sent it back twice and got a brand new gun the second time. And I had bought that weapon USED, and they knew I did... And they still sent a new one.

I have more recently in the past 4 years bought another 9 and the carbine and have not shot the carbine much more then a few hundred rounds and it has absolutely no issues that I can find to complain about.
The new 9.... I can't even count how many rounds have been through that thing without so much as a hiccup.

Am I a lucky few? Maybe, but instead I think they listened to the customers, fixed their issues all the time having a killer customer service and now have decent weapons for very short money.

No, i do not hold my Hi-points above my S&W, H&R, Remington, Winchester or any others I have.... But I personally am very happy with them and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
